Anyone know if Lionsgate's UK releases are region free? I want to pre-order Hamburger Hill but need to know first.

Thanks,
Tom

Has the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake been released anywhere in the world without the digital blood obscuring the naked zombie like it is in the US release? Thanks.

I'd love to get it before it gets mangled by Discovery.

Thanks,

I got my copy today and it's region free but the menus and episodes are 1080i50. In other words, it should work on region A standalones but anyone outside PAL territories who relies on a PS3 for BD playback is out of luck.

Thanks NekoFever for the information. Luckily I have a Laptop Blu-Ray drive as long as the PS3, so hopefully that will play it properly.

Thanks for the post, I was afraid of something like that.

Now if I can just figure out if my equipment will play the discs, I'd order it. I have a Panasonic bd80 and a Samsung 1500. I believe the 1500 works, but I'm not sure if the tvs will take it. I have a 2 year old Hitachi tv, a 1 year old Panasonic and a newer Vizio, all will take 1080p. Plus they're going through an hdmi switching amp if that matters..

Has anyone imported "Himalaya" from France? It's one of the most gorgeously photographed movies I've ever seen... just wondering how the transfer looks.

Can anybody comment on the picture quality of the Polish release compared to the UK and Japan
post #1032 of 1372
Quick couple of questions.

My wife decided to buy me a couple of blu rays I was looking for as Christmas presents. Just want to make sure that these are the best versions and that they will work on a US PS3.

Equilibrium- is the Japanese version still the best? Heard there was a Polish one out there but haven't learned anything else about it.

Brotherhood of the Wolf- I know that this was finally released on BD, seems to be some conflicting info on whether it will work on a US PS3 or not. If it doesn't, by chance does anyone know any good sites to pick the HD version up at? (I generally use yesasia for the Japanese releases, and used to use Xploited for my HD imports, but Xploited doesn't seem to carry it anymore)

Hero- I've really wanted this movie forever, but I'm a bit ticked at the language fiasco. Is there by chance some import version of it that everything works correctly on?

Thanks all for any information you have. Not often I get the chance to pick out my own Christmas presents and want to make sure I'm going for the right ones.

The Spanish Blu-ray has the movie's Mandarin language in standard DTS 5.1. Still not lossless, but perhaps somewhat better. More importantly, it has the superior English subtitle translation.

Can't speak to the video quality yet. I ordered a copy from dvdgo.com, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Memories of Murder -- one of the best of the decade -- due out on the 16th:

YesAsia
Dan, does Memories of a Murder have English subs?
Thanks!
DB
YesAsia and all other sources (here's a Korean one) list English subs. Korean DVDs, at least for feature films, almost always have them -- I know of some that don't, but those are like 95% pre-'90s films. This doesn't appear to have changed with BD (Lust, Caution had English subs, and that's not even a Korean film).

On the other hand, it's a safe bet the extras won't have subs.

Has anyone ordered Les Enfants De Dune

http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B001...pf_rd_i=405320

It's a Sony Release so I imagine that it's Region Free, but I'm wondering about English Audio, Codecs used, and opinions on the disc (not on the movie please)

Dan, thanks, I appreciate your reply (I have a dup account, I accidentally signed in with (sarienanj).

All the best! DB

Being the impatient idiot I am, I impoted Hamburgar hill from the UK hoping for the best. I tried to play it today in my player but it is Region B locked. If anyone with a region free player is interested, I put it up for sale on Ebay.

Yep. Their Good Night And Good Luck is locked as well.

Amazon UK is selling a few things cheap, and my interest was piqued in the "Tin Man" thread...

So I'm thinking of picking up the Tin Man, Island, and Highlander Steelbook. Just a tad more than $14 per disc (shipping/conversion included) when all is told... so very tempting.

I've seen reviews of Tin Man and the Island that make me think the quality on these will be fine... but am seeing mixed reviews on Highlander. I know it's an oldie and won't look stellar, and I don't have it on DVD but I figured I'd post & ask if anyone had any thoughts on importing any of these from the UK.

I don't have an "all region" player... but from what I've read these are region free (one of them is actually AB but that applies in my case).. so I should be "safe", just curious about the content.

so Psycho is coming to Holland through Universal in April.
expect a US release at the same time for the 50th anniversary.

The Island is an excellent buy, with PQ in Tier 1 in the PQ Thread.

That's what I've been reading. I have the DVD of the movie, and am surprised it hasn't made its way to a US release yet... "Tin Man" is something I am curious about and it sounds like it is good quality as well, though I know some didn't like the mini-series on Syfy (technically still SciFi at the time).

Highlander is the stumbling block.. It's currently out of stock, but is a steelbook and not available on Blu in the US... and while not stellar, is supposedly the best that movie has ever looked.

I'll probably end up biting on all three at once unless something else pops up that catches my interest.

I just got "Scream" from Australia.
The soundtrack is higher-pitched than it should be, like a lazy PAL dvd. Which is strange because it's 111mins at at 23.976hz like a normal release.

Sidebar: on the higher pitch PAL front. Why don't most of my PAL dvd's (Creepshow, Flash Gordon, Conan the Destroyer, Lost Highway, and others) sound any higher pitched than I am used to? Do studios reduce PAL soundtracks a few seminotes or something???
The only other imports I own are HD DVDs (Terminator 2 & Total Recall)... and I thought I remembered people saying those had a pitch issue, but I haven't noticed when I watch those movies.

with digital transfer, there really should be no issues with pitch whatsoever.

any semi-modern audio editing program can do a correct speedup without affecting the pitch.
my guess at why pitch shift followed us on to DVD is because it's what people were used to.
what amazes me is how they still manage to screw it up.

Is there a list somewhere of UK BR's not available in the US?

I'd be interested in that list myself. I managed to find a few places that have good list of importable (non-region coded) Blu rays... but then I have to sift through those to find movies that don't have a US release.

A list that just had the UK-only (or France-only or Germany-only, etc.) would be a good one.

Thats why I asked the question. I have tons of DVDs from outside the USA, and none of them sound all high pitched.
