Blu-ray Imports (General discussion, announcements and retailers) - Page 8

Hmm is that the first overseas release of "Crash" (2004)? I still haven't seen the US BD but it's one of the early Lionsgate releases, 20Mbps MPEG-2 on a BD-25, so it seems like it could stand to be improved.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Maybe it's the David Cronenberg Crash.
I believe the L.A. Crash name is used for the 2004 Paul Haggis movie (which is not clear from my post, sorry).

Hmm I see you're right about the existing German DVD, but I had checked before making my post and DVDCompare.net says (2004)'s DVD was by Ufa while (1996)'s was by Kinowelt, so unless the rights got shifted?

I guess I am not doing well with this one.

To be explicit...

The release is Ufa, it is the 2004 version and it is going to be titled L.A. Crash just like the DVD. The mistake I made was to leave off the L.A. in my post...

I would like to see the Cronenberg myself

Love the "Cliff Hanger" cover art. Does anyone know if the Blu Ray T2 release will be exactly the same as the HD DVD was? I bought it, what a let down (with so much build up hype) that one was.

Yeah, totally. Not blind buy material here.

I'm a Haneke fan though so still a must own for me.

Fans of this film might be more excited if it was being released by any other company than Entertainment in Video, given their cavalier attitude to Blu-ray encoding. They might encode the film at 1080p/24fps, or they might encode it at 1080i/25fps - their record on such things is all over the place. I'd wait for the reviews before spending my cash...

Isn't the director's cut being released in the US later this year?

The US version includes both cuts of the movie and is coming 7/29. It also has DTS-HD MA 7.1.

Does anyone know of the Bugsy Malone Blu-ray showing on xploited? How does it look and sound compared to the region 2 DVD? I'm interested in picking this one up! VC-1, AVC, or MPEG-2 encode?

It is very likely that it is the ITV release from June 23rd. Never actually seen one of their discs so not sure what they like to use though I vaguely recall VC-1? I could be wrong though.

I think one in their first batch ("Company of Wolves" maybe?) was VC-1 but I recall most of them were MPEG-2.

First release of the T2 director's cut and Stargate theatrical cut on BD. If the barebones Total Recall and T2 are indeed BD-50s, these should be higher bitrate VC-1 encodes since the HD DVDs would both fit on BD-25s.

I wonder if the French Stargate will also be an SE?

EDIT: Optimum has changed the details on Stargate, removing the theatrical cut!
A small mistake on the listing for TOTAL RECALL - the film should be presented at 1.85:1, since that was the theatrical ratio.

Also, still no mention of a mono soundtrack included on the BR version of THE FOG. I wrote to Optimum about this a week ago and - surprise! surprise! - no one has responded.

France:

Chicken Run on September 10th, 2008
Bandidas on September 10th, 2008
Zodiac on July 6th, 2008
Walk the line from on October 1st, 2008
La jeune fille et les loups on September 17th, 2008
Cortex on August 20th, 2008
Le secret de Brokeback Mountain on October 1st, 2008
Deux frères on September 10th, 2008
L'ours on September 10th, 2008

Chicken Run appears to be a Fox Pathe release in France... which does not bode well for Region Free perhaps.

It also appears that they did a dub version for France - though one would assume that both audio tracks are on the Blu-ray.

What's wrong with the stereo 5.1 version? It's not a "re-recorded" overdubbed track like JAWS, it basically pushes the mono sound into stereo but doesn't do a whole lot with it. As a fan of the movie I liked the DTS-HD sound on the HD-DVD, which would certainly be the same mix as this BD version. Overall it's not much different than the mono track but has more stereophonic presence, while still retaining the "purity" of the mono mix.

WTF?!!!
I was joking about this one being released on BD. It was just a joke.
Well if BD wasn't official after getting Metropolis and Faces of Death, it is now. Blu-ray is here to stay.

Xylon - no comparison pics... ok some comparison pics.

Tartan Video have gone bust and so i'm not sure how their release of Funny Games on the 28th of July will be affected.

I wonder why Optimum have scrapped all the extra's....It costs a fortune to get them all classified at the BBFC but surely that's not the reason ? Licensing rights maybe ?
Tartan UK as well? I thought it was just the US Tartan that stopped?
