Comparing Two Toshiba DVRs

Thread Starter
I want to purchase a DVD recorder. While I'll be using it occasionaly for recording off my Tivo, it will be used primarily for playback. Neither a tuner, nor a hard drive are necessary for my purpose.

I've narrowed my choices to two Toshiba units:

D-R410, and D-KR10.

Does any one here have any experience with these machines? Any help in choosing would be greatly appreciated. After checking the Toshiba website, I can barely distinguish between the two machines.

My budget for a DVR is $200 or less. Are either of these two machines acceptable, or should I be considering another unit?

there's a thread on just the dr-410 right here in the 'dvd recorders' forum.
it should answer some of your questions.

based on what i have read, i would get one in a heartbeat.
a 410 will probably be my next dvdr.

The KR10 is identical to the R400, except that the KR10 also includes an HDMI cable in the box. The R410 is the newer version of the R400. Those two are identical except for the 410's additional REGZA interface (control over HDMI through a Toshiba TV), a pretty useless feature, as far as I can tell. If the KR10 is a better price, I see no reason not to choose it over the 410. I've had a KR10 for several months now and am very pleased with it. I don't think anything else comes close for the price.

does the 410 have variable bit recording as opposed to the set recording times?
thanks.

The 400 didn't, so I doubt the 410 does either. That's the biggest thing I miss from my old Panasonic.

my pan. es15 and 2 tosh dr2s all have v.b.r., love it.
guess i wouldnt use 410 for more than 2 hr content anyway, like my other toshes. 410 would make good backup, at least.
i use the panny for 2 hrs+, up to 3 hrs on widescreen and 4x3 stuff.

I bouth a Toshiba D-KR10-KU yesterday at Costco for $99 and burned my first DVD from the cable DVR this morning. Recorded from a 16:9 HD program and the playback quality is 16:9 but the resolution is SD. MY TV doesn't have HDMI so I can't comment about upscaling to 1080.

The disk was a DVD-R Ver 2.0 set for 1 hour recording time. The burned disk played well on a Sony DVD player and on my computer. I was able to pause the recording and fast forward through the commercials then start recording again. No blips or dropouts when recording resumed.

The KR10 is a little noisy. You can hear the stepper motors when the audio is muted. The construction seems light weight, almost flimsy.

I'm not an expert, but the default settings worked right out of the box without any setup. I did have to go to the manual to finalize the disk.

So far, so good. I used the composite video that came with the unit. I wonder if picture quality would improve with S-Video cables?

Many thanks

I have several of these (KR10 and DR-400) and they are very nice for the price as long as you understand what they are (sounds like you do). Nice picture quality, signal pass-thru on the composite, a unique "satellite" record mode (record starts when signal appears on input), small, light-weight, decent features and it excels as a player and occasional recorder. It also plays DivX very well which is super at this price point. And there's HDMI and up-conversion and so on.

You will find it hard to find anything close for the price. Either of the units you mentioned will do fine - get whichever one is cheaper and available.

My Costco doesn't carry this model. What city are you in?
