The Onkyo/Integra direct firmware updates - Page 100

Trying to complete the main firmware update on the 886. Holding "Tuning Up" and plugging it in. It remains on standby and does not show "Main Update Mode". The tuner up button works with the tuner. Any ideas what is wrong?

Nevermind Re-read 1st post. For this model it is ENTER not TUNING UP like in the instructions and walk-thru on prior page.

thanks very much-this is/was new 886, and I've handled enough equipment not to abuse..to have to return to Denver center after many frustrating hours of work is the pits-also very poor WAF...
Contact with Onkyo tech support gave instructions for reset and a few other things, but did not mention the (presumably) know board problem.

I wasn't aware that this same issue popped up with 886 units! I had imported an Integra DTC9.8 originally from the US and it had this defect
After I tried - without luck - to find an Onkyo service in Germany which would repair it, I ended up sending it back to the US... and it was lost in transit; just my luck!

I now have an Onkyo PR-SC886, which is officially available in Germany from a dealer to whom I can bring back the unit personally if something should stop working!

Best regards,
Oliver

Yes. Listening to a CD that had female vocals I liked the sound out of the box. Sweet and clean. After the DSP update, there was a subtle change to a more digital and less refined sound. The trouble is that there is no way back

Got the E2 PROM ERROR today on my Onkyo TX-SR705. Doing a factory reset fixed it. Hopefully it won't happen again...

Unfortunately I have the 1.0 loader. Any one tried to send the unit in for firmware update? Did they charge anythign and how long it took? I signed up in the self-update dongle thread but it seems the line moves pretty slowly for east coast guys. Thanks in advance!

FYI, I was able to use the monoprice Serial to USB converter to update my 805 under Windows 7. I went straight from 1.01 to 1.08.
I also updated the HDMI.

Wasnt able to update the DSP yet. It never gets to the point where it says it's writing DSP1, 2 or 3. I'm using an HD-A3 player. I'll see if I can't borrow a friends regular optical CD player.

I had the same problem with my 9.8 in Australia, I have been trying to get it repaired here for the last 18 months. I found someone to replace the cracked board but in doing so they did something else to it and it has no video out and they don't know what the problem is. The 9.9 is sold here in Au and the dealer is one I got off the distributors web site as a authorised repairer
The australian distributor Amber Technology have refused to offer any assistance in the repair even though I would be covering the cost of parts and labour.
I too might have to send mine back to the states but I'd be concerned it could end up like Olivers, any way I'm still hoping I can find someone to fix it.
Cheers

BTW even in the US it's not easy to find a Service Center with decent turnaround time.

Has anyone else had sound quality on CD's worsen? I've heard of people getting improved sound after updating the DSP, but this is the first time I've seen a report of sound actually getting worse. Of course I skipped a few dozen pages of this thread.

+1. Though I can't say I noted any improvement per se when I performed the DSP update (primarily to address and resolve the "DTS bomb" issue, which it certainly did), there absolutely was no decrease in sound quality from any of my sources.

Most people become adapted to a particular sound over time and can regard changes, even positive ones, as a decrease in quality. Some people actually enjoy the boom and whomp of room modes and have a hard time re-adapting to a more accurate sound.

Also, some people have screwed up the EQ/DSP.

Many possibilities.

I used A Capella female vocals and two addition listeners. I compared the 885 and 885 by switching the cables so there were no other variables. The 886 was beautiful before the DSP upgrade and a bit scratchy and distorted after. Not huge but there non-the-less. I also ran pure mode.

Some people thing that brighter is better since they can hear more.
I am not some people

I also felt the 886 Dolby digital was too hot, emphasizing the sibilants that are present is lower quality feeds. It bothered me enough to stop the sale of my 885 on Ebay (which was going nicely) and return the 886.

Of course, I was under-whelmed with the performance of the Audyssey after trying it 5 times. I guess that puts me in the minority.

FWIW,

- Rich

P.S.

Hi Gurkey,
If you happen to come across the 1.04 files for a DTR-9.9 in your travels, could you please update Rapidshare? The old link has expired.
Thanks!

I had tried to find someone to fix it here in Germany before I sent it back to the US. I contacted Onkyo Germany and they actually called me back and referred me to a company here which handles their service repairs. But when I called there, they told me that they had never heard of that model and they couldn't help me because they neither had access to the service manual nor the parts for anything that is not sold in Germany...

That cured me of trying to import such devices myself if they exceed a certain price limit...

I sent in my 805 (purchased on 6/17/2007 and made in Japan) for a complete firmware update and to be checked out for running hot. Even though my unit has always run very hot, I never considered it a problem. The only reason I mentioned it when I sent the unit in was because the person I talked with at the regional service center (located in northern NJ) said that I needed a reason for sending it in and that a desire to have a complete firmware update done was not, in itself, an adequate reason to have the unit serviced.

I just got the unit back yesterday. It took about two weeks from the day I sent it to the day I got it back. I would have received the unit back a little sooner but they had to order parts for it. I had to pay to ship it to them but they paid to ship it back. There were no other charges since the unit was still under warranty (barely).

Here are my before and after firmware updates:

Additionally, the person I talked with at the service center said that several ICs were replaced. They told me that they ASSUMED that this was done to address the heat issue since to the best of their knowledge, there were no updates that would have involved replacing ICs (unfortunately, the person I talked with was not the tech who did the work).

Hopefully this information helps answer your questions.

Now I have two questions:

1) Does anyone know what the latest official Onkyo firmware levels are for the 805?

2) Which DSP(s) needs to be updated to address the DTS bomb problem and do my current DSP firmware levels indicate that I got this update?

Thanks.

Out of curiosity, what are your post-update observations, if any, of the heat issue?

Due to buying a new Kuro, adding an Emotiva amp, upgrading to a new Oppo Blu-Ray player, and deciding to build my own audio cabinet during the period while my 805 was gone, I'm not quite in the position to test it out yet but hopefully, in the very near future, I'll be able to. At that point, I'll definitely report back with the results.

With respect to my 805, it has always run extremely hot. Before I got dual fans for it, I could not keep my hand on top of it for more than a second or so when it was really being pushed hard. And yes, it had more than adequate ventilation (it was sitting on the top of a cabinet with nothing above it or around it).
Well, I have a small update. I plugged the receiver in with nothing connected to it and turned it on. After a few minutes, the back right quadrant was VERY warm. It's been a long time since I used it without external fans but I think this is the behavior it exhibited before I sent it to the Onkyo service facility. Therefore, heat-wise, so far there seems to be no improvement due to the changed ICs. I'll still check it under a load when I get everything hooked back up (and report my findings). Also, I'm going to contact the service center again and see if I can get a more definitive answer regarding the exact purpose of the IC change.

After spending far too much time searching around, it seems that 1.08 is the latest version for the 805 (it looks like there is a 1.09 version out for the 905).

Also, I saw mention of some E2 PROM error that seems to require an IC change. Maybe this is what was done to mine at the service facility.

And finally, I noticed that one person still experienced the DTS Bomb issue, even after having updated to the latest firmware levels. This is disappointing since this is the main reason I sent my unit in.

Has anyone with a 906 upgraded it to FW v1.04 successfully and without any post-upgrade issue?
I have about had it. After literally 12 hours of trying to update my Onkyo 876 to version 1.4 I have given up. I have received the constant "port already in use" or "error reading comm device."

My firmware is version 1.01/08801a. I tried everything from switch to every comm port in the device manager to match the updater with no success. I am running windows vista ultimate 64bit. Everything on the update displays correctly until I hit main update and I either get the error messages or it just sits there. Maybe its this cord i bought from ebay that shipped from Hong Kong, but my computer recognizes it with the vista drivers so I have no clue. I also tried to change the transfer rates with no success. I have almost read every page of this thread and i am goooooooing nutz not being able to update guys! What the heck am I doing wrong?

This is a problem (port assignment) with your PC / notebook.
Some application is already using or at least keeping hold of the relevant COM port.

Try to use an older system with a clean install.

- Main firmware update: The update routine uses a RS232 connection to the rear of the unit.
The RS232 cable must be of type straight through (no crossover) with a male and female connector at the end.
You need a PC with a COM1 port (default) or a USB => RS232 converter for this, as described elsewhere.
The update procedure is been initiated through a supplied setup software, which handles everything.

Integra:
The update instructions differ somewhat for the Integras (excerpt)
II) Procedure for Upgrading Main FW on the unit:
Connect the RS232 port of your PC to the receiver (unplugged) RS232 port by using a RS232 straight cable. Keep unit unplugged.
Press Tuning up button and in this condition you should plug the receiver in the AC outlet. You will see on the display Main Update mode.
After this follow these steps.
a) Open App_Updater_XXX folder and Double click on update.exe. You will see following GUI.
b) Check the COM port. It should be same as the RS232 port of your PC connected to your receiver (usually COM1).
c) Click on Main Update button

Hi,

It's still unclear to me how to start the Main firmware update for Onkyo 886/Integra 9.9.

Gurkey's original posting states that pressing either the Tuning Up button or the Enter key while plugging in the power will put the prepro in the Main Update mode. In his update instructions he uses the Tuning Up option.

DrSpike69 indicates that he used the Tuning Up option to upgrade his 886.

However, I have been unable to get the to Main Update mode using the the Tuning Up option. I have been able to get to the Main Update mode using the Enter key, but I was unsuccessful in proceeding with the update after clicking on update.exe. All I got was a "Searching F/W..." message. I had to shut off the prepro in this state and restart to return to my normal operation.

No doubt I'm doing something incorrectly.

Thanks.

Larry

Hi,

As I mentioned in the posting prior to yours I had to turn off the prepro and power it back on to resume normal operation.

I don't know what we are doing wrong to be getting this perpetual "Search F/W...." message.

I know that many people have successfully upgraded their equipment per Gurkey's directions. Kudo's. I destroyed a 9.8 and bought a 9.9. I consider myself tech savy but when it comes to this upgrade, I have decided not to do it. I do not want anyone to come to my home and run Audyssey Pro which is what the upgrade seems to allow. For those enjoying their equipment the way it arrived from the factory, continue enjoying it. Bricking a unit takes all the joy out of ownership. The upgrade process requires a good bit of precision because there are so many variables involved.
