I also tried the firmware update using a USB to serial cable, but I think the software that came with the cable is not compatible with XP. I kept getting a wrong port error and it was showing com1. Very frustrating as I am not super computer savvy.
I had a similar problem with a brand new Keyspan adapter. As it turned out, the problem was not with the drivers or XP or the cable. The problem was that com ports 1, 2 & 3 were being used by other processes on my laptop and the Keyspan adapter was glomming on to com 4. No matter what I tried, I could not get the laptop to free up either of com 1, 2 or 3. So I pulled out an old laptop that had a 9 pin serial port, copied the firmware to it, went to Radio Shack and bought a DB9 M/F straight serial cable, and the firmware update worked like a charm. I knew I kept that old laptop around for some reason.
BTW, the tone + button is just that. It is the + button just to the right of the tone button.
