Need Help - Receiver related, Is Onkyo a good brand?

A have a few questions, I am not that knowledgeable with what Brand names are trustworthy or that make quality products as I do in other subjects.

I have been looking for a new Receiver for a little while since everything owned currently within the house is very old, you name is, VCR's, DVD's, Receivers, CRT TV's, All the electronics 'entertainment wise' is very out of date.

I wanted to ask anyone or everyone if they feel that Onkyo is a good company, do they make reliable and great-quality products in terms of their Receivers? or should I trust another company?

Why I ask that is because I had found this:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...762&CatId=3418

for $365 CAD, for that price and it supports 7.1? I usually see anything that supports 7.1 would range from $600+, as well as it has 3-4 HDMI ports.

Is that a good deal? I want one of the best receivers, but nothing too expensive, the Best and cheapest basically.....

Also, a question about HDMI that has never truly been answered: Is basically any HDMI cord that is $50+ a scam? Would having it 'Gold plated' or everything else that they consider features be unnecessary 'customer-eye-popping-Bull' to try to Wow them with stuff that doesn't matter nor makes sense to them? Would 'Any' HDMI cord, cheap or expensive work the same? Or do the expensive ones actually offer a significant difference?

Basically I'm just going to use it with my future HDTV, for Movies and Games(PS3), I want great quality and a reliable product, I want something that at least has 2-3 HDMI ports, with a Digital Optical Audio optionally, but something in the range of $200-$300 but still sounds clear, great, and is awesome in every way, lol....- For example, I needed new speakers as of recent and a great set was the Logitech X-540 Surround Sound Speakers, being 5.1, Logitech brand(which I know is good) for only $69-79, That's a great price for a great product.

Why not read the Onkyo (model specific) threads? They are loaded up with details on both the good and the bad.

Link doesn't work but I'm guessing it was to one of the Onkyo HTIB Systems Tiger had on sale. If so the yes, they are highly regarded in the HTIB market. For receivers alone they are a great bang for the buck, probably the most features you can get at the price and yes they are a quality brand. Yamaha, Pioneer, HK, Marantz and Denon are also good companies in the same price range. Between them would be preference and what features your looking for at the price point.

For quality cables at a great price go to www.monoprice.com
No need to spend $50-$100 on cabling at best buy when you can spend $10 at monoprice!

Good Luck!

That is the Onkyo 506 - I do not believe it takes audio from the HDMI only video switching; so for lossless audio from Blu-ray you would to decode in the player and have analog out (the 506 appears to have multi-channel analog in, you should verify this in the owners manual).

As mentioned above, post in the Onkyo thread for feedback from owners.

Hdblu - when you make stmts like that, please explain to those the reason why you won't buy Onkyo again.

To the OP, I bought the 705 and am happy with it. Small pblm it won't let the LG Super B200 HD/BLu player hook up by HDMI. Other than that its good.

Check out the 605 thread and check Amazon.com for prices or even ShopOnkyo.com I think. Shop sometimes has refurbs on sale.

Try and get one that has atleast 2 hdmi ins , which is the 605, the 705 has 3 and 805 has 4
