Adult Gamer: Why do I need a wii?

I recently saw a wii while I was shopping for other things so I snatched it up. Then after thinking about it I really couldn't think of why I got it. I mean don't get me wrong I like Nintendo. Hell I have almost every console they have made in my attic. I just am not sure I should have picked it up. I am feeling it was just like a knee jerk reaction to seeing one available. Well maybe not all that but mostly. I have played wii sports with my nephews on their wii which was fun. I just don't see any Nintendo exclusives that really hook me. I have been bored with mario since N64. Metroid seems nice but it isn't really giving me the gotta have it vibe. All the other stuff I would like are all out on the other consoles. I guess I want to have a reason to have it other than just to be able to say I have all 3. I am also wondering about their online service. What are some good and bad features it has and how does it stack up against XBL and PSN.

I know this is the wii forums and it is not really the best place to get a fair comparison but I have faith in you guys not to sugar coat it. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Graphics isn't that big of a deal with me. The game just needs to be fun and have good game play.

Zelda?

Also, if you enjoyed Mario 64 and didn't like Sunshine, then you really should try Galaxy, because I know a lot of people who were the same way and loved Galaxy.

Online is very hit or miss at this point (mostly miss). The potential exists for great online play but as of now its not really there. Brawl has decent online but no voice chat, Madden had great online (no friend codes) but was buggy and nobody is playing it anymore. I think the game I spent the most time with online in is Mario Strikers, that was pretty fun but a pretty basic online setup. Mario Kart at the end of the month should have the best online yet, though thats not saying much.

You should also look at some of the 'oddball' type titles. Zack and Wiki for example looks like a kid's game but is a great adventure / puzzle solving game.

For me the Wii works best with games where the Wiimote really changes the game experience for the better. Tiger Woods 08 is the Wii game I play most right now because playing it with the Wiimote feels so much better and more natural than a control pad. Ghost Squad's action mimics those arcade style light gun games very well (and there are other gun games like Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles). Although I haven't tried it yet, I'll be curious about Sega Superstars Tennis as, again, the Wiimote should make for a more immersive experience.

So for me, I tend to stick with games where the Wiimote really makes the gameplay more immersive and interesting.

Don't bother with Sega Tennis, its total crap. The swing of the remote is the equivalent to a button press and has absolutely nothing to do with where the ball goes. Not to mention the timing for it doesn't seem to be exactly right, and its just not very good.

Agree on Sega Tennis. As much as I wanted to like it and play it as a replacement for Wii Tennis, it just doesn't cut it.

As others have stated, when the Wii remote functions in such a way as to immerse you in the gameplay is when the Wii shines. Personally, I don't feel there are are a great number of those games yet, but I'm very optomistic such games will be coming out this year.

No N64 Mario is what soured me on Mario. I played Paper Mario one day at EBGames for a few minutes with my nephew and it seemed fun though. I guess I will just have to rent a lot of wii games.

Yeah I tried the demo for Sega Superstars Tennis on XBL and you are right even the button timing was a little off.

Thanks to all for the heads up on Sega Tennis; I'd seen the Wii version selling for $29.99 at Circuit City and had been thinking of picking it up; I'll wait for something else now instead.

lol I thought this was going to be about adult games when I saw the world adult in the title.

Give it time, someone will probably come up with some through WiiWare!

I also recommend Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 as a game that uses the Wii controls for more innovative gameplay.

My opinion as an adult gamer is: You don't. I have one. But I also have a 360. I could easily live without the Wii. It can be fun but the main role of the Wii in our house is for the family use... kids, the wife, etc. I have more than enough great games to play on the 360.

So, I'd say you should only keep it if you want to share your gaming hobby with more casual gamers.
RTRic, what sort of games are you in to? It might be easier to make recommendations that way. From the sounds of it though, it seems like you're already reasonably aware of the system's library, and it just might not be for you. But like others have said, maybe it's worth hanging onto for the occasional casual gaming session with kids, family, and non-gaming visitors. Even ridiculous, really kinda poorly implemented $30 games like Cooking Mama are quite entertaining when played in a group. And well, since this is the "adult gamer" thread, being drunk always helps, of course.

Oh, and *obligatory No More Heroes recommendation*

I second this opinion; dead on.

Get Korinpa Marble Mania and your opinion on the Wii will change

There is nothing like it on any other console...absolutely PERFECT controls and very addictive gameplay.

I just got House of the Dead 2 and 3 for my Bday. I have never played it before. I really am enjoying it. It is just like playing one of those arcade games with the gun, shooting zombies. I would definately recommend it for good mindless blasting away.

IMO Nintendo Wii is nice to have if you have kids. There are alot of kid friendly games. There are your share of adult games, but not as much as the PS3 or Xbox.
I bought the Wii mostly for my kids enjoyment.
I like the Wii because of some unique playing with the remote. Without that I'd be in the same shoe, why bother with Gamecube 1.5. Even with the same games as the 360/PS3, I'd opt for the lesser graphics version on the Wii just because the remote is more fun.
I'm almost 30. I thoroughly enjoyed Galaxy and wasn't a huge fan of Mario 64. I bypassed Sunshine but my friend lent it to me so I'll check it out after I finish one of the best Wii games, Resident Evil 4.

If you like FPS only then get a 360. If you like 3rd person platformers like Zelda, NMH, and RE4 then stick with your Wii. I would recommend renting though. The new Star Wars Force Unleashed is supposed to be/play well and I think Gamepro says the Wii gets the most content.

Adult gamer do not need a Wii. Nintendo is targetting old people and girlfriends with the Wii and that is who most of the system's games are geared towards. My girlfriend loves her Wii and she never played a game in her lifetime. That is who Nintendo is selling to, not to gamers.

The only adult gamers who do need a Wii are people who are big fans of Nintendo. Their output in the staple franchises has been very good. Now, if you ask me that is not enough to drop $250 on a system. $150, though, maybe.

And if you are a very hardcore gamer, of course, the VC is excellent. But if you are a very hardcore gamer, you don't need an excuse to buy new hardware!

if you hate mario then you bought the wrong system man! check out resident evil 4 though.

Mario Kart Wii will be out at the end of this month. I'm hopeful that game will be reason enough to own a Wii. Mario Kart 64 is probably my favorite game of all time.

Its released in Europe this week and apparently was already leaked to the internet, and early impressions are that its apparently a lot more like MK64 than Double Dash, which is good as far as I'm concerned.

Adult gamers do not need a Wii.

People who love games do need a Wii.

I say this because there are too many "adult gamers" out there who have forgotten why they most likely got into gaming in the first place....FUN!

Your edit stated that you do not care about graphics, but only fun and gameplay matter to you. Those components are exactly what Mario, Zelda, Metroid, SSBB, and probably Mario Kart Wii will have. If none of these games interest you, then I think you should sell your Wii to someone else who wants one. Unless of course you want to keep it around for the kids or family time.

I already have 2 360s and you want me to get a 3rd? LOL

You all are right. It is about using the wiimote to play games like you never could before. Have they tampered with a lot of the retro games? Is there a set price for those games or does it vary from game to game? Do you just buy the games or do you buy points to buy the game? Is there a place where it lists all the content available for download like for retro games and game addons?

They haven't changed any of the Virtual Console games at all. Literally its the exact same game as the original. (The only difference being Wave Race 64, in which they removed the ads for generic ones.)

Rule of thumb is:

NES 500 points
SNES 800 points
N64 1000 points
Sega Master System 500 points
Sega Genesis 800 points
Turbografx 600 points
Neo Geo 900 points

Some game with licensing issues or imports don't follow this exactly. A Wii point is equivalent to a cent, but you do have to buy it in certain size increments unfortunately.

A list of the games and their prices: http://www.nintendo.com/wii/virtualconsole/games

I don't know about the Sega Master System (Wonder Boy is the only game for it anyway), but the controller info for the other systems (though remember you can't use the Classic Controller for GC games):

Don't agree at all that it's "just for kids". You can get zelda games for no other system and that alone is plenty reason for me to have it. Also whenever developers get smart there will be sports games worth getting on here 100 times more than on other systems.

Yes I'm curious to see how Prize Fighter from 2k Sports will be. The bad news is that we have to wait until Fall while the 360 version comes out in the summer. The good news is that it allows them to tinker with the controls. I am looking forward to a boxing game superior to Wii Sports.

I'm 38 & the wife is 34. Are we "adult gamers"?

Both of us love the Wii. For her, she used to love the old NES/SNES/Genesis stuff. Have plenty of those titles via VC now. For me, it's been Galaxy, GHIII, Metroid3, No More Heroes, Splinter Cell Dbl Agent, RE4.

For both of us & our oldest daughter (5), it's Wii Sports/Play (although my little girl loves to watch daddy play Mario).

Mario Kart Wii & Star Wars:Force Unleashed are already preordered. Just rented House of the Dead2/3.

I'd say a decent split btwn "adult" & "kiddie" stuff. Plus all the current Wii web features. #1 place I check the weather forecast these days is via Wii.

I do agree that most "great" Wii titles are still the ones via Nintendo. But other companies are starting to step up with equally cool games. Have heard that developers were kinda caught off guard w/ the success of the Wii, hence the lack of strong 3rd party titles.

But Nintendo has proven w/ their own games that amazing stuff is doable on the Wii. Other developers will catch up. It's in their best interests to generate quality titles for the technologically "lesser" platform.

You know....the one that is outselling the other 2 machines by a pretty decent margin?

And that's the other beauty of Wii. It's "cheap", or at least less expensive than the others. Even diehard PS3/360 folk could also jump onto Wii for not a huge cost upfront (unless you buy one on ebay, of course).

I do enjoy Wii Sports boxing as does my 5 yr old.

But a "realistic" boxing game coupled with proper use of the Wii control scheme is something I'd buy.

As my last post mentioned, I have this preordered. That is good news (loved MK64, never played DblDash). Plus, the chance to race as one of your Miis will appeal to the kids in this house.
I can't wait to race in Mario Kart with my Mr. T Mii.

For adult gamers, I would recommend Resident Evil 4, even if you've already played it. The pointer functionality really does make it ridiculously better. Tomb Raider Anniversary is also good, and Mercury Meltdown Revolution is a really fun and pretty puzzler title that is like $12 on Amazon, so I'd recommend that as well.
