Wal-mart offers up HD DVD returns - Page 2

I am really curious where all this money is coming from. Best Buy gave me $100, Amazon $50, and now Wally is going to buy back one of my players for full price?

Out of all of the retailers taking a hit over HD DVD sales and returns, WM was the one that I thought was in the worst position due to all of the "down-home, good-value" advertising they did with "regular people testimonials." More than buyers at specialty stores, or even those at big -box retailers that "knew what they were getting into and jumped in anyway,"... ah, who am I kidding it was all about the price.

I contacted my Walmart and asked if I can just get $50 rather than $100. :P I told them that I want to keep the player. However, they refused.

Many folks here, iirc, says a2 is better than a30. Why a2?

The thing I find most amusing is that Amazon is still selling HD dvd players..

Somebody is asleep at the wheel..

Perhaps Wal-Mart feels guilty now for being one of the major contributors to the death of a great system...

Something tells me that with respect to the biggest announcement this year in the electronics world (HD DVD demise), that one of the largest online retailers in the world (Amazon), is not "asleep at the wheel" when it comes to their surplus stock.

They know full well what they are doing and have planned every sales decision since. But obviously that does not mean it is the correct move or that all interested parties agree.

I thought the original receipt had to be sent for the MIR. I make copies of my MIR so I have a copy. Should work right?

Has anyone been able to return the Xbox 360 HD DVD addon player?

Nope, just a copy. Most mail-in-rebates I've seen only require a copy of the original receipt.

So how are they actually doing this refund in the store? If I bring in my A2 with receipt and box, are they giving store credit, cash back if I paid cash, credit back on card if credit was used? And since I would have already paid off any credit card (November purchase) does Walmart do like some stores and just give cash back?

Details please.

NICE!

Gonna return my $98 A2 tonight.

And Best Buy just happened to have a pair of open box players yesterday that I snatched up.

An A20 and an A30 both for $29.99. And they gave me 2x $50 gift cards for buying them right after at customer service.

Who cares where the money for this is coming from. As long as it keeps flowing my way!!!

Seems silly to buy it back for full price, and then sell it for half, don't ya think?

They are issuing credits from what I read. Not cash refunds. So they are making some money back on upselling to something else.

Are you telling me you walked out of there having paid $60 for a $100 gift certificate and got two free players?? WOW. Glad we went to all that trouble to ship a player to Canada for you eh?

Nice...I already have several players (one A2 from Walmart) but am considering buying an A2 with receipt and 14 movies today from a guy for $120. He bought it from Walmart during the $98 special. Hmmm...14 movies for around $20 sounds good.

Nice.

I actually used my $50 GC from an A2 I bought in Feb of 07 to buy the A20, and then used the $50 GC from that one to buy the A30. Didn't actually cost anything out of pocket. Altho there is an empty place in my heart since HD DVD gave up.

LOL. Yup. At least it works either way. HD DVD wins, I keep the A2 and enjoy it. HD DVD loses, I get most of my money back, keep the 5 free discs, and get lucky with an A20 and A30 plus a whole bunch of cheap discs...

Not that it wasn't appreciated. (coolhand bent over backwards to get a $98 WM player in my hands when you couldn't find one for less than $250 in canada) I still have the player hooked up in the bedroom, speficially kept that one hooked up and have a D3 in storage since the 2nd gen players aren't as picky about scratched discs as the 3rd gen ones...

Did your return box have the UPC intact? The guy I am buying from said he peeled his UPC sticker off.
Love my A2 but its going back... $70 open box A3 at BB with a $15 2 year warranty... hard to say no to cheaper and longer warranty. Love all these credits and exchanges!!
So I was able to return the Xbox 360 HD DVD addon player at Wal-Mart today. They had trouble getting their system to accept the item (even with a receipt) since I had cut out the UPC, but in the end I got a full refund. Out of about 6 employees I had to deal with, only one manager had any heard about the HD DVD refund, everyone else was pretty clueless.
Because of this thread, tonight I rushed over to a guy's house that was selling an A2 plus 14 HD DVD movies for $120. He included in the sale a COPY of his Walmart receipt where he had purchased five A2s during the early November $98 dollar special.

I left his house and went to the nearest Walmart. So I did not get stuck with the player, I had called the Walmart prior to my purchase from the guy to ask if they were aware of the return program. The CS manager told me she was unaware, but after I sounded like I knew what I was talking about she said come in and bring the memo and ask for her.

Of course when I get to the CS counter I ask for the manager I spoke to because the associate is clueless. The manager appears and sees what I have, gives the thumbs up and says you are good to go (almost like she had done some checking before I arrived). The associate hears this and begins the refund process but the register keeps making that error tone everytime she enters the UPC. The CS manager walks over and has the same issue. She comments that it may be because they no longer carry the item.

I then ask if she wants to see the Walmart memo I printed since it has instructions and the UPC codes. She says "yeah!" and proceeds to read it, enter a few keys and everything goes smooth.

They cross out one of the five A2s listed on my receipt and I get $104 and change cash back. The CS manager asks if she can keep my memo copy and WSJ article for future reference. I gave it to her.

14 HD DVDs for $15 total tonight. Now I am looking for 4 more used, cheap A2s.

They will be shocked when I return mine - I still have the original box and everything. I am replacing it with a H/K DVD-48 I got for about the same price at the H/K eBay store.
I called my local Walmart where I bought the A2 for my Dad. They sounded skeptical and made no promises. I'm not sure they are going to exchange me because they said it has to have the box. I told them that according to the statement from corporate, I needed the reciept and the player, not the box.......Any suggestions for me?
so can someone who's not going to return theirs, Scan their reciept and sent me a PM with a link to it?

really i've search everwhere for mine but can't find it.

That is why I posted my detailed experience above. To give a little assistance.

Summary...
Talk to a CS manager. Let them know you have the Walmart memo in hand in addition to the WSJ press write up (they will assume it is like a press release). Also state that the Walmart reason is because the format is dead and many loyal customers invested in it. Note to them that the info states no packaging is needed. Do not deal with low level associates. If all else fails try another Walmart. God knows they are everywhere.

no, i removed them all. no prob. i mentioned that a few posts back.

all wm employees here and bentonville that i first talked to had not been informed of deal before i informed them. then bentonville lady checked and confirmed.

before i did this deal i had to call the local store yesterday (tues), again today, then bentonville (?), then local store again, and again, the local store called me and i went over to conclude deal this afternoon. a piece of phone work.

lesson is call and confirm they know about return/refund deal.
