having spent alot on processors before....why spend that much money on a unit based on a generic board.....seems silly to me, and a very expensive hobby

What generic board are you referring to?
While I am anticipating the release of the 502... word has it that it is not the processor I had hoped it would be.

We'll see.

Do you know what it is based on?

Yup.

Oh wait, you want me to TELL you? ;-)

Its a real ML design- fully differential audio, etc. Analog audio is architected similarly to the 40, but updated with newer components. The video path is all new, broadcast quality. Once the announcement is official, (no, I don't know when that will happen ;-) I may be able to say more.

Spoke with ML. There is a good chance that reps will have the information by the end of this week. Shipping by the end of the month if my ears did not deceive me.

6 HDMI INPUT BUT 1.1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What does this hdmi 1.1 mean at the end of the day? If you connect a bluray, the mega dollar dacs in the ML no 502 lay dorman as it passes through the sound of the Panasonic dacs as an example? Sony PS3 would be incompatible with lossless codecs since it does not internally decode them? Can someone please explain?
I don't have info on any internal decoding abilities...yet But if the player is outputing in PCM (meaning the player is decoding the DTS MA HD, TrueHD) it should work just fine.

The 2 biggest benefits for HDMI 1.3 is the deep color which is not part of the Blu-Ray spec and lip sync which I've read has not been implemented as of yet (both send/receive needs to have this feature to make it work).

So at the end of the day, the DACs will still be ML's.

If I mis-spoke, please correct.

Edit: I believe what most people have been looking for is BITSTREAMing the TrueHD and DTS MA HD so the processor would decode it. This is one of the things we are waiting to see if the ML 502 does/will do internal decoding of the newer formats. It "seems" like the trend is to have the player do the decoding instead of the processor. As long as it delivers quality, I don't mind who does the decoding all things being equal (but usually isn't).

Got it Jim. Thank you.

the new firmware for the PS3 can now decode DTS-MA, so you would just have the PS3 do the decoding and send it via LPCM to the ML

Who said anything about the 502 running "mega dollar" DAC's?

There is no difference if you send as PCM or bitstream.

No mention of such HD decoding in the manual.

I was assuming that their $ 30,000.00 processor would use the finest implementation of the finest dacs, which is why they are charging that kind of coinage.
$30K is a lot of dough... Does anyone know what is so special about it?
If I understand :the 502 can't decode the DTSHD: so we have to use the dacs from a 300$ player to go throught a 30000$ proc ?
My question is :what a 502 is made for ?
Is it so expencive to have HDMI 1.3 instead of 1.1 !!!
The No. 40 was also $30,000 MSRP. I'm a little surprised that the new Mark Levinson processor is the same price as the older one! Obviously, charging that kind of money for a Surround Processor in this day and age with the Denon AVP-A1HD coming in at $7,500 MSRP is shocking because the Denon piece has the whole shabang and then some. Plus, we are in the all digital domain nowadays so companies need to jusify the premium being charged. In the US, Denon doesn't give that much discount but here we get a handsome discount off MSRP. My dealer has informed me of the price and availability (mid-May). It's very attractive.

I just can't understand the Meridian bickering over HDMI jitter or the slowness of Theta in this. Denon has hassle free HDMI implementation. I can't understand the holding back by these companies.

The new Krell flagship was rumoured to be $35,000 which is another shocker! The only person who will buy it is the person who is paying $750 / meter for the cast cables!

Right now the new Denon flagship processor is the dog's bollocks. Lexicon and Merdian need to step up to the plate real fast with new models that are around $15,000 to compete or provide something extraordinary that justifies it.

In my personal order of preference:

1. Denon AVP-A1HD
2. MC-12 HD
3. Anthem D2

the rest.
