Guys,

Google this to confirm, but below is a PR release for what looks like one VERY sweet little machine from Asus. I think I've FINALLY found a commercial, off the shelf device worthy of both Blue Ray Playback and use as my streaming front end..

What do ya think?

Official Release from site is at this link:
http://www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=10836

ASUS today announced a mini desktop PC that's only 7.8 x 11.4 x 3.15 inches in size and 7.5 pounds in weight. It features Intel Core 2 Dual, MXM MN8600M GT 256M graphics, Blu-Ray DVD and 7.1 sound. Here is more info on this computer:

"Packed with innovations, the ASUS Essentio CS5110 is a Mini PC that features exceptional graphics performance as its main focus - and is the world's smallest Desktop PC equipped with a fully embedded discrete graphic card to give you high definition movie pleasure and smooth gaming fun.

Mighty Fluency - 1080P High Definition Pleasure
Playing HD movies easily and smoothly, the CS5110's superior graphic quality and HDMI display output allows for entertainment enjoyment in high definition. Through the HDMI-equipped TV or monitor, the digital video and digital audio can be transferred seamlessly.

Mighty Sound - High Quality Audio
The CS5110 supports S/PIDF-output and is equipped with 7.1 Sound output. By connecting to the user's 7.1 speakers or audio devices, it can deliver an experience of vivid surround-sound for movies and games.

Mighty Quiet - Low-noise Computing Experience
Through the world's first 2-in-1 thermal module that insulates heat from the cooling fan, the CS5110 has the fastest, most quiet and reliable heat dissipation system. The operation noise level is only at 23.9dB at idle mode, quieter than most other computer systems in the market to provide you with a very comfortable computing environment.

Mighty Versatile - 802.11n & Bluetooth 2.0 Connections
The CS5110 supports 802.11n wireless standard with transmission rates of 300Mbps - 6 times faster in speed and 8 times larger in coverage than the 802.11g standard. Its built-in Bluetooth also supports multi-linkage with Bluetooth devices, such as laptops, handheld devices (mobile phones, PDA, etc.), and head/ear phones.

SPLENDID Video Intelligence Technology
This technology optimizes the video performance with intelligent color, brightness, contrast and sharpness correction. It also provides video preset mode selections (via the hotkey) and 3 skin-tones to choose from based on the user's preference. It produces vivid and vibrant colors by enhancing real-time depth and color intensity. With its advanced Area Pixel Processing Algorithm constantly evaluating and adjusting every pixel in every frame, the end result is a dynamically-optimized image with deep and strong colors that are very natural to the human eye. When the visual is dark, for instance night scenes, this technology is programmed to adjust the brightness output of each detail and create a well-balanced contrast so that rainy days will not just look like a total blur on the screen.

Mighty Stylish - Gloss Satin Finish
The outer case of the ASUS Essentio CS 5110 Mini Desktop PC is made by applying high quality double injection techniques, similar to that of famous Italian designer furniture for a luxurious feel. Then the double-injected molding is polished to create the crystal-like glossy dark look to give it that beautiful satin finish.

Very neat and very impressive. I wonder how much they're going to be charging for it though. I love new products and all, but I'm still willing to bet that I'll be able to build something better and cheaper...
does it provide the LPCM lossless through hdmi?
It's a G35 chipset with 8600GT video. I doubt it can do any lossless LPCM
post #5 of 22
Would love something like this one day under 2 conditions:

1) Supported lossless audio formats (which looks like it doesn't, but I'm sure within the next year something will)

2) Cost like $500 I'm guessing its 2-4x that unfortunately

Actually, it is somewhat a hybrid, uses desktop chipset and CPU (cheaper than mobile) and mobile graphics and optical drive.

The G35 can only do LPCM if you use the onboard HDMI connector I think. Since this is using a 8600GT with HDMI it will not do LPCM.

I wonder what its using for bluray playback. I doubt Asus would invest in their own player...

No News ?

I have been searching hi and low for info on this computer and no such luck. A few stores in of all places, Australia have it but that's it. I called Asus corp in California three times and left messages, never got a call back.

shame, looks like a contender. Might have to go with the base HP Slimline and upgrade it
post #15 of 22
So far, the good news is that not much is showing up in the Support Forum:

yeah because only two people in Australia have them

Bump. Any additonal news on this? I saw a CS5111 at Best Buy today and upon further research discovered the CS5110 model (one discussed above).

I really would be interested in picking one of these up to break into BR even if there isn't any loss-less. Especially since so many other quality stand-alone players are going for good prices. Likely to be even less with holiday deals coming.

CS5111 looks good but too bad you cant get blu ray. Its also slot loaded so no swapping in another one

How so? There are slot loading BR drives already out there. Exactly what will be going in the larger model in fact!

In fact, I'm wondering if it's not worth it to pick up the CS5111 for now, and then upgrade it later. It has expansion slots, so I imagine it wouldn't be a problem to drop in a 8600 later and a BR drive.

Besides, it sounds like the GX3500 can handle HD/BR pretty well actually.

The G35 will be based on Intel's next-generation X3500 Graphics Media Accelerator. Full DX10 support is claimed, including support for Shader Model 4.0. For backwards compatibility X3500 also will support Shader Model 3.0 and Hardware Transform and Lighting (T&L). High Resolution DVD playback is also featured, with support for both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray playback. X3500 also is said to support HDMI and DVI. MPEG2 and VC1 1080i/p are also supported by the Intel Clear Video feature of X3500. Like the other series 3 chipsets, all current Intel processors are reported as well as future Penryn 45nm processors.

Has anyone looked into upgrading the CPU in one of these? I bought the CS5111 a few days ago. I am testing playing some 1080p .ts files via XBMC. It does an ok job, but I am dropping some frames on some of the intense scenes in the movies I tested. From what I have read about XBMC, it only uses the CPU for decoding and does not make use of the GPU. So the answer to my problems is a faster CPU.

So...

Has anyone cracked one of these open? Will the motherboard inside support an Intel Core2 Duo CPU? I would like to add an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400.
No idea. I started to look into the BB model more a few weeks ago, but was dissuaded by reported problems. Most seemed to revolve around overheating. If you were to drop a faster chip in there I feel like this would only add to that problem.

Now I really don't know what to buy since Apple didn't release a new Mini today.

I'm still pretty damn happy with my Acer x1200
