How to install a Monoprice projector support - step by step video

Hi, everyone.

When I needed info about this support last year, I gained all the knowledge I needed from these forums. This is my way of giving something back to the community:

Feel free to add comments and corrections.

2008-04-18 Update:

Thanks to everyone who have watched the video. I think I should point out that the original instructions came from Dustin's Blog. Dustin is also an avsforum member (can't remember his nick), and the link for these instructions was featured in his signature.

I've prepared a couple of images for those confused about this mount:

And more details about the mount: In the Monoprice site, it is called "Ceiling Bracket for Projector", item #3009. Actually, it is the same model as the Bentley UPM-01 Universal Projector Mount and the PRB-1 found elsewhere. You can also get it in black or white color besides the classic silver one.

The mount is only provided with two tubes: an 8cm one and a 17cm one. You have to decide which one better fits your installation. If you need a longer tube, do a search in the Monoprice site.

I forgot to say that the 5mm Allen key is for adjusting a bolt in the projector plate that determines how easy or how hard it is to tilt the projector once installed.

And yes, there are much better and more flexible mounts out there. This one is somewhat limited by the fact that you can only tilt your projector up to 15ยบ in each direction. But tilting your projector more than that would mean that it does not have lens shift and you must use digital keystoning.

More info about this mount available in the AVS Forum:

For mounting a Mitsubishi HC4900 / HC5000 / HC6000, check this thread for further advice. Thanks Turbe! - added on 2008-04-18

A little advice from other users: Do not touch any button once you have mounted it. Check this thread and please use use your remote instead of the buttons on the projector. - added on 2008-04-21

Or you could tighten the center bolt of the projector plate if you want to avoid accidentally misaligning it. Read a tip by nyjimbo here. - added on 2008-04-21

Regrettably, they do not provide a step-by-step guide, like the ones you find when you buy a new projector.

Ceiling mounting has been a great help for me... I used to spend 15 minutes (or more) arranging the living room before watching a movie; now I can do it anytime. If you are concerned that the projector might look ugly hanging from the ceiling... after a couple of weeks you'll stop noticing it.

Does anyone know if this mount will work with the epson 720

thanks
It's a universal mount so yes.
Very nicely done Ecuadorian!
you can make it work with a 720 but its not ideal. I bought one and decided I wasn't comfortable using it so I bought one from Mount direct, which was still pretty cheap and better quaility.

Used a Monoprice projector mount on my *cough*X1*cough* that I recently pulled out of storage. Works as well as any universal projector mount I've used in my day job as tech support for a K-14 education district, and at literally 11% of the cost.

NIcely done, but I have a question. Do they really expect you to rely on plastic expansion anchors in sheetrock to hold that weight? I can just see that coming out.

Those are "concrete anchors" according to the documentation. They don't recommend installing it in sheet rock at all without a joist to sink the screw into.

Thanks for the clarification. I could just see someone doing that and wondering why their projector was on the floor.

For anyone interested in using the Monoprice Mount with Mitsubishi's HC4900 / HC5000 / HC6000 Projectors which have challenges with many Ceiling Mounts, you can check out my post in the Thread below (you need to read from that Post to the end of the Thread):

Do you have to use the tube extension or can you go from the ceiling mount directly to the projector. I like the mount and am considering it but would prefer no more than a 10cm drop from ceiling mount to the projector.

You need to use the tube, the bolts on the ceiling plate need something to connect to, as do the projector plate.

The small tube (1 of 2 included) is approx 3" I think...

Hi, I measured the drop with a power tape and from the ceiling to the projector there are about 22-23cm using the longer (17cm) tube. With the shorter tube (8cm) the distance should be 13-14cm, as it is 9cm shorter.

Thanks. Oh great, I tried to get the white or the black one and Monoprice is sold out of both.

I am confused as to where you put the lock washer. I just installed this mount this weekend and the sway is annoying. I am about to rig something to brace the projector, but I am looking at any method to fix this.

I guess the plastic washer should be placed before the bolt that accepts the 5mm Allen key, in the projector plate. It's the only bolt in this mount that accepts this key. You need to hold the hexagonal nut in place with an open-end wrench while you take the bolt out and replace it. Let us know how it turned out, I haven't tried this myself, I simply avoid touching the projector.

I got the PRB-2 due to the extra weight limit (the planar 7130 weighs 20Lbs)

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

It came with the same concrete anchors, but i have drywall.

What are my options ? The ceiling mount is too narrow to span joists.

Can i just use the lag bolts directly to the drywall ? That seems like a disaster waiting to happen

A toggle (molly) bolt may work...?

+1 Toggle bolts into 1/2" to 3/4" drywall will hold your 20 pound projector easily. You would have to do chin-ups off your projector to bring the toggle bolts out of the ceiling.
