Should I buy the Onkyo now or wait until the Harman Kardon 254 comes out this summer?

Thanks.

Do you want to wait untill summer for a new avr? The 705 is a plenty solid AVR.

Have Fun!

I'm kinda leaning towards the HK, but I have read that there were quite a few issues with the HK 247. I guess I'm hoping someone will nudge me in the right direction.

Now I've been reading a lot about the Onkyo having lip-sync problems!!
Can any company put out a product that works and doesn't need a patch or a firmware update!

Exactly! That's what I am wondering. I'm interested in the integra 7.8, or the Pioneer 94 or the Denon 3808ci/2808. But I have no idea what direction to go in.

I ordered the 705 three weeks ago from Amazon and am quite impressed with it. Also, the price has dropped over $60 since I ordered--which amazon is refunding--so I feel even more pleased.

How are the lip-sync issues on your unit? Have you updated the firmware? If so, is that an easy process?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Firmware updates are available for the 875 and up, and for the Integras. This update cured the lip-synch issues and lock on delays.
The DSP update is available for all models which took care of the DTS MA "bomb" issue.
805 and under models firmware updates are still unavailable, last I read.

My 705 is humming like crazy. Apparently it doesn't like audio and video over HDMI

Do a search on the official 705 thread for hum. Very disappointing.

No one really answered the original question . . . which is better, Onkyo 705 or HK 254. The Onkyo is 100w/ch, and the HK is 50w/ch, but I think the HK is rated with all channels driven. So which is likely to be more powerful really? And which company typically makes better receivers? Is there any reason for me to get one or the other? Or something else entirely for the same pricerange? (I don't know much about receivers) I can currently get the HK for four hunder dollars or the Onkyo for four hundred sixty dollars.

Why don't you audition both and see for yourself? Ultimately, it's going to be you who has to live with the receiver.

just read through their respective threads and get an idea of the problems each of them has.

If the problems one of them has will be less of an issue then the problems of the other, then get that one. If they both have issues that you really don't want to deal with then don't get either one and just wait until the issues have been resolved (if ever) or buy a different AVR entirely...

I currently have the TX-SR605, and I'm moving to the HK 254. I had an HK 325 before, and wanted to upgrade to a receiver with HDMI and advanced codecs. While I liked the Onkyo, I always thouth my older HK just sounded better. Subjective, I know, but that was my gut reaction, the HK sounded better. So, I'm selling the Onkyo. Just my .02, hope it helps

Boy some one resurrected this thread.. Started in April..... Maybe the data lost, and most of this thread got axed as well. I have both the 254 and 705, just like any of the new AVRs they "ALL" have some type of issue, it depends if you can live with the small quirks they all have! I like the sound of the HK over the Onkyo, the 705 is used in my upstairs system and so far it has done well, but the HK unit in my main HT right now but is temporary till I decide on some of the newer AVRs, that hopefully don't have as many quirks..

Thank for the idea, but I would have to find some store that had them both with the same speakers to see if I could really tell if one is more powerful. I just wanted to buy a HTIB a couple months ago, then I got stuck on this site. Now I've bought speakers, and I need to get a receiver and sub. I was just hoping that there was a general consensus that one brand or model of receiver was a "better one" in this price range.

I've been doing that, thanks. In fact, I've spent hours and days and now weeks doing that. I'm tired and just looking for someone to hold up the golden chalice and say "This is the best you're going to get in your price range."

Thanks. Are you able to tell which one is more powerful?

Newer AVRs? Like the Onkyo 706? I was kinda thinking that these slightly older ones would be better because the bugs have been worked out in the firmware upgrades. Is that a wrong assumption?

Thanks, that helps because I was also considering the 605 or 606.

Well, if you read anything on here there will always be bugs on anything. n Meaning they should have just a thread to report bugs, I see more problem or bug threads on here all the time. The 706 I haven't heard of any issues, right now my 705 and 254 are pretty good, I would give the nudge to the 254 because of better sound and menu system, but that is me.... HK is always known for under rating there products, meaning they produce more than what there specs say via the WPC....
