Thanks for the input, I might take a look at the tv's in-store this weekend. I dunno, I'm a sucker for glossy screens but $1000 more for the 650 Series is a lot. I'm using the tv for PS3/Xbox 360 only. There have been reports here of the 650 not playing games well unless "Game mode" was enabled.

Once you have the TV in your living room, you get used to it very quickly. I find that every now and then, while playing my 360 (GTA4 FTW), I just stop for a second and just take the screen in. It's amazing just *HOW* large a 46 inch screen really is. And when your gameplay is as crisp and clean as looking out a window, it's also easy to take for granted just how high the quality of this screen really is.

The short version: A530 pwns for gameplay

I also have a G1 Xbox connected but I haven't tried it out yet. Anyone? (G1 Xbox was Composite only.)

Was just purusing Best Buy's site...noticed that the price of the 46A530 has shot back up to $2099 WITHOUT a receiver. (Mine was $1999 INCLLUDING a 600w 7.1 Yamaha receiver, 5 speakers, and a sub (HTIB)).

Sooooo, SCORE
Fortunately the price in the US has not changed yet!... I can't buy the TV for two months so hopefully the US does not follow suit.

If you buy in-store is it delivered that day?
Does anyone know if the bases on the A550 and the A530 are interchangeable?

Depends on the store and the day. I bought mine at 9:30 PM Wed, and they told me they could have it at my nouse by Thurs morning by 10 if I was available...which I wasn't. It got delivered right on time on the following Saturday, which was great, because it gave me the time to set up the rest of the components and go somewhere ELSE to buy the HDMI/Toslink cables. ($70 for 6' of HDMI cable? Suck it, Big Box ;P)
Alright I'll take a look in-store tomorrow hopefully. I prefer the design of the 550 but my local stores only have 530s

Oh well, as long as it's the same panel which it is. I'm tired of playing PS3 in 480i. lol.

Just got this TV and am loving it. Would love to get it calibrated a little better and am trying to go off of the settings from TheBeginning. But i am not able to access many of the features, such as sharpness, DNIe, and many others. i tried adjusting them in dynamic, standard, and movies, and it wasnt available in any of these. any idea on how to access this stuff? just cant find it for the life of me.

thanks!

Hey guys,

I just picked up the lN46A530 a few days ago (Loving it btw!). I've got a question though... this is my first LCD TV and I know the black lighting is never 100% even, but... when I watch something that has an all black background I get a noticeable dark middle screen with lightened left and right sides (They look almost grey!). I adjusted the backlighting/contrast etc but I still get an uneven picture.

Is this normal, or should I return it and try my luck with another one?

The TV is a pain to return since I have a small car lol so try and give me any bad news lightly! :P

Thanks in advance!
Jay

No, you can use component on the Xbox Classic. It's the only way to get 720p from the HD games. Hulk Ultimate Destruction in HD rocked the house last gen.

That's only true for a VERY small group of games. Most of what you would play is going to be 100% fine.

Are you in entertainment mode? Go in the setup to disable it.

You should return it and try your luck with another set.

beauv,

I turned down the back light (From 8) to 3 and turned the contrast up to 93. It helped alot, i can only notice the uneveness if I look for it.

If you, or anyone has a second... can you play a movie with all black picture (Star wars for example) and put the backlight to 8 and see if you get the uneven backlight. I don't want to have to return it if it is somewhat normal.

Thanks again!
Jay

P.S. I tried the picture settings from the 1499/1500 thread and they didn't look 'right' to me. That is why my backlight was at 8... I'll keep on trying.

no, i am not in entertainment mode. that is turned off. the mode's i have available are dynamic, standard and movie. and regardless of what i have it set on i cannot access the DNIe function, etc. its pretty frustrating.
isu1648,

I think you can only access the DNLe function in certain modes (IE Movie). It might also depend on the connection you're using, such as HDMI.

I find when using HDMI for BLu-Ray the DNLe isn't always an option in the modes.

If you can't select the DNLe in either Movie, Dynamic or Normal let me know and I'll figuire it out on mine for you. (Let me know the mode(s) you're using and the source...)

Cheers,
Jay

Hello all. I'm very interested in this 40" set and I was just wondering if any of you who own one have owned the same size a550 as well? Specifically, how do they compare? I really like the look of this 530 set. From the pics in this thread it looks like the screen and frame are almost flat. I had a 40a550 for about a week but returned it due to poor sound quality, popping sounds, and other aestethics. If the sound is improved by side speakers, I really think this set could be a bargain! Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi...I've been doing a lot of research on here to find a new tv, and had it narrowed down to a couple options. The Samsung LN46A530 is one of them that I liked in the stores, although I am still undecided between that one and a panasonic plasma in a similar size. While checking BB's site last night, I now see another new model...a LN46A580, which I couldn't see on Samsung's site. Anyone know any info on it, or have any thoughts? I'm not in a big rush to make a decision, so wanted to explore all options. Thanks for your help!!

In the menu, try labeling your HDMI input differently. (Mine is set to "AV receiver" and I can access all the settings) But remember, DNIe function is not available on all modes. For example its not available in movie mode. Try to label your HDMI differently and see if it helps. Good luck!

hey all im a newbie here also from boston ma, and i cant decide between the newer models 46a530,550,580 or to go with the led 4681, granted the tv will only be used for ps3 games and movies, the 81 seems to have a few kinks with the motion plus, firmware updates, and too many menu options, the a530's 550,and 580's are not led but have been upgraded to 5ms response, the bottom line is which is better for cod4 resistancefom, and most fps games, any kind of input would help, the 81's have dropped almost a grand in price, i work near a bbuy and almost everyday im there during lunch checking out the differences which doesnt seem to be that much from the naked eye,at least to me anyway,

the tv i get will be in the basement, so there is no ambient light, and i can make it fairly dark, also my viewing distance will be about 7 ft to the screen, so maybe a 40 inch is better ?? but i want the 46.

thanks
jim

i also dont see what the difference is with the a530 and a580 except the 580 has a higher dyn contrast ratio of 35000-1 and a usb connector.

i have gone through all 7 pages in this thread and i saw all the ?? about the a530 having a 30k or 20k ratio, what is the actual ratio??

thanks

jim

....My LN52A530 says it has 20k ratio but people on here said it was a typo and Samsung says it's actually 30k. Stickers on my box and on tv itself claim 20k.

Only other thing about the USB on the 530 is that its for upgrading firmware only, no pictures or video access like on other models. For me this is a non-issue.

The tv is perfect and I just love it!

Ya, take what Best Buy posts with a grain of salt...according to them, the 530 has down-shooting speakers too:

Further proof that it pays to do your research before buying

Really? My stickers and box both read 30k, as well as the user manual.

I saw Samsung 40A530 in BestBuy store today. They had two of them on display.
The colors of 40A530 had a “yellow push” when I compared to other TVs on the floor (Samsung 40A650, Sony 46V3000, Sony 40XBR4, Sony 40D3000). The colors were pretty good but more into the yellow: when flowers were orange on all other TVs they were yellow on Samsung A530, the faces looked yellowish too.

Does anyone else see this problem?
Does anyone calibrated out this effect?

I picked one up (46") from Best Buy at the weekend and both the box and the sticker on the tv said 20k.

I'm really not bothered - the tv looks nice with SD and HD content. It's also easier to view that my CRT was. The CRT reflected everything from the nearby window. The matt screen on the A530 makes a big difference.

I'm picking up my Blu-Ray tonight and I'll get my HDMI cables installed (using component right now). I'll report back with more feedback in a few days.

BTW...The Closed Caption (CC) subtitles don't work - I just get a "Not Available" message on the TV. I can switch them on using the cable box, but that involves a bunch of menus rather than a single button push. My CRT used to be able to show CC. Any ideas?
