I could really use some help here..

I currently have a P3 1.3 Ghz laptop with 1Gb of RAM and 380Gb harddrive.

I want to make this a streaming media server to connect to the following clients:

PS3 (connected via hdmi with optical audio)
Xbox 360 (connected via VGA with optical audio)
Series 2 Tivo

I have Windows XP SP2 that came with the laptop, and have been somewhat successful using Nero Media Home and Tivo Desktop to stream media from my main computer, but thought i would take this opportunity to do things properly.

Would some form of *Nix be a better way to go here, or should i stick with XP?

If i go with XP, i already have the tools needed (Nero home, tivo desktop plus, directmediadump to convert the Tivo files to mpeg).

If i go with Linux, which flavor, and what tools would i use? ( I tried Linxmce, but it was not what i needed, and i couldn't get Galleon to work on it for the .tivo transfers due to a compile error).

What else would i need for a Linux box?

This will basically just sit on the network and stream to one of the Tivo's or the 360/ps3, and would not be directly connected to any home theater components.

Any direction/advice would be appreciated.
