I'm enjoying mine. Can't wait to get home to try a few more. Tried I, Robot "You are experiencing a crash" - oh my what fun. Glass everywhere and plenty of LFE. Fuller sound and plenty of details. Definitely worth it.

So do I need to change my PS3 to output as Bitstream or leave it at PCM? Thanks.

I think between me and you, we've prooved that there is no problem with New Line DTS MA 7.1 tracks and anyone with issues has something setup improperly and/or it's a receiver issue or something of that nature.

PCM. Bitstream will not allow you to hear DTS MA as the PS3 cannot bitstream it with it's early-version of the HDMI 1.3a chipset.

So your receiver won't light up "DTS HD Master" or anything like that. It will say something like "PCM Multichannel" though it is, in fact, DTS HD Master if you hit "Display" on the PS3 remote and it says it's playing DTS HD MA.

I have my PS3 LPCMing Pans Labrynth to my Onkyo805.
PS3 display says DTS HD-MA 7.1, but my Onkyo805 display's 5.1 pcm only, the EX channels have no sound.
Saw 4 and XMEN3 both display on my Onkyo805 is correctly 7.1. What is going on?

Is there any reason why some blurays include both LPCM and TrueHD tracks if they are identical?

Maybe they are encoded with different bit resolution? Doesn't Spiderman 3 have a 24 bit TrueHD track, and a lower (16 bit?) uncompressed LPCM track? So, the TrueHD track, while a lower bit rate since it is (losslessly) compressed, actually would (could) sound fuller than the LPCM track?

Hello, PLEASE HELP! I have updated to 2.3 but am NOT enjoying the DTS-MA experience. Here's why:

I have a PS3 connected via HDMI to a Sony STRDG810 receiver. Up until now, I have been able to get 5.1 channel PCM sound, DD+ 5.1 sound, DTS 5.1 sound, etc. (i have a 5.1 speaker setup).

But of course not DTS-MA, because until update 2.3 the PS3 didn't support it. When i'd play a DTS-MA track, i'd get the "core" DTS sound at 1.5 mbps.

ANYWAY, today i downloaded the 2.3 update from the Sony website to a USB memory stick, and uploaded it to my PS3. All went smoothly, and at the end of the process i checked my "system settings", which indeed showed that i now have 2.3.

BUT, here's the problem: I've tried a number of discs that have DTS-MA, and while the PS3 DISPLAY says i'm getting Lossless sound (between 3.5 and 5.0 mbps), i am only GETTING SOUND out of 3 speakers, the two front speakers, and the sub.

I am getting NO SOUND AT ALL from the center speaker or the left and right surround speakers.

What's worse, this doesn't just apply when i try to listen to a DTS-MA track. The SAME thing is happening when i try to listen to a DD 5.1 or regular DTS 5.1 track as well: No sound coming out of the center or two back surround speakers.

In all cases, the indicator lights on the front of the receiver show only the two front speakers and sub "lit up", indicating that they are in use.

The problem is NOT with the receiver per se, because i also have an HD-DVD player connected to it via HDMI and i've tried a number of HD-DVD discs and am getting the usual 5.1 sound out of them. My receiver test-tone also outputs sound thru all 6 speakers.

Pardon my french, but WHAT THE %@&!& is going on with my PS3?

Am i so frustrated that i am missing something obvious, like a PS3 setting?

Any help would be appreciated ...

I rented a 7.1 track DTS HD MA movie to test it out (SAW IV). I have an Onkyo 875 and a PS3 40Gb with the latest firmware (2.30). I played the movie just before the the update and could only get 5.1 channels. After the update, 7.1 (shown on the PS3 info page and on the front panel of the Onkyo) with a greater transfer rate (have seen 7.6 Mbps so far) and the sound excellent.

Yes. Onkyo 705. I just got mine two weeks ago and I'm LOVING IT! It's simply amazing! I bought their 540 model 7.1 speaker setup, too, but I'm not using the Onkyo subwoofer but rather an Infinity one I've got that's better.

Me, too. Unfortunately, I suspect that we are going to see the "Bitstream vs. LPCM" argument taken to a whole new level. Eventually, I expect a moderator crackdown like the one that reigned in the format "wars."

To answer the original question: the first two discs I put on were "Chronos" and "Nature's Journey" both of which were produced and released by R&B Films which maintains an active (and helpful) presence here at AVS.

The soundtracks were, as I hoped, magnificent in DTS-MA.

How many HDMI inputs are on the Onk 705? is it HDMI 1.3a? how does it compare to the onkyo 805 and 875? Are there any lip sync issues?

Where do you see the transfer rate?

Hit the triangle on the PS3 controller or PS3 Blu-ray remote to toggle on/off the display for time, audio format, etc.

With the PS3, hit the green triangle to get the on screen menu and then hit the icon with the letter i in it (far right side).

I don't know if this is whats going on but I would check the audio settings in the system setup on your PS3. Make sure you select all of the correct outputs and such that you wish to use. It sounds like yours has defaulted to 2.1 output.

Check under the BD Output (set HDMI to PCM) and then go to Sound Settings to configure the HDMI is set to for all 2 channel, 5.1 channel and 7.1 (if your receiver/room is configured for it) PCM settings. Then save these settings.

I cant believe how much 'squishier' Pan's Labyrinth sounds. There was a lot of detail missing. You can actually tell which sound effects were made using leather.

Now I'm going to crank the volume and check out 28 Weeks Later.
OMG. You can actually hear blood spray when he get the zombie in the head with the crowbar.
The mids sound so clean on this one.

Whoa the bass during the jet fly over and during the firebombing used to destroy my sub. It was boomy. Not it's tight and the room just shakes.

Thank you for pointing that out. Whenever people say TrueHD == PCM, I think "yes they are right". The data and specs prove it. But then I watch Fifth Element and have my wife switch b/w PCM and TrueHD with my eyes closed and I can easily pick out which is which. She can too. So thank you, now I can agree with the TrueHD == DTS-MA == PCM folks and still know that is not the case with some films like Fifth Element.

I also have a DG810, but haven't installed yet.

I will be home in about 4 hours and can do some testing to see if I get the same result (god forbid).

Check the output setting on the PS3 like the 2 others recommended, and I will post an update later.

all new line tracks only come in at 5.1 on my Onkyo805. Even though the PS3 displays 7.1
post #57 of 209
Did the 2.3 download, had my PS3 set to bitstream, I called Sony and they said to leave it on Bitstream, but people in here are using PCM. I have the Onkyo 605, what should I set it to, Bitstream or PCM

Use Linear Pulse Code Modulation as opposed to Multistage PCM since MPCM is not available on the PS3.
