Panasonic pz85u break in settings:

For those new pz85u owners wondering about calibrating the display for the 100-hour break in period and will just watch regular tv and movies, I have been using these settings. They are confirmed to be good settings for break in:

Cinema mode
Picture: 50
Brightness: 52
Color: 41
Tint: -2
Sharpness: 50
Color Temp: Warm
Black Level: Light
Also, fill the screen with the picture using the format button (to avoid black bars) and try not to display static images for a long time (channel logos, news tickers, etc.)

Just for the record, with these settings the picture looks fantastic. You may hear the words "break in period" and think that the picture will have to be crappy (like I did) but these settings produce a great picture and I'll probably end up keeping them beyond the break in period. Also, it's worth it. This display is incredible. Hope this helps!

That should produce a very good pic, only thing I've really changed is increasing the Picture.

That is just about what I'm running. How important is the black level to light? To my eye the dark looks much better. Should I wait on that?

Dark will look better, but its crushing black a bit.

Np, the dvd is sooo helpful for breaking in- I'd recommend everyone use it. After about 130 hours of using it, playing games for hours straight leaves no IR or Burn-in.

I stilll keep an eye out for IR, but haven't seen any yet and I am over 300 hours easily now.

1+

They both use the same pannel. However the glass is a different P/N#; some other things like firmware and possible factory-only settings may be different as well. That's why I'd like to hear the pros on how the PZ80s calibrates compared to the much more popular 85s...

If anyone with a 80 and DVE bluray would chime in itd be close. My DVE blu ray was pretty close to Toms settings.

Forgive my ignorance, but could you define "crushing black"?
Question, all my blu-rays and TV had faces that were way too red. I changed my color temp from Warm to Normal and it looks a ton better. Everyone else is using warm, is there something I am missing by going to normal or should I just be happy I have the reds somewhat under control?

Its basically the same as if you cut brightness down too low to get more black, you lose detail. Say, areas/details of a dark suit/jacket in hd programming would be lost if you crush black. Find a good hd program with a darker scene and pause it, then try swapping back and forth. Im not completely sure but it seemed that it did to me.

Some people just dont like warm, nothing wrong with it. It took me awhile to finally settle on warm. I bounced back and forth but have stuck with it for a week now and dont really notice.

I have the 4280 and would gladly purchase the DVE. Where can I get it and can I use it with an old sd sony dvd player?

My 50PZ85U settings after about 150 hours:

Cinema mode
Picture: 68
Brightness: 51
Color: 35
Tint: -3
Sharpness: 42
Color Temp: Warm
Black Level: Light

Ive seen a few of these lower color numbers. Is that from a calib disc or eye?

My eye.

I'm a graphic designer and look at images all day so I think I can judge color pretty good. I messed around a lot with the settings and this looks the best on my set so far. I'm always messing around so maybe the settings will change next week.

I haven't shared my numbers yet because I really haven't settled on anything, but I think may be happening with the Color numbers is folks are trying to adjust out the over saturated red. Most of the other settings are pretty close between users, but the Color is varying greatly (well, that and sharpness!). Using DVE, the reds are just too in your face for me. I really wish we could get an update to tame the red. I've found, for the most part, if I keep the Color under 40, say 37-38, the skin tones don't look too red. DVE is telling me 43-44 using the blue filter.

Also, since very few have chimed in with actual pro-calibration numbers, what we are seeing is subjective, even with something like DVE.
Yepp, Im using 44.I really think a 38-44 color range is not that big. We've definitely found a pretty good sweet spot of settings for this tv and if someone does not like it with the numbers here, they wont.

Elway, I'm using your settings in my new 50 PZ85u and they just look amazing. (the very last one you post a day or two ago) Thank you for sharing. Tried Tom's also but I stuck with yours . I'm not doing the break in or something because Panasonic's tech support told me I didn't need to. TV is only 40 hours as of today. I won't play any games on it though, until maybe the 120 hrs, just in case.

Elway, in your sat receiver settings, do you use 720p or 1080i ?

Thanks again.

Pic 85 (this is just a preference, dont go over 90 IMHO regardless)
Bright 52
Color 44
Tint +3 (I had to go positive with the color filters to get red more in control)
Sharp 50(I see edging around 75 to 80)

You talking about these? I'd say Tom's are a little different because he's calibrated his, but these do produce a damn good PQ. I finally settled on Warm after bouncing between it and Normal. Ive also dropped Pic back to 80 because 85 was giving me eye strain on real white screens, but thats a personal preference.

I would not sweat break in too much, just watch the tickers and letterbox stuff for a bit.

Ive found that the PQ on this tv looks better with a 1080i signal, and thats even with an OTA 720p signal. Its strange to me that having a dvr take a OTA 720p signal to 1080i then giving it to the tv to produce a better picture than straight 720p to the tv.

I read where some of the older Panny's did not like 720p signals, so maybe thats the case. I leave my dvr on 1080i now full time, even on SD.

Elway-can you please repost what he's talking about? I find Tom's settings way too dark for almost any environment. There was a post on page 3 of this thread where the guy had the picture setting at 100 and I tried that and it was pretty good.

Duh oh, sorry. Can't wait to get home this afternoon to try it. I'm guessing 85 is ok for picture; I'm at about 115 hours and ran the first 72 hours straight on the break-in dvd.

You're fine at 85 with those hours. Using the DVE Bluray test pattern for contrast, I'd recommend not going over 92 or 93 because it will effect PQ.
Has anyone tried using Custom? It seems to be a bit brighter than Cinema, and I adjusted it so it looked quite good.

But after reading a lot of other users' posts, I've gone back to Cinema, with the following settings:

Cinema mode
Picture: 65
Brightness: 50
Color: 30
Tint: -4
Sharpness: 50
Color Temp: Warm
Black Level: Light

Panasonic wrote back to tell me that their Canadian sets are indeed already run for 100h at the factory. And that they recommend leaving Brightness at 50 and Picture at 70-80.
Thanks, Elway. Yep, those are the ones. I wont touch them or mess around with settings no more. They are the ones for me, let's call them, 'Elway is da way'.

Thanks about the 720p/1080i comment. 1080i is what I do use also.
It is brighter, but noisier IMHO. "Custom" mode that is.

Yes I have my Comcast DVR set to 1080i the 720p signal didn't look all that great.
