I do have a 50PZ80, looking at breaking it in properly. I've never done it before so I'm not sure where to start exactly... Just picked it up on Saturday and have been watching tv, but I'm wondering if I should run that cd mentioned earlier in the thread?

Hmmmm..

I will have to check out 1080i on my Comcast box. I had it set to 720P for my old LCD, and it looked great, but I have been noticing that the HD feed is somewhat softer on this set.

I do notice that some shows like LOST look incredible (ABC) but Desperate Housewives (MY WIFE, NOT ME!) looks really bad. I tried 2 different ABC HD channels and they both looked soft. However, the commercials sometimes would look great! I think it just may be a lot of crappy HD production work, OR the show is just produced in a format that favors 1080i.

I really want to get Desperate Housewives looking better.....for my wife.....she is a big Eva Longoria fan....yeah, that's the ticket!

Ive also noticed some shows just look better. On CBS, Moonlight and CSI Miami own NCIS.

I just ran an initial calibration on my 42PZ85U (arrived today) and my brightness ended up at 25. That was based on DVE (DVD version, not Hi-def) running out of my Denon 2200.

Just thought I should point out that your settings may vary rather widely from the "recommended" levels in this thread - if your blacks look gray, turn down the brightness some more!

(My setting is based on Cinema/Warm/Contrast=60/Black levels = Light)

i thought the 720p looks pretty good, i just got annoyed when switching from 1080i stations with the delay with the tv changing resolutions...

Hey guys, long time reader and first time poster here.

First I'd like to thank the peope in this thread to convince me to return my multiple cloudy 40" XBR4's in favor of this great plasma. I can definitely see how much better plasma looks in almost every setting in regards to movement and "natural" look.

Secondly I was wondering if anyone could recommend any sound settings for this TV with regards to bass, treble, and the advanced settings. I don't really have a Surround System as of yet and even when I purchase one I will likely want the best sound output from this television.

Also I was wondering what the big complaint was in regards to standard mode. Is there a significant loss of detail or something? I haven't played with it much because I am still breaking the TV in but didn't know if this mode resulted in detail loss or what.

Thanks for any feedback.
Hard to describe the non cinema modes. To me they are like comparing a compressed noisy hd image to a cleaner one. Something about cinema allows for a better image, but its not as bright.

I still have mine set at what I posted previously, but I am going to try these tonight Elway:

Pic 85 (this is just a preference, dont go over 90 IMHO regardless)
Bright 52
Color 44
Tint +3 (I had to go positive with the color filters to get red more in control)
Sharp 50(I see edging around 75 to 80)

with Warm.. see how it goes

@ over 300 hours now I imagine

Give it a few days and see what you think.

The reason I used the dvd that I linked is because I wanted to get past the 100-200 hour break-in period as fast as possible.

I essentially flew through the first 150 hours because of that DVD and have watched tv/played games to get it past 300 now.

If you want to watch your TV, just run the DVD while you are at work or something just make sure it fills the entire screen!

Did anyone actually leave their display on while they went to work? Or slept at night? I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving a television on for 8 hours while I'm not there to monitor it every so often. I'm not using any break in DVD (just regular tv/movies). Sometimes during a movie I'll leave it on while I go eat or write my memoirs (?).

Is there any reason I should be noticing a slight difference in the details of a picture between this and the XBR4 I returned? I'm not sure if it's due to the bigger screen size or processing or what but when watching the Yankees game last night on YES I didn't feel as though the picture was as detailed. Maybe LCD's are better at showing detail to make up for their poor motion handling?

Any insight on this would be appreciated.

Lots of people do this and also leave it overnight, but I just watched tv using size 1 and zoomed in and made sure the picture was always covering 100% of the screen.

Also make sure the DVD player is set to loop/repeat the dvd.

I didn't check mine, lucky I was only out walking the dog, but when I got back in, the Pioneer symbol was showing on the display. I quickly switched to full screen HD TV and it fixed the IR.

Sorry guys, but these questions really do not belong in a thread titled Panasonic PZ80/PZ85 Calibration Thread. There are other threads for that, ya know.

This is the tv I have and like I mentioned, I have been using the settings I listed previously.

I did bump it up to Elways and am liking that - they aren't crazy different or anything, just slightly brighter for me.

I don't think your PQ will change much after 100 hours at all.. I haven't really noticed any difference with mine, but I did fly to 150 very quickly.
is there some differences in internal processing between the different modes such as cinema, vivid, and standard?

i would assume there is, so then is custom mode with the the internal processing turned off?
My updated settings after 200 hours, I think I will stick with these.

Cinema:
Picture 70
Bright 51
Color 32
Tint -3
Sharp 58
Warm
Almost everyone here says that Warm is the correct choice. But when I've been using that setting, it seems to slightly darken the picture and to slightly over-saturate the colors. Kind of makes the colors look like those on an LCD. Has anyone here used Normal and liked it? I can imagine that there would be different settings if the base was Normal instead of Warm (like the tint and brightness, etc)? What settings in Normal looks good?

(It seems that every night I just love to go home and fiddle with the settings in that elusive search for an even better PQ. Of course what looks good on one channel, or one source, might not look as good on another. Sure would like to find a way to tone down the red.)

When a professional comes to do a calibration, would they start with Normal or Warm mode? Of could you do a calibration for both settings?

I agree with the notion that different sources and even different channels require different settings. For instance, in watching the Phillies game in hi-def yesterday I used game for the best results. When I watch Letterman, again in hi-def, I use the custom setting that mirrors Elway's settings except with the picture dialed slightly down. At night and with blue-ray or hd-dvd, cinema seems the only way to go. Either way I absolutely love this tv.

Yeah, I understand that! My wife thinks I'm having an affair with the tv, since that is all I talk about and is the first thing I want to see when I get home.

One thing that I really do not want to get into is using a different setting depending on what I'm watching from what source. I'm don't want to be that obsessed.

I wish I could do two Cimema settings, one with warm and one with normal.
I like both depending on the source.

Elway you might not be getting the best picture for everything if you are leaving the STB on 1080i, especially if you are using a Science Atlantic STB.
