Using these settings and moving the color and the tint up and down, I cannot get peoples skin tones anywhere close to accurate.
First day with the set.

Using hi-def? A good source? Your figures aren't that far off; the sharpness should be around 50. As an example, the E-A-G-L-E-S game was fantastic on my 46". Colors, as usual, were perfect.

I found a little EE up at 50....30 is doable but 20-25 seems best for me.
Yes, tried two BR's and have D* HD.(using MPEG4 channels for comparison)

Any SM adjustments to the gains/cuts that have been done to satisfaction and reported in this thread?

Maybe you're hyper-sensitive to red push. You could check the patterns (the AVS calibration files have them) and see if your display has more than, say, 5%.

Would red push turn pink/tan to orange?



But what I really think I'm going to need is some advice on the SM gains and cuts.

Its funny how different set get different settings, i have the 46pz85u and used the digital video essentials dvd and came up with.

color - between 41-44 ( the blue pluge blends perfectly at these numbers )
tint - minus 3 ( i adjust sometimes )

cinema for everything and everything else off

The only calibration tool I have is Wall-e, so I decided to give that a shot. My main problem with the tv so far has been the black levels not being as dark as they should and skin tones being way off no matter what I do. My parents have a Sony xbr4 at home and well the TV is kicking the **** out of my TV in black levels..

Any ways to go about trying to fix this without service menu?

I have a 46fd18 Costco's 80u with alittle over 100 Hrs the over all appearance of the PQ is always like a dull gray film over the screen no matter what the settings but with that said the colors and clarity are outstanding. The setting I find best for me are

I really like this tv can't be beat for the price I just wish it had more POP brightness wise

S'funny. I've seen a couple but mostly this is about the time people start saying to call a pro. Tom Huffman suggests that any fixable problems can probably be repaired with the user controls and the Cinema mode gamma.

Fixable appears to exclude gamma and red push.

Tweak (turn down) the picture while using a gray ramp. My display is chock full of tipping points in the picture range between 25 and 80 and while not perfect I can get it down to a few faint pink tints. On my PZ85 it's not really possible to hide the WTW bars without going above 90 which totally whacks the gray scale fidelity. Of course I'm currently (mostly) using a DVD for calibration images so I remain a bit tentative.

So has anyone got the UK version of this set like me? I really would ike to know if anyone has had theirs calibarated and what changes were made.

I did, then recalibrated.
Still ended up way too blue.

I went through Tom's posts....seems I need to learn to live with it, or return for a 800u or sammy 650. Good thing I bought at BB this time incase.

I tried doing that. It is just way off. I can get it to be decent, with just a few blue and green tints; However then the scale is in the wrong order. What i mean is some lighter greys are actually towards the left and actually left of darker greys..

Could it be my scale is just way off?

Just remember there is no "perfect"TV! Me personally I feel that you will just exchange one set of problems for another. I'm happy with my set and don't plan on changing anything. If you're not happy then change it.

If you're saying that gray ramps don't increase/decrease monotonically then yes, something is very wrong.

Very true. I knew going in that I was choosing the Panny for better black level, a tad brighter and better anti-glare screen over the Sammy's more accurate color.
I thought that with my experience with both non-elite and elite Kuro's that black level meant the most to me, but color accuracy actually might be my biggest bugaboo.
I will give it some time to see what I can do with it and wether or not I want to trade for as you say a different set of issues.

At second glance, it seems the Wall-e optimizer is a bit off. I just used the AVSHD disk and the grey scale isn't too shabby.

I ended up calibrating custom and cinema and ended up with these settings:

Now I can't decide which is better to use

CUSTOM: While watching PotC blu-ray custom provides much better pop, however it introduces noticeable noise in light scenes.

Cinema: Less noise, but screen is a bit too dark for my taste. Does provide more accurate color. Especially for greens and skin tones.

I think I will be sticking to custom until Gregg from Lionsav shows up to calibrate. Posting pics in the John Fr Pic's thread now

i think your set would benefit from doing some tweaking on the service menu. see the 800 thread pg. 190 and on to see how it can be done. You must be very careful and enter at your own risk. While I don't have the same model as the 800 or the pz80, (I have the px80) I made the adjustments to my set and that "dull gray film" that you refer to was gone and my picture has more POP. You mileage may vary. Also make sure to write down your default settings before making any changes in case you want to go back to the original settings.

Good to hear this about the dull film appearance can be tweaked out in the SM but WILL NOT be the one to do it I totalty F'ed up my old RPTV doing SM adjustments .I'm a big beleiver in ISF calibriation by a pro and if it still bugs me after 300+ hrs I will call the same guy who did it on the RPTV I never had to touch anything ever when he finished ( he spent 5 hrs on it). The colors blow me away on this tv it seems to be getting brighter every day, it is a keeper. Thanks,I will check out the 800 thread too.

Well more specifically it says:

Exit Service Mode: Press "R" on the remote control to exit the IIC mode. To exit the CAT (main service mode) use the DOWN button on the remote to select the ID mode, and then switch the main power off and back on.

Pressing R doesn't work on my PZ85. I suppose if you were worried you could always bring up the hours display and then do the power based reboot at that point.

The keohi info all seems a bit stale.

The PZ85U service manual says use the power button (display or remote control) to exit the service menu.

Exactly. That's what I was going by.
I made some SM adjustments last night (per previous recommendations) and the colors look very accurate. Still in the break-in period. So, I have the Pic and Brightness dialed down. After the breakin and my filter set arrives, I'll do a proper "eyeball" cal with the DVD.

Is their any way to fix green trails behind fast moving objects by calibrating? because i cant seem to find any and they drive me nuts
