So what settings for Sharpness is untouched?

I want to set mine where the image is NOT sharpened by the TV and display as pure signal as possible.

0 or 50?

Id recommend 50. When using DVE, I noticed some softness at zero(softer than 50). Tom is also using 50 that makes me pretty confident you are safe. I have to wonder if 50 isnt like zero, and going below takes it negative.

Where can one find AVS 709 on this site? Searched for it but ended up with every "AVS" entry!

I use Custom for gaming on the 360. It looks FAR better than my Cinema settings for gaming. It isn't as brightly pushed as the Game setting and looks better IMO. I don't have my exact settings but it's around 70 picture and 49 brightness. I also have the color a little higher for gaming than I do for TV watching, around 47. I would suggest trying custom and tweaking it to your tastes.

I have been using Cinema for gaming without any problems. I did start playing around with custom after the CNET review and can get a nice picture. Personally I think CNET custom settings suck. I'm not quiet sure what they were looking at when they calibrated the set.

will these settings work on the px80u? i just bought one, and as far as i can tell the px is 720p and the pz is 1080p, but im not 100% sure. Anyways i bought DVE as well, and calibrated my tv (just on standard mode) though my xbox disc drive and came up with these settings.

picture mode: standard
picture: 52
brightness:28
color: 46
tint: -2
sharpness: 0 (didnt see a change here)
color temp: warm
color mgmt: on

i just got this tv on thurs, so i only have a few hours on it so far. if anyone can tell me if my settings are ok, or if i should change them...please do. also if the other settings in this thread will work please let me know.

thanks.

I agree, their recommended "custom" settings make me question the whole review.

The brightness seems really low, I'm sure you're crushing blacks.
ok well i switched to toms settings. do you know if he changed his advance menus? if so should i try someone else's settings for just using the user menu?
also are toms settings too high for a brand new tv (about 6 hours use)

My current calibration 42PZ85U after 150hrs. with DVE Blu ray

Cinema
Picture: 65
Brightness: 48
Color: 44
Tint: +5
Sharpness: 50
Color Temp: Warm or Normal
Black Level: Light

This got rid of most of the Red and Green Saturation, there still is a little I might look into ISF in the future.

After using a slightly toned down game mode for playing video games for a few days i tried custom and i think i like it better. But i havent touched it yet, its on default settings with picture at 100.

After about 150+ hours of break-in, these are the settings I came up with for viewing primarily DirecTV HD. I use standard--cinema seems too dark to me and custom didn't look as good as standard to me.

Standard
Pic 75
Brite 70
Color 40
Tint 5
Sharp 50
Temp Cool or Normal
cm off
xv off
cats off
nr on
mpeg nr on
black lev light
hd size 1

I tried that setting while im watching the Mets/Phillies game in HD on ESPN and with the standard settings i get a much lighter and more washed out picture then with my cinema settings which are tweaked slightly to my liking from toms settings. Standard mode gives me a whole lot of visible noise especially noticeable when they zoom out and show shots of the night sky.

I just wish there were other modes with such a clear and crisp picture as cinema. I sometimes find myself switching to game or custom mode when watching really colorful stuff on the National Geographic and Discovery channel during the day time. But as soon as black scenes are introduced into the picture i notice that cinema mode is far superior.

Try those custom settings on NBA-HD 601 or American Chopper on Discovery which are 1080i--I think they look pretty good. ESPN is 720 and always seems to have some color saturation issues. Cinema just seems too dark for me--possibly because I also use a RP-LCD Sony in another room which has a fairly brite picture.

I'm debating on getting a 50 inch PZ85 or a Pioneer 5080. BB has the 5080 for $2100 (sorry about the price talk). It's a hard bargain to pass on. Right now they are both in the same price range. I'm greatly concerned about the Panny's SD video processing and it's blacks. I like pictures with great detail.

I have to first ask why this is in the calibration thread?

Second, the 5080 is a great tv, you need to evaluate your seating distance. Im only 9ft away from my 50", therefore the SDE of the 5080 kept me away.

Why are some sharpness settings 50, and some settings at 0? That seems like it would be a huge difference or is it just personal preference?
Has anyone made adjustments in the service menu and can guide us to make some changes in there? (I know it's dangerous, etc., but for the technically inclined it's no different than editing any configuration file on a PC )

I wonder too. From my trainings, I've been told to up the sharpness until there is distortion then move it down a couple of notches until the distortion is 100% gone. To me it's in the 50 to 60 region depending on the panel (various units of the same models have variance)

Mines at 50 after using the DVE bluray. I saw some slight blur at 0, then at about 70 some edge issues showed up. I chose to leave it at 50, I think some stick with 0 because many sets should be left all the way off.
