Need help choosing home theater speakers

I just bought a 50" Pioneer Elite 110-FD display and Elite 95FD BluRay player. Both are terrific and now I want to choose some HT speakers.

We only watch movies; no music played in system.

Our family room is 17 feet deep, 13 feet wide and 8 feet high; hardwood floors. Right front corner opens to a hallway running parallel to the front wall.

I was thinking about buying B&W 703s for the front, 704s for the rear, HTM-7 center and ASW750 subwoofer.

Questions:

Are these speakers suitable for a room that size?

I read something that said my room was too small to benefit from a subwoofer. Is that true?

Any other suggestions regarding speaker choices?

Thanks in advance,
George SSS

I can't comment on the B&W speakers, but a HT system will benefit from a subwoofer. The "subwoofer out" channel on your a/v receiver (the ".1" in 5.1) is the Low Frequency Effects (LFE) channel and it has separate program material to enhance the overall movie soundstage. Even if you are not driving the bass to headache levels, the additional material available on that channel is worth having in a home theater.

George, You can always use a sub. It just adds to the whole movie experience. As for the speakers themselves, those are really nice speakers. If you aren't going to listen to music at all I'd save a few bucks and go with the 683s by B&W. Now if you just love those speakers, go for it, they are incredible.
I think a better sub can be had for the money though.
Also are you going to be putting down an area rug at least? All that hardwood makes for some funky sound effects.
B&W are really good sounding speakers but adding an amp to them take them to another level. I have a pair(older dm1400) and they sound good but throw some power at them and they are just unbelievable.

My one comment would be on the sub. MSRP appears to be in the $1600 range, and you need to think how much bass you really want out of your movies. If you really like to crank it and pressurize and shake the room, I would suggest doing some research into another subwoofer. My research and general consensus on this forum is that certain speakers (such as the sub and rears) don't absolutely have to match the mains- that is, you don't have to get a JBL sub for JBL speakers, Paradigm sub for Paradigm speakers, etc. At your price point there are LOTS of subs available that would be available to fill that room...SVS PB13-Ultra is around that price range (maybe $100-200 more), HSU VTF-3 with or without turbo, any number of eD or Epik subs...I just think depending on your preferences you could get more performance for that amount of money.

I agree with this completely. Another one to look at is AV123. Flavor of the month on subs.

This is all very good information. Thanks and keep it coming.

I think you can get as good or even better a sub for less than $1600. The HSU VTF-3 MK3 @ under $700 shipped has the ability to blow you out of the room. The SVS PB Ultra 13 is simply the best sub available in the not a millionaire category @ $1600 and the SVS PB 12/Plus 2 is an amazing sub @ $1100. I personally have the Velodyne DPS-10 which I got on clearance at CC last week for only $220 and it simply destroys my 11x11x8 room with pure, clean bass.
Remember with those hardwood floors, whatever sub you go with, you will want to have an acoustic pad underneath it to keep your planks from vibrating too badly.

I really appreciate all of this clear, concise advice. While I want to hear more about the speakers -- -- anyone have any opinions about amps?

I'm considering buying the best Pioneer Elite receiver [VSX-94THX], but I've also heard that a Rotel tuner/pre-amp/amp rig would be outstanding. Although this isn't the amp forum, I'd like to hear from youse guys on this score too. Once again, the system will not be used to play music; it is only used to view movies.

Thanks again,
George

For movies I wouldn't go the seperates route. If you were talking music maybe but in this situation get a decent receiver and speakers. Amp them if you can.
Really go look at those B&W 683s the really can rock the house. If you can go listen to Klipsch heritage series they really have a beautiful sound to them. The Reference series is also nice. There are lots of brands to choose from.

as far as receivers go, I have been really impressed with the new Yamaha V663 a/v receiver. Separates are nice, but for a home theater it is hard to beat the new full featured, powerful receivers.

And please, you really don't "need" a $1,000+ subwoofer. Excellent small powered subwoofers can be obtained from Hsu Research, Elemental Designs, or the JBL Venue sub currently on deep discount from amazon.com

No, pb13 ultra a strong contender but there are few options that roughly equal it's performance for even less money. PB12/plus 2 for $1k is something quite the opposite of "amazing" because those same $1k subs that compete with pb13 will make short work of plus/2
