Breaking the rules theater build - Page 6

It's coming together! Nice seats Don't forget to check out my shaker install!

My carpet guy also had issues with getting the staple gun under the lip of the stage which was built on 2x6's. He eventually got it though.

Is there going to be a trip hazard with no step light on the mini riser?

Thanks, oh you know I already took a peak at your shaker install, nice solution. First time I've seen them installed that way. Since you haven't mentioned it futher I'm guessing it doesn't interfere at all within the recline. How are you liking their effect overall and from the area you positioned them in. I was looking at the chairs when I was putting the backs back on and I'm hoping to be able to do something similar without having to take the backs off again. That back area is pretty open.

I knew your carpet guy had issues, didn't want to mention to mine cause I forgot to say it before he started oops...

As far as the mini riser goes, no one would actually step up to it. The edge of the back row of seats will be just about flush with the front part of it. Basically just raises your bum 4.25". My wife and I are still able to comfortably sit down and have our feet touch the second tier no problem I'm 5'11" and she's about 5'5", and like she said who's not gonna want to recline anyhow.

I really like the effect. I had family over the weekend and I didn't tell them about the shakers.. they thought it was all form the subwoofer.

Taking off the backs isn't that hard (though it hurts my thumbs). Using my mounting method, it was MUCH easier to do with the backs off. I basically tilted the seats forward so they rested on their fronts, took the backs off, screwed the plywood down, screwed the shaker to the plate, and then reinstalled the seat back.

I also wired up and tested all the shakers before attaching to the plates. Amazingly, they all worked on the first try.

Nice. I'm getting two of my chairs replaced so I've been messing with those, I can push the clips to get the back off ok, but when I try to reach for them liner on the inside is in the way and I have to pull it more than I would like. They should have tacked the line a little higher and expose the little brackets so you could get to them a little easier.

I have to wait for funding to get back in order, but I'm hoping to be able to wait or catch the shakers on sale. Last year I had just missed a sale of $25.00 bucks each...

Oman,
Excellent job on the riser, stage, and carpeting. Everything turned out REALLY nice. I wish I have my riser and stage done already. By the way, what did you mean by T&G?

tongue & groove, http://www.ameripanel.com/images/floor_jont.jpg home depot & lowes have 3/4" readily available for flooring. I used it on top my riser and stage. The t&g goes horizontal across the joists. Actually very reasonable in cost, about 11-12 bucks a sheet.
how far is your side speakers from the back wall?

I went & measured for you, from the back wall to the very center of the speaker it is 54 &3/4" or 4' 6.75". In the pictures it is a little deceiving and they appear to be closer to the back wall than they actually are. I basically positioned them to be right in between the front and back rows.

One thing about the way he installed the bass shakers, it feels like it vibrates your back instead of your butt. When there's just a *little* bit of bass, you might feel it only in the back of the chair. Once it's turned up a little it still ends up shaking the whole chair so no complaints

Ah time off, nothing like taking some time off to get some real progress done. I have only a couple of days left for the year to hopefully plan around holidays for long weekends. Looking foward to seeing your progress.

Excellent, exactly what I was wondering. I had heard someone comment about to much vibatrion in the dairier, so using the open area in the back of the chair seems like a perfect solution. The caveat being you don't have to get around all the mechanicals of the chair from underneath. Thanks for the feedback.

Maybe I just sink in more or something, but the shaking feels fairly uniform to me...

I was playing some loud music last night to feel the bass drum beats and it was right in stomach/lower chest. Granted, the sub helped... but a lot of it was the shakers.

I gotta budget for some shakers and an amp. The Mrs. said I was cutoff including Christmas, I don't know though I think I've been good enough where hopefully Santa may still have me in mind for a surprise or two

Bah!

Oh well.. the $37-ish I payed per unit was still an acceptable price to me... especially compared to the price of butt kickers (even BK minis are ~$75 each).

It's still $37 unless you order 4 or more. I only need 2 more

Ya I forgot to add that tidbit. I would see if I could go in with somebody else, if not it might be more worth it to get 4 for $99.00 plus shipping vs. 2 for $74.00 plus shipping. Then you would have a couple of spares in case or you could try to resell them on the bay maybe.

Ok I have a major problem guys. I was forced to setup the rest of my chairs this past weekend. So for those who aren't familiar I had to prop up my Loveseat confing in the back row(I0I00I0I) and my 3 row (I0I0I0I)in the front.

The reason I had to do this was that I had my sisters kid's (4 boys, ages 3-7-10-14) and my brothers daughter (age 10) stay with us over the weekend. In order for us to fit comfortably the Mrs. gave me the look with a raised brow and said "you best set them seats up". Not one to question the demand of the Mrs. after having dealt with the small brigade all day Saturday, with whom she went apple and pumpkin picking (I was doing some work for my dad), I jumped into action...

My Son the oldest went out with his friends, so it was the wife, my daughter, my niece, 4 nephews and myself. 8 of us but the two small ones shared a seat so no problem there.

Here lies the major problem as we settled down to watch Iron Man, to the sweet scent of apple pie baking in the oven The seats are too darn comfortable and not many made it through the entire movie
Down for the count were my Daughter, the 3 oldest nephews, and my wife was dosing in and out, and when she was up could only keep one eye open.
Mind you this is with room shaking bass, I could literally feel the vibration in the back loveseat area beginning with the Humvee attack scene and several other scenes through out the movie. The troopers who hung in there to watch the whole flick were my niece, my youngest nephew(not entirely fair, he did take a long nap during the day) and myself.

The mini riser I added to the top of my riser worked perfectly, the first tier of the riser is perfect as aisle space with the seats in regular position. Overall very pleasing. Definately gonna need to invest in some bass shakers for additional shake in the seat (although it was pretty good now, especially for a sub which I got on special for $150.00 free shipping ) to try and keep people awake and even then I'm not sure it will work

In other news, I went yesterday to pick up most of the material I will be using to make my screen frame which will be the focus this week. Unfortunately their were a couple of items that wern't available at the Lowe's near my home so I will be checking the Lowe's near my job today. Also need to get to Jo-Ann's fabric to try and find some Velvet. Anybody know where I can't get one of those 40% off coupons people are always talking about?

P.S. The Mrs. was thrilled with the loveseat arrangement and made the comment "worth every penny"

I do wish we could have done the love seat config in the front row... but it was just too wide. On the flip side with the single recliners, the wife can't hog more than one seat....

The shakers will definitely help to keep people awake. Our SVS PC-Ultra13 does a pretty good job of it too. Together... I fear for the structural integrity of the house.

Sweet!!! I don't think my wife would be able to handle something like that SVS. As it is now she jumped so high during that Humvee scene , she turned to me and started ripping that her heart was pounding . My response was that's exactly how it was at the movie theater (she didn't see it then) when me and the kids went to see it

You didnt snap us any pics of the event

I too fall asleep just watching my recorded shows off cable
post #173 of 1056
While it's important to not have seating that's TOO comfortable, I don't think you can make that assesment until you do the following:

1. Let the wife watch The Notebook in those seats. Does she still fall asleep?

2. Put on Ice Ace or Kung Fu Panda for the kids. Still awake at the end??

3. YOU watch The Notebook. Do you fall asleep? (Note: This should be the inverse reaction to item #1 above).

Ahh! to be honest the Mrs. is definately not keen on photos of the fam. being online, although I could have snapped off something to show the view from behind. Just didn't really think of it since I know it's a no-no, next time.

Good points there mn-hokie,

The Mrs. made the comment that she thought it was a good movie but that it seemed more geared to adults vs. kids just because it seemed harder for kids to be able to follow and understand and the fact that it takes a while for the true Iron Man character to come about.

Me personally I think it's great.

The Notebook I've seen it once, next time I would definately be snoozing...

Kung Fu panda definately need to check that out when it comes out, I think I'll enjoy just as much as the kids.

Allow me to send my condolences... You poor baby... I feel... just... so ... bad...

I am wide awake... Oh, maybe that is because my chairs are still in the box and I am sitting in a cheap recliner purchased sometime in the mid 90"s...

Hey, at least get a pic of the empty chairs.

Just happened to snap those off last night.

I got to start my DIY screen frame yesterday. I'll post some pics in a little while.

So I finished picking up the remaining items I was looking for in order to start my screen frame. I found 1.5" screen track which is used to screen in a 3 season porch. I will be attempting to use these tracks to spline in the sheerweave material on the inside face the frame. The track has screw holes every 8-10" or so which might not be enough to apply enough tension to hold the screen as taught as I would like, but it does have 2 grooves which should help in the application. Since I bought an electric staple gun to attach the velvet material (which is the last screen item I still need to get) I will be able to staple it down if need be. Worst comes to worst I will simply have to staple the shearweave to back of the frame, but I wanted to do something which would allow me to easily pull off the material. I could also try the velcro solution of it doesn't work come to think of it.

So I started with two 2x8x10 wood pieces to transfer over the radius of the false wall.

I thought the 2x8 would be enough to get the whole radius of the curve, however I was shy by about 1/2" on the backside. I figured I would try cutting one piece and if it wasn't sturdy enough I would go buy 2X10's.

Once cut though it was fine, very sturdy as a matter of fact.

You can see the arch on the front side which is what is important, on the backside you can see how it goes flat.

I was able to smooth out the curve a little better with a small hand plane.
Test fit on the false wall.

Then I was test fitting the vertical pieces 1x4x10's which make up the screen border and where the screen tracks will be attached to.

The 1x4's take shape extremely well and the curve I'm looking for is perfectly smooth. I cut 45 degree angles on the 2 horizontal pieces and now need to get the vertical pieces done. The 1x4's will be secured to the front of the frame with liquid nails and trim nailer. The inside vertical frame is simply made up of a 2x4x10 cut in half, just need to trim to the exact measurement that I need. My finished screen viewing area should be 110" wide by 46.5" high 119.5" diagonal for 2:37 aspect ratio. Hope to be able to get more done tonight.
