Totally agree. So to answer ooPAYNEoo's question I will say that there are a lot of streets that look the same in the beginning but that is how New York City looks. Aside from the 5th Avenues, etc, there is a lot of sameness. That being said though, you can play the game however you want, I will say though that there are a lot, and I mean a lot, more cops than in previous GTA games. So if you drive on the sidewalks and mow down pedestrians you will find yourself in a fire fight pretty quickly and it is a lot more difficult to escape the "search area" the higher you wanted level goes.

For instance I had to get a cop car to access its computer well, to do that, I had to kill two officers; I immediately had 3 stars and there were cops everywhere looking for me along with helicopters, SWAT vehicles, and Hummers. The search area I had to escape from was around a 20-30 block radius but every time you are seen by an officer the search area centers around your location again.

That is about all I will give away in regards to that. I try to drive reasonable for the most part but I like to drive fast, however I usually stay in the road. Thats just me though. When you get done with a good long run from the cops it makes you a little more cautious to try and fly under the radar. That is the beauty of the game though, no one has to play it the same!

I'm not sure I agree with that. I mean, I tend to speed like a maniac in GTA games, but generally I try to avoid killing innocents and bashing up random cars. Sometimes it happens ("Sorry, I'm a bad driver" sez Nico!), but I will go out of my way to avoid that.

Besides, all the reviews I've read have indicated that the storytelling here is much more subtle and complex than in past games. Nico is apparently much more sympathetic than previous GTA protagonists.

I get the impression that you believe GTA IV is the first ("worthless pornography"), not the second ("serious media"). Have you played it yet? What games do fit your definition of "serious media"? (Bioshock did for me. GTA IV looks very promising in that respect too. The Sopranos was a mob story full of sex and violence, and IMO it qualified as "serious media.")

Hopefully this wasn't too off-topic. If so, parsing out the offending posts and sticking them in a new thread might be appropriate (it's what I'd do on the game forum I moderate, IMO).

Foosinho, the fact that I said GTA is open to and deserves criticism means I do not think it is the first.

I know the game's only a few hours away now, but how do you feel the cops reactions to your actions are? I mean, if you have a one star rating, do they chase you around, or do they open fire immediately?

What I'm saying is in real life, cops would typically use shooting as a last resort type thing, and not the first reaction.

The one thing I hated about the GTA games (didn't play San Andreas) was that everyone shot at you for doing almost nothing. Like every 3rd person on the street was a gang member who would shoot at you, and the cops would have no problem barrelling over innocents or putting them in the line of fire if you happened to be wanted and they were in the way.

10-4 good buddy.

Watching the GameTrailer Review has me most excited. They touched on somethings that a lot of the other "reviews" and "previews" did not.

The physics looks more like true to life physics, where a car doing 40-110mph isn't going to make a corner (not even close) and just spin out wildly. One thing that bothered me about previous titles was that sports cars seemed to be on rails.

Also after watching that review, I am amazed at how great the game looks. An open area game that is just beautiful. I have never been to New York, but of the pictures, movies, etc. I have seen, looksl ike they did a dang good job in areas that are well known.

They seem to be a bit more lenient with 1-2 stars, however hurting innocents will cause them to open fire. For the most part they will tell you to stop and try to get in your car. Things do escalate pretty quickly after that though 3 stars is about the time they start to fire on site. This game is much more realistic in that there are not gang members everywhere that want to kill you, well at least not yet You are able to pretty much travel freely without hindrance, however the more you play, the more you may anger rivals that will go after you.

Is GTA4 community site up and active or are they waiting to the official launch to actually have it show data?

I ordered this from Amazon for free shipping, now I'm thinking I can't wait and need to pick it up tomorrow, then return the Amazon copy to whatever store I buy one from tomorrow.

Geezus, I make one statement and got mods coming in. No wonder I try to stay away from these sort of discussions. And I tried to keep it about gameplay. Some people are stretching for controversy as usual, I see.

Anyway, I live in NYC and I do not think the streets are the same. That's what's beautiful about NYC. Every area has it's special character. That's something I hope really comes through... even in San Andreas, no street block was the same!

Peace. I'll wait to play. No more posting about it.

I didn't mean to say that all the streets in NYC look the same but that each borough kinda has its own style if you will. I am not from NYC so I am sure that when you play the game you will be able to pick out landmarks and things that I would have missed that would stick out to you.

P.S. The mods job is to keep things on topic, he wasn't attacking anyone person just making sure that the posts stay on topic and the thread keeps moving. You bring up a valid point and in another thread it would make for a good discussion as long as everyone can keep an open mind about different ideas.

That being said back to the game!

So if you're in a fist fight with someone on the streets, and have no stars, will the cops still come after just you? Because in real life they'd go after both of you or simply try to break up the fight.

That always bugged me a bit, that they always knew that it was you who they needed to get...

I just read the article that says game insiders are saying GTA IV could be the biggest selling video game of all time, breaking Halo 3's record. They are saying it could make 400 million in its first week of release. If it turns out to be true, that is some insanely huge numbers.

I can't wait for this game. We just moved in over the weekend and the first thing I unpacked was my HT gear just to get ready.

Coming from a website called Sony Defense Force I'm a little reluctant to believe the videos aren't creatively edited and/or biased in the least.

I don't ever recall getting stars for FIST FIGHTS. Only when the weapons came out.

In fact, if you helped the cops, I thought you got $$$ or some sort of stat....

I will laugh if they release any new XBLA or PSN downloadable games this week.

I don't mean to start anything, but is it true MS paid Rockstar $50 million for downloadable content?

I think so. No different than McD's paying a studio for the right to carry happy meal toys for a movie or Blockbuster paying for the right to exclusively carry Weinstein movies, or any system paying a developer to develop exclusively for that console, or Pepsi paying a movie theater to exclusively carry Pepsi or a TV network paying to for exclusive rights to show reruns of a show, etc etc. Who cares? That's business and it happens all the time.

The site is a well documented satire on the constant flamewar between Sony and Microsoft supporters. Really, you should read the GTA4 review on the site. The thing is hilarious. Specificly, I love this picture in the review:

You should of gotten Next Day delivery. I pre-ordered mine from Amazon and just got an email conformation that it will be delivered tomorrow. I pay for the prime shipping and it was $3.99 for next day delivery which comes out to about what I would pay in tax if i were to walk into a store tomorrow.

If you read the review it isn't meant to be serious. The first pic comparison for example is the same exact pic, using a PS3 pic for the 360 version then lowering its resolution on, lol.

The Gif's though, I have a hard time believing they'd fake all of those pop up issues. I wonder if that is due to not using the HDD isntall option on the 360 or something else.

I thought there was no HDD optional install, WTF?

"I have a hard time believing they'd fake all of those pop up issues."

You don't have to fake it though. You just need to find a 360 with a half dead DVD drive, or a modded one reading off a DVD-R. Both cases will make streaming loads a hell of a lot slower than normal. By no means am I saying that there aren't pop-in issues on the 360, but I am saying that it wouldn't be difficult in the slightest to exaggerate the problems. Even something as simple as using a 360 without a HDD would probably increase pop-in drasticly.
the gifs are really bad. I really have doubts that would have escaped reviewers. my guess is that they came from pirated copies of the game and the textures aren't streaming off the disc properly.

Actually I think you are correct. Originally I thought it was an option like some other games have.

So they do or don't use the HDD?

Well, hard to say. Either way some of those looked really bad. I certainly have experience pop in games like that before (ES:IV for example pop in is really close at times) but nothing that would effect gameplay as it does in that situation.
I have a feelig that one of the many reviews out for the 360 version would touch on this, saying that ity was very bad at times. None really do. I can recall playing mass effect and it was pretty blatantly bad with the popins, hopefully we dont get soemthing like that

I can't wait to not go to work tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze in some pool and food time in between grinding my thumbs raw..
