i just got the LG 42LG55 i know this thread is for the lg50 but this is the only thread i found and from what i have read the tvs are almost the same. my question is i watch mine in 4:3 and i have noticed a slight white glow coming from a corner of the set where the black bars are. its like a blotch of white very light but i see it and notice it. its shows up on all settings and inputs. is this normal or is something wrong with the set. really hope its not a lemon i dont want to rebox it and take it back. but other then that this is a really nice set im also having probs setting it up for the right picture for a standard digital cable box hooked up with rca cables. any help would be really helpful thanks.

A lot of LCD displays are like this. Its just inherent in the design to have a little bit of flashlight-bleed effects. Try turning down the backlight option, as its really the only way to get at the source of the issue. I would take it back if its really bad, but its tough to say with a written description. Pics?

Just got a42lg50 TV and love the picture. I'm watching it in a VERY dark room and it's great.

One problem. When I use a generic HDMI cable to hook my 360 up to the TV, the doesn't recognize a 1080p signal from the 360 over HDMI. It sees the optimal resolution as 1360x768 even. When I try the official MS HDMI cable, the TV DOES let 1080p display from the xbox.... this is VERY strange to me. I've read that one guy had some board in his TV replaced when his PS3 was having the same problem. Another guy used the official sony HDMI and didn't have problems. Sounds like it's common to LG TVs but I'm not sure if it's an actual problem or not... I can still take the TV back but am very happy with it otherwise. I'm worried that when I go get a blu-ray player and use HDMI that the TV won't let me send a 1080p signal...

Anyone have their 360 hooked up to their lg50 TV through a NON official Microsoft HDMI cable? If so, where did you get it cause I want one haha, not willing to pay $60 for MS's cable.

Not exactly the same problem, but I have this same TV and had the 360 connected by way of a cheaper Pelican VGA cable. I had problems with static image ghosting and blurryness. I replaced the cable with the official MS VGA cable and now the image quality is fantastic.

I've been doing A LOT of reading on AVS here and lots of people seem to have this issue. Some say replacing the set with a newer of the same model fixes it and others seem to think it's the cable... sounds like it's both to me. Cheap cable doesn't send exactly what the set it looking for I guess...

thanks for replying. i tried to post some pics but the upload keeps failing. i will keep asking around about the glow. its my first large lcd tv so i cant reallly compare it and i ordered it threw the source. never got to see it as a demo.

just bought this tv today, problem already.

when i go into the menus, and i highlight "Picture", where it SHOULD say "Press enter to set your picture settings." , it actually says "pibture" instead. another example is if i select "Channel", it says "ch'nnel". Likewise in several other menus, there are small 1 letter spelling mistakes, which sometimes fix themselves if i put the selection cursor over them to highlight them. language and audio and everything is set to english. anyone else have this problem?! SO WEIRD!

did i get a lemon?!

Well I used both of the main suggested settings for my expert 1 and 2(47LG50 by the way) and they look great for TV shows so far, but not so much for games. My games look good the way they are now but if I can get an improvement in quality like I did using the settings suggested on TV shows and movies, that would be great.

My father was the one with the PS3 problem you referred to. He called LG and they sent someone out the next day. Although the people he was dealing with were idiots, they did fix the problem quickly.
Also, no one from LG has contacted my father or myself to follow up with all the BS about this being a 1080P TV or not. So don't expect too much from LG.

Strange problem that hopefully somebodys got an answer to.

Using a Time Warner Explorer 4250HD box. When connected to my lg50 via component cables volume remains constant when switiching between 1080 and 480p broadcasts...so no problems. However when I switched to an HDMI cable the volume is much louder on 480p broadcasts versus 1080i...not just a small difference but almost twice as loud. (I've made the appropriate changes in the Explorer 4250 box but no difference)

I've gone back to the component cables for now but was wondering if the problem is with the Explorer 4250 box, the HDMI cable or something going on with the LG50.

Any ideas?

A question for 42LG50 owners regarding package contents. I just bought this set the other day. When I opened the box the middle square plastic piece of the stand with the round shape on one end was sitting in front of the set on the bottom of the box. I figure it was supposed to be packed in the one side where the manual, remote, accessories bag was as it fits right in there. I tested the set briefly and it seems to work fine, and the tv setup menu came up when first turned on, the manual/remote bag was never opened, the protective film was still on the bezel so I don't think it is an open box return or anything. Anyone else have the stand piece sitting right in front of the tv bezel? The only other way this could have came out is if the box was turned on it's side or something. I guess you never know what happens during shipping, but was just worried about what the piece could have done while falling to it's location. Any way to check panel time on these units? What build dates are people getting recently on this set? Thanks

A friend of mine has this TV hooked up to an older Motorola SD STB.
We are trying to use the TV's remote to control the STB but I can't find any codes for any type of Motorola STB anywhere.

Nothing in the manual, on the CD that comes with it or on LG's web site. Anybody using this configuration? And if so where do I find codes to program the TV's remote.

I've tried looking for codes for the STB to run the TV but I can't find those either. The urcsupport web site doesn't list a box that old. It's only 6 or 7 years old, maybe less.

This is my first LCD and I have a question. this was an "open box" purchase so i went home with it questioning every little thing. i have yet to hook up to blu ray player. I've only used the HD box for my cable and an upconverting DVD player. The DVD player seems to work well. With the cable, i notice a few things in the picture. my biggest problem is when watching certain things, it's as if the scene changes and the pictures seems really cloudy/blurry but then it clears itself up in a second or two. The image i provided is a worst case example since it's on a black screen but this is kinda what i see over the picture until it clears up. it's noticeable when right in front or at an angle (at an angle is worst). Also, when watching a NBA game on TNT HD, there seems to be a red hue that appears around the stands but then goes away. it's happened in a few games on this same channel. I don't know who to blame? The tv or the cable. When i use the HDMI upconverting DVD player i don't see this. any ideas?

FYI: I used the calibration settings i got off the posts from here.

Your second picture looks very much like the problem my father's set had although yours is far worse. His only did it when trying to input a 1080P signal. He called LG and they sent a tech out the next day and ultimately had the main board replaced.
Somebody mentioned that there was a discussion of this problem on the Best Buy web site but I haven't found it.

If you're to be going to be kicking yourself for buying open box every time something goes wrong then pack it up, take it back and pony up the extra bucks and buy a new one. The price seems to drop every time I look at them. Otherwise call LG and get them to come and fix it.

I'm assuming that you bought it recently and can still return it or get a warranty repair on it.
i wouldn't say that i'm kicking myself. I'm just looking for some comments. As i said, i don't notice this with the dvd player. it makes me question whether or not it may just be the cable signal itself. i would question this problem new or open box. the open box aspect means that i've been keeping a very close eye on every little thing that happens. i have the manufactuer warranty as well as the extended warranty for the next 4 years. so ultimately, i would think that i'm covered. my post was to just see if anybody else had similar problems that could attributed to a poor HD cable signal.
let me just also say that on some programs it looks terrific. HD theatre and Equator HD were stunning. It's on some programs and some channels that i seem to notice things which i think need to be questioned.
After re-reading your posts, you may indeed have a signal issue with your cable provider.

I had similar problems when I hooked up my first LCD TV to HD cable. The additional demand of a stronger signal brought to light some issues with poor and degraded connections between my house and the street. It took a few calls and a couple of tries but they eventually replaced a connector and a some of lengths of cable.

Give your cable company a call and get them to come and check everything out.

I just bought one of these, and I am curious if anyone knows if the inputs can be hidden from the menu? I would prefer to cycle through only 3 inputs AV1(satelite)/AV2(dvd)/RGB-PC(pc) (in that order) using the input button on the remote. currently it shows all the inputs. The manual leads me to believe it is possible I just have not found the sequence of doing this through the input sub- on the Q.Menu.
TIA

I think no one knows the answer. I have not seen a way to skip inputs but I haven't looked because I use a Harmony remote that does all the work for me =)

The sequence changes to what the tv receives signal from. If you only have those 3 with signal the order will be fine. I turn off my dvd player through hdmi and it will not show as a first choice until it(dvd) is powered on.

I just picked up the 42LG50, and it rocks, but I have one concern. I've put it together on the included stand, and it wobbles back and forth, especially forward and back. Has anyone else had this problem on theirs? I can't seem to figure out why, but I'm afraid to touch the TV. Is it supposed to be like this? Any input will help.the screws feel like they are in as best as they can be. I Check twice the screws now feels like is less loose but wonder if its normal
post #173 of 313
Yeah the base has no metal parts to solidify it so it does kind of wobble due to the flexing of the plastic but I don't find it a problem as I don't move it around very often.

just picked up a 47lg50 and returning the sammy40 530.
this is the second one, both c panel adjusted colours as per other users settings.
have the tv's side by side and the lg blows the sammy away no comparison at all.
might be the sammy's panel but not taking the chance again.
went to lg's korean site and shows the lg 47'50 has a contast ratio of 50,000 to 1 not 15,000 as stated on american site shows .... does show 15000 to 1 on the 52inch.
maybe got lucky with the lg but its incredable compared to sammy.

From what I have been able to find out some 47LG50s or other 50 Series TVs might have a higher grade SIPS panel with the higher level contrast ratio #s. An easy way to tell is if you lightly tap the screen with the tip of your fingers. Normal screens flash and react. SIPS panels don't. Another way would be to use a magnifyer to look at the panel structure of your screen. Chevron / pointed pixels = SIPS panel. Squares / rectangle shaped pixels = other lcd panel types of lower quality.

I just bought this set today, and the simplest function is escaping my comprehension. How can I tell what resolution it is set at? I have searched through every menu I can find, and I don't see where to select 720p, 1080i, etc. I have Time Warner with a Motorolla box, and neither shows me the resolution or how to change it.
