Trackmania Nations Forever

Anyone download the freeware Trackmania Nations Forever? I just tried it out and its a ton of fun. I had heard about Trackmania Nations before, but never played it, Forever is the sequel to that released last week. I'm working on the single player tracks now, because when I go online I get destroyed, but its still a ton of fun, and looks great. It also works really well with my wireless 360 controller with the Windows adapter (though no rumble since Microsoft's drivers don't allow it for DirectInput games.)

I downloaded it on Steam, but you can also get it from the trackmania.com website. I guess if you buy the full version (United Forever) you get 200 more tracks, more cars, and more backgrounds, but I'm happy enough with the free ones, especially since as far as I can tell you can download tons more user-created ones at http://tmnforever.tm-exchange.com

If anyone else is playing it, add me, same name as my name here.

I downloaded this game just the other day, the free version that is... It is a lot of fun so far. Tried to play some people online the other day, but some weird stuff happened and I never got to race so i dunno. My user name for that game is the same as my user name for this site.

What a great freebie this is! Very fun to play, very complete and to be honest looks damn great! I'm very likely going to pick up the retail version just because I got to see how it all works with this free one. Intelligent marketing like this works well on me and I'm appreciative of it. If you haven't gotten it, go do it, nothing to lose!

I always wanted to buy this game for the longest while but couldn't find it on Amazon and the like. Finally noticed it on Steam and picked it up. Trackmania United. Very nice game. Love it.

bump...

I remember when this was a paid game and I almost bought it. I recently heard someone talking about it on a podcast, and I'm stunned such a simple yet addicting game is... FREE!

I just described this game as "Wipeout on wheels". Thinking I was clever, I googled that phase and, as usual, I'm not as sharp as I thought.

I have a pair of those red & blue/green glasses, so I tried out the 3D mode. The foreground and the player's car pops right out the screen! Jumps look AWESOME!

However, the distant background doesn't go very far behind the monitor, so it after a couple minutes I was over it. I'll bet it looks great in this mode on a huge HT projector!

<--- Currently ranked in the top 50 for the great state of Tennessee.

Yeah, I was wondering how well the 3d mode works. I think some of the sections of track would probably be a little nauseating if they were popping out at me though.

I used to play this game a loooonggg time ago (or at least it seems that way) ... I am downloading the new free version for my new PC right now ... thanks for the info ... I'll update with my username once I install

Nice... I have jemkewl (waiting confirmation) and mab319 on my buddy list for this game. Nice job on the medals mab319!

I was hooked on this all weekend. GTA IV comes out tomorrow -- so I don't know if this obsession will last, but I'm thinking about buying the "United" compendium game. It's good to have an active PC game going.

I completed Vegas2 over the past weekend, if only because I have a feeling that GTA4 is going to own me for some time.

I downloaded this game last night off of Steam and played around a little with it. I just used the default keyboard controls and it worked fairly well. Are most of you using a keyboard or are you using a controller/joystick/steering wheel?

daverj,

the only reason i have so many medals for solo play is bc i have almost nil ladder points for the online play

mhufnagel,

I am just using the default keyboard controls also

I switched to a wired Xbox360 controller and it's so much better... analog steering and gas/breaks are the way to go. I wish it had rumble, but oh well....

I've got all golds in White and Green tracks, but the Blue and Red events are a lot of silvers - it starts to get really hard!

Currently ranked 21st in my state.

I just finished the White last night ... got all gold medals with two "Track Nations" medals ... switched over to a wireless 360 controller and it is even better ... I had forgotten how fun and quick this game was ... great way to kill 15 minutes (which then turns into about 45 minutes ... just one more race...)

you know, I tried using the analog gas/ brake. However, to make the car stick at whatever angle its at in the air, you have to press the brake. I couldn't get the analog brake to do this, only the digital one. However, if I used the digital brake with the analog gas, for some reason I'd have to let go of the gas and re-press it before I would accelerate, so I went back to using A for gas and B for brake.
I too did notice some interesting behavior last night between the analog and digital gas/breaking ... I ended up mapping gas and break to both analog and digital ... I use different ones in different situations (best of both worlds) ...
You know, now that I think about it... I just recently switched to analog gas/brake and I think I only mapped gas. But it was braking with my left trigger, so I thought it was working. I'll have to check.

Anyway, many of the tracks in White and Green are perfectly fine w/ on/off gas, so klipsch is right -- having both analog and digital is the way to go.

btw, playing this fast and insane racer for a couple days has really prepared me for GTA IV. Everyone else is talking about how hard and/or strange it is to control the cars in GTA, but coming off TMNations I feel like it's like driving in slow motion!

Try to steer the game with the smartphone.
I have tested it with trackmania - runs well.

"Looks cool. Boo, no iOS."

What do you mean "Boo, no iOS." We've had iOS gamepad apps for ages. For example:

Or the other 30 here:
