So far my most expensive estimate is for a Carrier AC and furnace, at 9,000 with a 96% efficient furnace and a 20 SEER AC unit. The lowest is about 5,300 for both with a basic system at 92% efficient furnace and a 14 SEER AC. The cheapest for just the AC is 2,800. I asked for a good, better, best from all the HVAC guys to give me options on which way to go. Most of the dealers around here go with Carrier, Bryant, and Trane. I currently have a Trane 80% furnace and an 11 SEER AC. Both are around 15 years old.
RT, IUSteve, we sure are experiencing a lot of ups and downs together here arent we!
RT, 96% and 20SEER, damn those are sweet, the energy savings would be realized quickly but that sure is a steep price. My quote above was for 95% and 14 SEER.
I am also thinking to do a variable speed motor as well.
One thing I am looking forward too is the quieter unit...this furnace sites to the right of my theater...I have had to shut it down for some movies as I found it distracting. A quieter unit sure would be nice.
Getting all these estimates sure is time consuming and can be confusing. Sometimes I wish I knew someone who I trusted to just tell me...go with company x and you will be happy. Then get it done.
Tomorrow I am working from home or taking the day off (undecided) and will meet with company #2.
The thing that kills me is getting multiple bids all are for different equipment, different companies so its not all apples to apples...and its hard to just go on price alone
