A little bit of progress....

This is what I have at the moment

But today, I plan to have the following done
- build out the carcass for the base cabin
- cut all my rails and stiles, toe kick, and shelves
- cut my built in media case rack (other side of the bar wall)
- start staining (rails/stiles/shelves/doors)

Is it time to tell us what the niche/pocket is for yet? Don't believe for a second that I'm gonna let you forget about that.

Happy Easter everyone!

Today, I wont do much on my bar build. However, yesterday I did get all the things done I needed. We just have one more coat of stain to do on the cabinet doors, then the poly gets on next.

I also ordered our counter top. We went with a high definition laminate counter top, 78 3/4" with only one edge and it ran almost 300.00! I was a little sticker shocked.

My next goal is to find a decent sent of under mount cabinet lighting. We have purchased a couple but they are just not right. (must be dimmable)
1. A flourescent tube undermount was just not bright enough
2. An LED puck light set was just too harsh of lighting. Even though it was 3000k (on the warm side of the spectrum) the LEDs changed the color of my walls! So that went back too.

Why is this so hard? Any suggestions out there?

Happy Easter to you as well!

On the lighting issues, have you tried a halogen puck? It just might be the goldilocks light your looking for.

Might be worth a shot.

RT, I just went and picked up some Xenon lights from Menards. They are puck lights and from what I read, they are dimmable and produce less heat than holegen. At least that is what I read...these things get damn hot and not so sure I want such a firey hot light under my cabinets....

These are the lights I picked up....let me know if Halogen are better than Xenon...

Nice progress and good score on the beverage center. That will be very nice and looks sharp.

As far as xenon vs halogen? I was thinking that xenon burned hotter than halogen but from what I can gather from a quick google search, that thinking is flawed. rolleyes.gif I'll look into it a little more for ya, as now I'm curious as well as to the correct answer.

I'd say your wife has a talent for staining and poly work. Nicely done. Kudos to the Mrs.

Nice work Doug. That little DVD rack is a great use of space that usually goes to waste.

Thanks RT.....Here are some more evidence of progress...

I have the counter in and the sink installed!

I dont know if you have ever scribed a couter to match up with imperfect walls, but I found this site...used the techniques to scribe my left and right sides...and in ONE shot, I have a perfect fit.

Here what I had to deal with:

And now I have this perfect fit!

Last night, my Dad helped me and my wife put up our backsplash.

First off, my Dad had passed away 4 years ago now. Sometime before he passed, he handed me a bag full of tile nippers, hand glass tile cutter and and small tile etcher cutter/snapper for 8 in tiles. Over the years, I had moved that bag of tools around from spot to spot in my garage. Often asking myself why I even have it as I thought I would never need it.

Well, last night, after mixing my thinset and letting it slake, I started to hook up my neighbors wet saw and was reading through the directions. I thought, dang, this is a lot of saw for these little pieces....then I ask my self, where is that bag of tile tools my dad gave me.

It was right where I expected...I was able to cut these tiles with these tools with such ease, that the wet saw would have been overkill and too time consuming (as it would be outside and lots of trips up and down the stairs would have just made this man tired (exercise????))!

Anyway, thanks Dad!

All, here are the results.

(Oh, and my fridge is set to be delivered tomorrow! this project....this basement is nearly done!!!!)

Looks really awesome! Your dad is proud of that!

We have completion...we have completion! This marks the completion of not only my bar, but my entire basement! Wahoo!

And now...some pics....

Very, very nice. Love the backslash looks sharp. Sorry to hear about the passing of your dad. Even though it has been four years it can be emotional at times especially with things like tools, projects, or other things that bring back fond memories. Kudos to your dad for passing along those tools. I was lucky enough to pick up a few hand tools from my grandfather so I know the sentimental value of things like that.

Feels good to say complete, finished, and done. Congrats!

Spent all your money on the basement, so you are forced to buy cheap crappy beer, I see. wink.gifbiggrin.gif

Looks beautiful. You've done a great job. I'm sure your father is proud cool.gif

Looks great! Nice backsplash! Congrats on the completion! I hope to finish mine....one day.

Great job! Backsplash looks great and I love the color of the cabinets. Enjoy!
Very nice, indeed. Thanks for sharing that small story about your Dad as well.

My Dad also passed away 4 years ago this May. In a similar fashion, I was fortunate enough to inherit many of his tools I remember 'trying' to use growing up as a kid.
I remember his hammer in particular, which was part of my 'inheritance." It's the reason I decided to hand frame our entire basement build. The many hours down there working away became my way of further connecting with my Dad after his passing, and I don't regret all the extra time it took. My thumbs might think otherwise after discovering how badly I suck at toe-nailing. smile.gif

sorry for the derailment. You have a great looking space, congrats on the finish.

Wow, guys, thanks for the comments. Everytime I use my basement, my Dad is with me in spirit and I cherish that!

I look forward to continuing this hobby and I will keep posting to my thread as I have updates....my next item is to perhaps redo my front wall and do a scope screen. But I need to research a bit further on this as it just seems that a lot of movies are presented damn near 16:9 and not sure what happens with that on a scope screen...will I be seeing pillar box just as much as I see letter box today. Or do I work in some sort of masking system...hmmm the options are endless.

My PT-AX200u and this thread is 5 years this past April...5 years! I almost have a tear writing that. 5 years since I finished my theater and the projector, each time I turn it on, and fire up my Receiver, brings a smile to my face!

Ok, enough sentimental chatter...I am going to have a beer.
