5.1 should not work through the TV
Sorry to bring up an old topic, but i'm having a lot of difficulty finding a definitive answer.
Sony Bravia KDL46V4100
Samsung HTIB TZ322 5.1
HD Cable Box
PS3+HD box --> HDMI --> TV --> Optical out --> Samsung
The Samsung supports DD, Dolby Prologic II, and DTS. Unfortunately it does not display what type of signal it is receiving or how many channels it's transmitting to.
As it stands now i can hear audio from all 5.1 speakers. When i'm gaming i can hear the sound "follow" my view point (ie: if there's a sound source and i turn my character in a circle i can hear the sound travel around me in a circle). When i'm watching a HD broadcast that has DD 5.1 i can hear ambient noise in the rears and commentary from just the center. Both also provide good output from the sub. These scenarios makes me THINK that i'm getting a true DD 5.1 from the OPTICAL OUT.
On the other hand, when i'm watching a standard def channel i still get audio over all 5 channels (but in this case the sound is the same from all 5 channels). This makes me think that my receiver is just up-mixing a 2-channel stereo PCM signal via Dolby Prologic II (unless the audio on these channels have been converted to DD first).
So which of the following scenarios hold true:
1) Bravia is passing the audio untouched and the receiver is processing DD 5.1 faithfully while upmixing stereo via Dolby Prologic II.
2) Bravia is stripping audio down to 2-channel and the receiver is up-mixing everything through Dolby Prologic II.
What i really need is receiver that provides more info on what it's doing but i'm broke.
I've read the manuals for TVs from samsung, pioneer, panasonic and they all state EXPLICITLY that the OPTICAL OUT will only provide 5.1 for the internal tuner, and will only pass 2-channel for HDMI inputs. Some research indicates that this is for HDCP reasoning.
The Bravia manual (for my model anyway) makes no such statement. In fact, the term HDCP never appears anywhere in it.
Does anyone have a V4100 hooked up similarly to a receiver that displays the input signal?
Thanks (sorry for the long post)
