No analog channels?

I just got my first hdtv today, its a 32" sharp aquos. It has a hdtv tuner in it. Im using it mostly for gaming, but Im frustrated that I cant get ANY over the air HD channels. Im about 25 miles from Chicago where the signals are broadcast from. I know thats not really close but i should get something right?

I went through the programming and it found none! Is this odd? What should I do? Do I need to buy an HD antenna?

EDIT: I mean digital over the air. Also the manual says that I need an HD antenna but I thought I could at least get something from it. Im trying to program it again i'll let u know if i have any luck. Isnt this odd though no over the air signals at all?

do you have any antennae hooked up?

While there is no such critter as a HD antenna, you do have to have some sort of antenna connected to the display to get OTA signals. I would guess in your area you would need a VHF/UHF combo and preferably outdoors. How far are you from the Chicago antenna farm?

By going through the programming you do mean doing a channel scan, right?

I do have a plug in, powered regular antenna though, got it from radio shack a year ago. Should I try that, would it have the same results??

indeed.

Just a long shot, but are you sure you're set up to scan for OTA ("air") stations instead of cable stations? Maybe it's scanning for cable stations and not finding any.

Looks like James was onto something. I hooked up my powered antenna and im getting all the analog channels and a handful of digital ones (3 to 4). Thanks a bunch, but I'm still under the impression there is a thing such as an HD antenna. Is that just marketing stuff you're saying?

Essentially, yes.

All antennas are effectively the same, it's a big piece of metal that picks up a signal. You can't have it be HD or not.

You might have to change the angle of the uhf antenna to get different stations. Or make an antenna out of hangers and wood like the guy on youtube.
