The game is dark as hell, I really had to boost brightness and contrast. But it's sweeeeeet...

No problems yet here on PS3, hopefully it stays that way. I haven't even killed anyone yet, just easing myself into it.

Sounds like many people are falling victim to the poor gamma curves on their television sets.

And with that, I must go to bed so I can get the game in the morning come 10AM. At which time I will either be disappointed by freezing or pleased that my late production 60GB doesn't have the issues of the early runs.

I just got mine at Gamestop. There were about 60 people there, which isn't bad considering that this is a pretty small town (about 10,000...legal population, anyway). It's actually in the top 10% of GS locations, sales-wise.

Played some on the 360 at a friend's on his 27" CRT. I just got home and I'm going to try the PS3 on my 42" LCD...but I'm so tired...I'll only play a couple hours

Got mine at Wal-Mart at 2am and I was the only one there. Guy said only 12 people in line at midnight.

Everything went smooth except on the way there I saw something in the middle of the road that I thought was a small cow, but turned out to be a huge sheep dog of some kind. He didn't move until the smoke from my brakes blew in his face.

One lucky dog.

Well, it's a good thing that you didn't hit him. The result would have been a two star wanted level...heh heh.

Don't think the irony didn't occur to me. If it had been a person I'd have plowed right thru, but I can't hurt an innocent dog.

Pretty sure it's DD 5.1 for both consoles. There are load times on PS3, but supposedly they're just a bit (3-5 secs) faster than on 360.

Sure, your PS3 is outputting 7.1 LPCM, but I don't think the game is. The PS3 is processing the game audio to fit your selected audio output settings in the XMB. I'm betting that the two rear channels are empty (de-select the 7.1 settings and your AVR will be able to matrix the 5.1 audio into 7.1).

Of course, I don't currently have the game in my hands--not until tomorrow morning--so this is purely second-hand knowledge. Verify?

I just played for 1hr 30min. Its cool that it keeps track of how long you've been playing and the longest time you have played for. Just went on a date, but didn't even get to first base with her. The six axis control for the bowling is ok.

Did you beat her in bowling? We tied 43-43.

And yeah, I can't believe she didn't invite me up! I was pissed. At least the bowling was free.

I'm looking for opinions....
How do the weapons feel compared to typical shooting games?

And what about the driving physics? Are they similar to the Midnight Club series?

For you, and other posters that the picture seems too dark. Are you using the rgb setting on the ps3..set to full? If so..try setting it to unlimited, it might help with the dark scenes?

Actually I'm getting 5.1 PCM even though it says 7.1 PCM. The surround backs (rear centers or whatever you want to call them today) are not on, but the PS3 thinks they are. Kind of the same way New Line BDs do 7.1 dts HD MA , but only output 5.1 PCM. There is nothing wrong with my equipment. It's all top of the line (Klipsch and Onkyo). You just need some [i][confidence /I] in somebody elses opiinion besides your own. Every game I own is PCM except a few. Do you even own the game or do you just make things up as you go? As for loading times there aren't any while I played for four hours.

Edit: I shut off 7.1 PCM @ 48kHz and it's now showing 5.1 PCM, and not 5.1 Dolby Digital which is also marked. It's definitely lossless though. The audio on my XBOX 360 is 5.1 Dolby Digital and I can hear the difference. The downside of unmarking 7.1 PCM is having to remember to go back to select it again later for BDs. There should be a fix to leave it on auto mode for the PS3 to ovoid issues such as this. I'm sure the PS3 is smart enough to figure it out. For those with 1080p displays, I had to unmark 720p and 1080i to get 1080p via the PS3 instead of my Onkyo 905 doing the scaling.

Launch 60 and no problems yet. Played the first couple of missions for 30 min last night, then another 30min of screwing around.

Man, it's going to take some getting used to the real physics and Euphoria engine. There's a good reason the cops suicide slide instead of hitting you head on now...

You (and the cops) go through the freaking windshield if you build up enough momentum and hit an object fast enough! Did this a few times, fun, but makes evasion more challenging. Also, ditching from a car has quite the detrimental effect on your health now. It's fun seeing your guy trying to get up and steady himself, all while still rolling down the street because of your momentum.

Anyone have a cop grab their ride yet, only to hold on as you go off to the races?

anybody have any tips on braking? I feel like I'm on ice when I try and stop.

Just bought my copy at BB online. I will pick it up at the store at lunch today.

I had that feeling too last night. I found that trying to slow down in curves is just too hard, so I use the handbrake to help make tight turns lol.

I really love how you can get thrown through the windshield. It's one of those smaller aspects of the game that really reflects the amount of time & effort they put into this one. The targeting system is pretty decent, although I'm struggling to get the controls down after playing Vegas 2 for so long! Can't wait to go home tonight & play some more
post #48 of 1111
For those complaining about the car controls, keep mind that the cars that are available in the beginning are going to be slower/clunkier. I only got to play for about an hour last night but thought they weren't too bad for what they were and that they are supposed to have a more realistic weight to them.
I got this before work so I won't be playing until 4:30 or so.
Does the game track your crimes. One of the things I missed from the orginal GTA:I was when you were arested their was a report of all you did.

Use R2 (hand break) to start a slide, then use L2 (reverse) or the button break to slow / steady the car.

You'll be power sliding in no time!

My major gripe is that you slightly hold the shoulder button to aim, and press full down to fire. I've never been very good at all when games implement stuff like this, especially when having to aim with the sticks....

Hoping there's another setup for this, otherwise it's going to take some getting used to.

Preordered the PS3 version of GTA IV on Amazon, and waiting for them to ship the dumb thing. They say that it will be shipped on May 5, because of the Free Super Saver Shipping, but I'm hoping that they would've been able to ship it right on launch day. Grr, now I have to wait until May 10 - 12 to play it. Serves me right for choosing free shipping.

I hear that, it's definitely awkward right now. I find myself having a hard time "squeezing" the trigger button halfway, I end up popping someone in the face before I get to pick my shot placement lol

Picked it up from walmart this morning...plenty in stock . This game is insane. I was messing with some of the multilayer stuff...looks like 14 diff. games to pick from . Still trying to figure out how it works (although, I was able to get shot and ran over in the first minute of online play ). I see where I can send out invites, but trying to see if there is a way that my "buddies" can join an in progress game without an invite (there is a spot where you can specify how many "buddy slots" to hold.

Great game!!! Going to need some getting use to though...this is my first gta game

'Got GTA IV (PS3) at CC with free $10 gift card which I applied it to "The Golden Compass" BD (with Target price match).

'Still trying to get used to the massive map and the gameplay.

Happy Gaming!

Played some Freemode online last night. Pretty fun. This game in particular allowed anyone to shoot anyone. Played freemode about and hour ago and could only shoot NPCs. It was like FF was off. Strange.

Trying to get online right now. "Cannot to connect to game provider, try again later". WTF? And yes, I'm signed into the PSN.

This is a slow thread so far, I assume its because no one has really picked up the game yet.

I am getting it after work from Gamestop, hopefully no freezing issues.....
Can't wait to go pick up my copy afterwork.... I have tomorrow off so I'll be playing until the wee hours of the night...

How are the radio stations folks?

You can listen to music through your cell phone as you navigate the map, correct? Has anybody who's registered for the R* Social Club, tagged any songs for purchase off Amazon?

Just picked up my SE copy from Circuit City. They had a stack of both SE and LE copies behind the counter.
I picked up the game last night and had a blast playing it for about an hour. It certainly does live up to all of the hype. Unfortunately I had to come to work today and am counting down the hours until I can play it again! I did not experience any freezing up issues or frame rate issues. The game runs smooth as silk and looks great. BTW I have the 40GB PS3 that included Spiderman 3. I did notice that the game is very dark at times and will check on what my RGB setting is at.

Also it only seems to output @ 720p, how do I change this?
