GTAIV running at 630P on PS3?

Article says PS3 running GTA at 630P and Xbox is running at 720P.

hmmm...

Kotaku article.

http://kotaku.com/385237/gta-iv-runs...hats-that-mean

Early test reports are finding that Grand Theft Auto IV is only running at 630P on the PlayStation 3falling short of hi defwhile the game runs at 720P on the Xbox 360. Clearly, the PlayStation version must look worse, right? It's not that simple. But the basic explanation is easy enough to understand.

lots of console titles render at lower res's than the final output on both the 360 and the ps3.
really not an issue at all.

ahhh...thanks.

640 actually. You get 10 extra lines!

While resolution is easy to quantify, it is a number the overall IQ is not.

720P 2x AA on 360, but it has slightly more pop-in and some strange dithing artifacts.

640P 0x AA on PS3, but no artifacts and has some post-processing filters to soften the IQ.

In the end most reviewers could hardly tell them apart, some said the 360 version looked a sharper (as it should), but also said they like the Ps3 version look more.

The PS3 version also has the HD install which has faster loads and less of them.

What is ironic thing is one day (IGN review) the net is on fire with saying the PS3 is better, then later it's all about 640P (which they report wrong). So anything for hits I guess.
I guess it goes to show the difference between 640p and 720p is minimal at best. And that everybody who was haranguing Bungie for making Halo 3 640p were just being tools. Alls I know is that the game looks great on my PS3 and more importantly, it's a lot of fun.
cod4 was also 640p on both systems I believe.

To me it seems like the 360 & ps3 development teams took different paths. Neither is necessarily good or bad.

See tgable's post for clarification.
COD4 is 600P on both. Halo 3, while also 640P no aa, has nothing to help with the jaggies, no post-processing. The high contrast environments make it worse too.
See... resolution isn't everything. Bring on the 720p games with full effects instead of 1080p games.

See Uncharted and Heavenly Sword

I kinda wonder what the 360 version would look like if it were also at 640p tho... Interesting that they chose to go with two different resolutions. Also makes it harder to say one is better than the other haha. I guess I'm still waiting for that one game that hands down looks better on the ps3 than the xbox... ah well. (I might still be bitter about the whole madden thing lol)

GTA 4 looks like an awesome game. I've never really been into them before, but I might pick this one up just because theres so much to do.

Anyone finding this game way too dark? I have a Sony XBR5 and I just popped it in and the game starts in the night time and I find it ridiculously dark! What gives...

Try RGB limited in the PS3 display settings

What the hell is "630p".

That makes NO sense.

It runs in 720p on my PS3 (1280x720). I know that from pressing the "display" button on my TV I don't know what f'ed up method they used at "Kotaku".

What "630p" refers to (which is actually a misnomer, by the time Kotaku misprinted 630p, the person from whom they got the information had corrected themselves and noted it was actually 640p) is the framebuffer in the console.

That 1138x640 picture is then scaled up to whatever resolution your TV set supports and output to the set (or scaled down to NTSC resolution if you're using composite video)

It's exactly the same thing as, but done in a different component as your TV set scaling a 1280x720 picture to 1366x768 or 1920x1080.

This post shows that you have no place on AVS. By the way I like how you put Kotaku in quotes like it's some obscure website no one has ever heard of and that isn't to be trusted.

Anyway on a separate note can anybody tell me how much worse the pop-in is on the 360 version over the PS3 version? Part of me wants to get the 360 version because I have a feeling the DLC is going to be both huge and amazing. But then part of me wants the technically superior game. I'm so freakin torn, damn you Rockstar for taking MS's $50 million dollars!

Well I bought the 360 version of the game today because of the DLC and online experience - and I'm seriously considering getting the PS3 version tommorow also - and just playing the solo campaign with the PS3 and using the 360 when the DLC comes out or for the online.

I forgot how god awful noisy my Elite 360 is. Hell I have to turn up the volume so loud just to hear the dialog over the whirring 360 that it's disturbing my wife who goes to bed early (our bedroom is above our living room).

My biggest guess for an explanation would be that the new Euphoria engine(the Ragdoll and physics based animation engine) wasn't as efficient running on the CELL platform rather than 360's triple core platform. This new engine has to be a huge part of the backend of teh game. Every visible character on screen uses this engine all the time. Old ragdoll engines would only kick on when a onscreen character died. WIth this thing it's always running because now every character can react in many different ways. It's likely that anotehr 6 monthes and they would have had it running better on the ps3.

I don't have the PS3 version. But in the 4 hours I played the 360 version tonight, I only noticed texture pop-in twice. It isn't like there are objects popping in. Just sharper textures. And it is really infrequent.

The multiplayer is ridiculously fun!

really not an issue at all.

That's not the issue. The issue is that ONLY the PS3 version has a lower resolution. You can argue all day if it matters or not, but it's still not fair to PS3 owners. They paid the same price for the game as Xbox owners and likely higher prices for the console it's self.

I have a friend who got his PS3 for MGS4, DMC4 and GTA4. So far both GTA4 and DMC4 have looked better to him on the Xbox 360. I don't think that MGS4 is ever coming to the X360, but if it does then it would totally make the reasons he got the console all worthless.

I cherry pick the best games from each system personally. I get all exclusives and only the best ports. For those that only take one side or the other though, this stuff sucks.

despite the resolution differences, and lack of AA on the PS3 version, most agree it looks slightly better. slightly less pop-in, cleaner look (post processing and slightly lower resolution to hide aliasing), less dithering and warmer colors. 360 version does look a little sharper though. both versions look very close though. another plus for the ps3 version is that the load times are slightly shorter.

Alright good to know, I'll probably end up with the 360 version then. Man it's gonna be weird playing GTA without a Dualshock.

I don't really see what's unfair to PS3 owners here. Can you see the difference between 640p and 720p? Because I can almost guarantee if some website hadn't pointed this out no one would have known the difference, especially since most people agree the PS3 version looks better than the 360 version. It's just another stupid thing that will get blown out of proportion by a bunch of people who don't have a clue what they're talking about just like Halo 3 and CoD4 when everyone was saying "OmGZ teh resolutions iz lower than 720pz! Dis gam is not in teh high definitions!!!11!!"

At the end of the day the game looks good, it looks good on both consoles, and even with the lower res the PS3 version looks better and has less pop-in. Go enjoy your game folks.

By the way Cynn I wasn't implying you don't know what you're talking it was more of a general statement.

You forgot wtfuxor!!!!!!1111one

anyway I totally agree, The game looks good and resolution is a small part of the over all picture..... frame rate and compression are more important.

The ones that bitch about the res probably have a 40 1080p lcd and sit 12 feet back from it anyway

Lol sounds about right. I know a guy who sits a solid 6 feet back from his 19" 1440x900 monitor and will still probably try to hold this whole 640p thing above my head since he jumps on any excuse to knock the PS3 (valid or not) like Oprah on ham.

It seems most who have seen both have said the 360 version is slightly sharper while the PS3 version has a slightly softer/warmer look. Is it possible the 640p is the reason for the 360 being a tad sharper looking, or are other factors at work?

640p might have something to do with but I'm gonna wager it's because the 360 has 2x AA and the PS3 has none.
