Evil Dead & Evil Dead 2

Does it matter if I watch Evil Dead 2 first? I had both on my list, and of course I received Dead 2 first. Thanks.

not really, Dead 2 is more of a remake of dead 1 than a sequel. but dead 1 was more of a straight up horror film, dead 2 is more of a horror with some dark humor built in.all 3 vary enough from each other that they can be enjoyed separately. The only part of the movies that increases in value over time is Raimi's direction and his crews ground breaking at the time camera techniques(and easily Bruce Campbells awesomeness.

I just finished watching Dead 2. PLEASE tell me the first one is better? If not, I don't want to waste my time watching it. I DO NOT like comedy mixed in with a horror movie.

I remember a lot of people praising Evil Dead and it seemed to be a movie that I'd like. But, it didn't grab me mainly for the reason you mentioned. Although I thoroughly enjoy the Return of the Living Dead movies and there's comedy in them.

Jim, Evil Dead is much more serious, but you must realize it is quite crude by comparison. They had a single camera, no money and no professional crew. If you didn't like Evil Dead 2 I don't really think you will dig the original.

Hopefully you rented them.

Me, I love the Evil Dead films, with 2 being my fave. Bruce was superb and gave a truly one of a kind performance that should have gotten him an Oscar nod. Don't laugh! What he did in that film is insane and few actors could have pulled it off.

The original is kind of slow and dated at this point, but still is fun. Army Of Darkness is a hoot, particularly the director's cut.

sorry you didn't like 2. Evil dead 1 plays like a old 70's horror movie. Some good direction and acting(a slight tinge of tongue in cheek humor but it's buried beneath a lot of gore and screaming). Army of darkness is pretty much a action/comedy more than horror but it is a blast especially on it's first couple viewings.

Have to agree, If you did not enjoy ED 2 you will find dated. ED 3 is one if not this best Horror/Comedy around.

If you dont like Horror/Comedy skip
Fido,Shaun of the Dead, Black sheep, Dead and Breakfast,Hatchet,Big Bad Wolf,Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon,The Tripper, etc

I think you might of had to see these movies near when they were new to realy enjoy them. I remember watching these on VHS rented from the video store back in the 80's. I have been a big Evil Dead fan ever since. I now own the "Book Of The Dead Collections" of ED 1 and 2. The ones that look like this....

"HAIL TO THE KING BABY".

Evil Dead was a true masterpiece in the 80s' when it hit video, it literally changed horror films and what could be done on a small budget. I mean we were in that rut with slasher flicks and really, really craptacular direct-to-video stuff was just starting to appear, Evil Dead changed all that. It really woke up the horror genere. Today, sadly, I find it hard to really get through it...its just a little too slow, a little too low budget...and I watch Bruce Campbell playing it straight and keep thinking of the same scene shot for ED2 and...well I guess ED2 has tainted my experience for Ed1.

When I was like 12 and saw ED1 the first time it was like "OH...MY....GOD". Then I was a little older and saw ED2 and was like "OH...MY...GOD..HAHAHA THATS AWESOME!". I was past my "Faces of Death" phase by that point anyhow so the gore didn't mean as much as the overall movie experience did.

Not to mention launching the careers of Sam Rami and the Coen brothers.

Bruce Campbells first book "If chins could kill" LINK spends quite a few chapters on the massive ordeal the original short and eventual full movie shoot were. Plus the book itself is pretty entertaining.

also how did the coens get started on it? I know joel was associate film editor but I don't even remember hearing anything about both brothers being involved.

I thought I remembered Ethan's name in the credits-- just looked up on IMDB and didn't see anything-- I also remember hearing something about Ethan working with Joel on it, but I'll have to find something concrete...

Or, my memory could be faulty.

Edit: Ok, I checked at wikipedia, and apparently the first project on which they worked together (other than super 8 kid projects) was Blood Simple, so apparently my memory is getting faulty (oy). Hmm, maybe I'll just edit the wiki page to match my memory.
