Basement Design Help With Theatre/Game Room

I've attached pictures of the design for my basement. I, like many, didn't want a dedicated home theater room. We only have 3 bedrooms upstairs, so the addition of 2 downstairs will surely help out if/when we sell. The picture of the big screen doesn't accurately reflect that there is two feet from the edge of the wall back to the screen. This should allow for an area where my components can be stored. I really need advice on speaker placement (7.1) and additional home automation features. I'd like the ceiling mount for the projector to be and electrical type that drops from an enclosure in the ceiling. Unfortunately, the prices on those mounts are more than I want to spend on the projector! All comments welcome and appreciated.

Wow, that looks great. I love the double tray ceiling.

I like the idea of hiding the projector when not in use, especially if you have kids that might accidentally hit it with a projectile. It seems pretty exposed in that location. I wonder if you could build your own retractable cubby for much less $$.

Curious, will your additional 2 bedrooms have egress?

Both bedrooms have egress. We have a walkout, and actually there is a window behind the big screen. I'm on the fence as to whether to remove the window, or do a motorized screen which would allow the window to remain. The window is blocked by the deck stairs that go down to the patio. So it really doesn't provide much of a view. But, removing the window and adding siding will add extra expense.

I'm really stuck conceptually with the screen area. I believe it could really become an excellent focal point and much more could be done to add extra zing, but I just can come up with anything.

I've attached a floorplan.

Awesome design and thought process ... it should turn out great!

I would however like to play devil's advocate for a quick second though and say that having two bedrooms off of a major entertainment area like that is not something that will help resale (especially if you are thinking these bedrooms would be used a children's rooms)

Hi Klipsch,

I don't think that a basement in general (especially considering today's US market) is going to help resale value. I'm sure an argument could be made that it does. But as a moonlighting realtor, it's hit and miss.

I do think having a total of 5 bedrooms rather than 3 may help propel it over other like homes in the area--making it more marketable in general. We also have main floor study which could also be converted to a bedroom, albeit non-conforming at the moment due to lack of closet.

You are right though, I don't imagine that the bedrooms would ever be used as a primary bedroom. Guest bedroom use only.

Based upon my basement design, which has 10ft ceilings in the gameroom area, I'd like to ensure that it's somewhat quiet and noise doesn't carry too much to the floors above. On the flipside, the kitchen is directly above and it has hardwood floors. Right now my kids sound like they're tap dancings on top of my head when they're in the kitchen.

I was wandering what I should search on here to get suggestions or ideas to help tune down the noises going both ways?

good cheaper place to start for sound reduction:

To hide the projector you could do two seperate tray ceilings rather than one large one. Have one over the pool table and one over the "theater" area. Then mount the projector in the tray.

Thanks for the soundproofing link Klipsch.

As far as the double tray, we've definately considered that. So that may be a cheaper alternative to a retractable mount. Would either option limit the ability to change projectors at a later date?

Thanks for the input!

Sure. Projectors not only vary in size, but they also vary in placement of the lens. Some are mounted in the center of the projector while others are closer to the side. You should also run some numbers through a projector calculator to make sure of throw distances.

Yeah I figured as much, nothing ever simple when it comes to the hi-tech world. Probably will end up with a Panny, hope it last awhile. We live in Denver, so the elevation and thin air mean the fan may have to work harder. I know we've run in to some of those problems at work. So I hope an enclosure doesn't shorten the lifespan even more.

Home much room are you going to have from your seating area to your pool table. Any room to put up a halfwall to house your rear speakers and add extra storage? Good luck with the build. Make sure you keep some extra $$$ ready. Something will come up.

Not to hijack the thread but 2 extra bedrooms will help resale in this case
