Has anyone tested the SD-DVD upconversion on this yet?
I picked up the unit today at BB and played around with it for about an hour. I also have the 1200 and 1400. The load time is much better than the older units. I have a denon 4308 so was able to bitstream true hd and hd masters, both were well.

I did setup the network and checked for a firmware update, nothing yet.

The only issue I am having is with the remote control. I have a RCI remote. The problem is that I cannot find the remote control sensor on the unit. The manual says it is to the right of the open/close but I tried to setup my sensor there and no luck with my rci remote.

If there is anyone out there using this type of remote and know where the sensor is, I would appreciate your help. At least on the 1400 you can see it from the front. The 1500 no such luck.

So far I am pleased, other than the sensor.

Those who are complaining about this box decoding dolby true hd to 2.0, please let us know if you've actually got this box and played a blu with that codec.

This is from an actual owner who is right now watching a movie with dolby true hd that IS being bitstreamed to my onkyo which IS decoding to my 5.1 speakers. The AMP does show Dolby True HD 5.1. There is sound coming from ALL 5.1 speakers I have (and no I don't have any DSP matrixing on).

I've mentioned this before but keep in mind that I'm bitstreaming the audio for decoding to the onkyo.

On the remote control thing my onkyo remote control seems to do an ok job controlling the blu player. The only thing the onkyo remote didn't map was the pause button. I wish I had a learning remote control.

Can anyone confirm if they have been able to play BD RE or BD R discs on their unit. I have tried 2 BD RE discs, neither would play. The first would not play on either the 1500 or 1400, a backup of untraceable. The other one was a backup of First Sunday which played fine in the 1400 but not in the 1500.

The owners manual is on Samsung USA 2008/5/13. Searched for p1500
post #126 of 392
According to the owner's manual, the 1500 when bitstreaming in Audiophile mode to get DTS-HD MA can't send the secondary audio track for PIP Bonus View (page 35)!

Is this right? Can someone confirm with a profile 1.1 BD? Why can't this be done?

I don't even need to own a Sammy to tell you this is a limitation of PiP on all players (HD DVD and Blu-Ray). This is why many (including yours truly) prefer decoding in the player. If you want the secondary audio track, you need to have the player decode or down mix.

Bitstream DTS HDMA and Dolby THD: yes
480i resolution via HDMI: no (can do 480i over component )
Upconversion about the same as I have seen from the BD30, S300, LG BH200= average.

When having the 8.8 do the upconversion via the Reon, there is a noticeable difference.

Load times are on par with what has already been mentioned. Pretty strong.

No resume play.

2 channel analog out.

No handshake issues with the 8.8.

a-b comparison with the LG BH200 PQ wise is almost identical for BR.

All I have been able to check so far.

Thanks, allargon! I didn't realize this was the case. My HD-DVD player (Xbox AO) mixes PIP + main audio to 1.5Mbps DTS via optical, so I guess I never noticed.

I think this issue is a red herring. If you are watching something in the PIP mode, why on earth would you need to have hi-rez audio? Presumably, there is commentary or some other audio feature being overlaid on the original film track so I don't think one really needs the highest resolution audio when viewing a 1.1 feature. Seems like a non-issue to me.

I found there is resume play- when you hit stop- hit the menu button (player's menu button, not the disc menu) and scroll up back to video. On some discs it resumes back where you were.

Oops, I didn't check that way. I simply hit stop, and then play. Which started the movie over.

Good point. However, my question is this: If you normally set the player to bitstream for DTS-HD MA for watching the main film, and then choose to watch PIP on the fly, won't you then have to then also go into the player's main menu and switch the output to PCM each time to hear the PIP (and vice-versa)?

This would be more of an annoyance issue than anything else. Sorry if I'm confused here. I'd be very happy to be wrong!

No inputs, but here are the outputs

I promised my self to never buy a Samsung player again but the 1500 is so tempting It has everything I really care about: bitstreams all the audio codecs, fast loading time, low profile, BD-Bonus (I will rarely use it but is there for the next must have tittle) and BD-Live ready (again just in case)and it is relative inexpensive.

Does anyone know if the 1500 uses the same chipset or video decoder as the upcoming Sony 350?

1) It's $348 at Walmart

2) I think the video is excellent- it seems to be a bit sharper then my first generation Philips BDP9000.

Samsung's reputation regardless, I think I'm going to have to take the plunge into BD with player. Right now I just have HD DVD, but I saw a couple BD's on sale at Amazon this morning (Blade Runner and World's Fastest Indian) and for some reason I made an order (along with No Country for Old Men, Ratatiolle, and a pre-order for There Will Be Blood). It was all part of my plan to wait till June for a decently priced 2.0 player but as the day's gone on I have trouble restraining myself.

Um forget all the video and audio crap [j/k], I just want to know if anyone is able to get this thing to display the time of day when it's off?

Seriously, I can't figure out how to enable that. Thought it would have been cool since it has NTP.

Yeah, I know, I musta been one of those guys whose VCR time was always flashing...

Ya but, ya but, ya but, USB and LAN are bidirectional, so they can count as a input .

I am very pleased with the BR video performance. I have used a PS3, S300, Sammy 5000, Denon 2500, Pio 95, and LG BH200.

I didn't do any direct A/B comparisons, but from memory the image from this player held its own with the SA players mentioned above, and slightly better IMO than the PS3.

Just curious as they use two different video solutions...
