I have looked through the receiver manual and searched google but can't find the answer to my problem so hopefully I can get some help from the experts here.

I have a PS3 and an Xbox 360 hooked up to a Sony STR-DG800 receiver via HDMI. I get audio and video thru HDMI from the Xbox 360 but I only get video thru the PS3. I have tried switching cables between the Xbox 360 and the PS3 and also tried switching HDMI inputs in the receiver. Neither made a difference.

In the PS3 I set the audio to HDMI and set the BD/DVD HDMI to Bitstream and Linear PCM. Nothing works. When I hook the PS3 directly to the TV via HDMI it works. So, why does the Xbox 360 work but PS3 doesn't?

I'm confused. The manual implies that the STR-DG800 is HDMI pass through - i.e., if you connect an HDMI source to it, you also need to connect a separate digital audio cable to the receiver in order to get surround sound from your speaker set-up. I say this because of the NOTE at the top of page 30 ("When a playback component connected to this receiver and this receiver connected to the TV by HDMI, the sound is output from the TV speaker only."). Your post OTOH implies that the XBOX is hooked up just with an HDMI cable (no separate digital audio connection). Do you have a surround sound speaker set-up (for example, 5.1) or are you just using the TV's speakers??

I was surprised as well when I hooked up the xbox 360 via HDMI because I knew it the receiver does HDMI passthrough. I have a 5.1 speaker setup and the xbox 360 is hooked up via HDMI only (no optical cable for audio) and the PS3 is hooked up via HDMI but I am not getting any audio. Strange I know and I have been trying to find out if xbox 360 does something different to send audio via HDMI???
