Anderson Cinema Construction begins!!!...slowly.

Well, after few pictures and a hint from Bud, "uh!, hey man, you need to start a thread".... here it is. Of course, the room is a dedicated home theater "man cave", whichever you prefer. It is a blank slate. The HVAC guys will be here tomorrow to install all the ductwork and set the 2-ton unit. I will complete the rest of the wiring for the reccessed lighting, track lighting, and oter lights I plan install. Seems to take a little bit to install 36 reccessed lights and three track lights, and billards lights (to go over the pool table) and fans, light/fan combos in the bathroom and the other other points for power Bud reccommended. So, if I could get away from looking at all the pictures on here and reading about the ways to build a HT I might be able to start on my HT.

Also, we have an area within the HT that will house the A/V rack, DVD/CD storage, popcorn machine andconcession stand.

I will put a laundry list of cables together this week and get that stuff ordered.

Room size: 12' (w) x 16' 3" (l)

So, anything you think I should do or put in the wall before drywall goes up, PLEASE chime in.

By the way, the lighted movie poster box with chasing lights came from a Hollywood Video that closed down here last week.... I could not pass it up for $65.

Here is Mark's (BritinVA) screen wall/shadow box that I was referring to the other day.

That's a pretty good find. I'll need to pay attention when they sell off the fixtures at mine.

Finally after months....and yes more month passing I am finally getting ready to start putting the drywall up and making some progress. You'd think I would have my thoughts together with reading all the posts on the HT builds....and not getting off my rear to go work on mine. It's like watch HGTV all Saturday and beging too tired and lazy to get up and go do those weekend projects.

I do have a question.... The projector mount, what length extension arm..or what should the distance between the ceiling and the projector be?

The ceiling inside the trey (where the projector will be) is: 103"
The distance from the projector to the screen is: 13'
The bottom of the screen is 28" off the floor and the top of the screen is 81.2" off the floor.

I have been putting drywall in the family room, kids playroom, and bathroom...only have the home theater, craft room, and game room to drywall..should be finished by 2015...ha

Bud...help!

Here is what I have been working on..and know I can focus on the home theater.

This is taking way longer than I ever expected.

Finally got the insulation, wiring, and HVAC done. Now we are ready to install drywall.

The insulation is done and ready for drywall.

..and my wiring is...I think... done. I'm sure I forgot a cable or two. I wired for 7.1. HDMI, component cables, cat5, IR extender cable, coax.

Well, I finally started on the drywall in the theater..AND found out quickly that my drywall lift only reaches 8ft. So, I had to make a lift for the lift and worked, but made it very difficult to crank up and move into pace, but finally get first two pieces up.

Drywall lift would only go up 8ft. Had to make a extension for the lift.

Here is a closer look...done with the highest area.

Hmmm, not the same lift I bought. BTW, will be over at Greg's likely on Thursday.

Well, I's sure I bought to from the same guys selling big speakers out of the back of a white unmarked van.

By the way, I bartered with a guy off of craigslist, my generator for drywall finishing. He seems to be doing a good job abd was on time and VERY professional. He is taping, mudding, and sanding (vacumn sanding -no dust..what he states) a playroom, craft room, family room w/ trey ceiling, full bathroom w/ seperate commode room, hallway and two closets for my generator (only had cash offers for the generator of $200-$300)and $370.00. I though it was a good deal and should speed up my ability to finish the home theater.

Hi HTanderson,

Nice build thus far, you've done som nice work. Sorry I didn't notice it before, you had a long period between updates.

That's seems like a great deal that you got there for the drywall and they were on time to boot. Good luck and keep us posted.
Looking good. I saw earlier you had a question about the length of the extension rod on the projector. It's really up to you. Ideally, the best place would be for the lens to be in plane with the middle of the screen, but that would look rediculous in 99% of the installations. Almost all projectors now have lens shift, so you can go much higher without sacrificing picture quality.

I chose to mount mine as high as possible so that it was up and out of the way.

Thanks for the compliments on the build. The drywall finishing on everything other than the home theater will be done by next Monday.

....and your build is very well done. The currved screen you built was awesome. I visit your thread often.

What a compliment... your theater build and thread is awesome. I have been reading your thread since I got into the AVS forum.

On the extension rod for the projector.....think that I will have bottom of the projector line up with the top of the screen. The only thing I don't like about that is you will see it right when you enter the home theater since the door to enter is center on the back wall and the projector would be located below the soffit.

Here is a picture as you enter the home theater room:

ANY, and I mean any suggestions or advice you'd give me about option and-or placement of the projector?

Thanks

Sean

Here is another picture stand about 5ft. from front wall looking at the back wall and door coming into the theater:

...and of couse a picture of the taping and mudding (currently in progress)

Could you put the projector in the rear soffit?
Thanks HTanderson,

As In2photos is suggesting you can certainly try to put the projector in the soffit. I'm doing a soffit/projector bay type set up. I had originally intended to put the projecter on a mount still but with all the lens shift of my projector it was perfect sitting in the bay. The important thing to account for though is ventalation. Similar to others here I installed a duct fan with attic fan thermostat so that it kicks on when needed. I have it vent out to my mechanical room.

You could also rework that soffit to perhaps go out and create an extension just for the projector as a cubby hole/shelf for the projector.

I have been think about reccessing the projector into the soffit. I could move the bracing over to the left or right and add an additional brace. I agree the cooling/ventilation is key. Thanks for the advice Mike.

A BIG concern I have...is that I will have crown moulding with rope lighting about enen with where the lens to be. Of course a projector is of more importance than rope lighting, but would like to have good projector placement AND rope lighting all the way around.

Any ideas?.. or other ideas????

I don't think the rope lighting would affect your PJ output. But if it does, you could always block the output of the rope light in that one small area. Remember that this is the back of the room and since you enter from this location it won't be seen much.

You could also end the crown short of reaching the PJ (see this thread).

If you really want to get nuts you could have two circuits for rope light (one that spans the entire room sans the PJ area and one for the PJ area), with one that turns completely off when the PJ is on!

My thought exactly... I saw Bud's (chinadog) projector cover. I could do a version of that, but not the cover just recess the projector.

Bud will be next door on Thursday (referred my neighbor to Bud for professional A/V wiring on his HT). Bud said he'd stop by ..and I'll get his ideas too.

Thanks again.... if you or anyone else has other ideas... I could use the help.. especially before I drywall the soffit this week.

Great minds think alike. I was bouncing that idea around too.

The soffit it 11.5in. tall and 25in. deep.

...any other ideas on projector placement or install ideas????

Thanks

I think I may go with a ceiling mount, probably a Chief mount and carry the crown moulding a rope lighting all the way around.

But if there are other thoughts or recommendations I am open and grateful.

Thanks

Hey Sean,

Nice meeting you the other night.
If you haven't finished hanging drywall on the ceiling...you could always build a new base (with casters) to achieve the extra 1 -2 foot needed to safely lift drywall into place.
Sean,

I came by on Saturday morning to take some pictures of Greg's wiring and stopped by your place around 10:30, but no answer. We'll be back shortly after his drywall. Will keep you posted.

Another GA build!
First, everything looks awesome!

If you haven't solved the projector issue... Could you build an extension tray for the projector. Meaning you could have part of the projector in the soffit and part of it on the tray extending out a few inches or feet from the soffit. That would allow the rope light to be installed and provide a cover for it so it wouldn't impact the projector's performance.

Nice to see another Atlanta area build as well. Has there ever been a meet set up for Atlanta? I think I'm just up the 400 a little ways, in Cumming.

It was great to meet you the other evening at Greg's house. Y'all do a great job with home theater builds based on your HT, Bud's HT...and the other one (the one with the green walls.

I think Greg should go with the Panasonic AE3000U. I would have gone with that one if I wasn't so darn impatient to order my projector that now sits in a box for 8 months.

Take care

I had to attend a class on Saturday and my wife had the kids at Cheerleading. Yes, a drive class.....got a few speeding tickets in the Hummer...had to take the class. By the way, got a 100% on the test. Which is usually how fast I was going when I got the tickets.

I'll should be around when you come back to finshing Greg's theater after the drywall. They are still over there hanging drywall at 9:40 p.m.

Well, good idea... I'm still trying to make my decision on the mount options for the projector. I appreciate the idea and may go with that... I'm looking at what others have done on the forum to make sure I have looked at all options before I decide.

By the way, thanks for the compliment.

Probably has been a few, I'd like to have one once it warms up some, maybe April/May timeframe.

Yep!... it's Saturday, and time to go buy MORE sheetrock, haul sheetrock, then stagger down the hill and hopefully make it into the basement without falling down the hill, and finally set it down in it's place until I can hang it!

...also, picked up a structured wiring panel to hand so I can hang the sheetrock up in the other closet.

..and hang it right there.
