Heads for the folks in the San Diego, SF Bay or LA area, BB added the 40W4100 to their web site, I see some of the stores in the above areas actually show that they have the sets in the stores for pickup. Some stores I saw on the website showing in stock are:

Ok, guys, I am really in need to buy one 46" LCD. How long until the 46W4100 or the 46V4100 are released. I am in a rush because the Euro Cup 2008 is starting in 26 days!! Fox Soccer channel and GoalTV are SD only unfortunately. BTW which tv will handle best SD -- A550, W4100, or V4100?

If the 46W4100 or the 46V4100 don;t come out soon, before the Euro Cup, is it a mistake to buy a 46W3000?

I pulled up the owner's manual online. The early info suggested this model had a USB port to view photos, but the owner's manual suggests otherwise.

hi all,

Just saw this TV in action at BB in Norwalk, CT. It was the 40" W and was right below the 40 inch Samsung A650 on the wall. At first I thought it was the V, but then I saw it looked different than the V I have at home. The Sony name lit up and I don't remember that on my V. So upon further inspection I saw it was the W.

Unfortunately for you guys, I am a bit of a newb so I can't do any in depth comparison of the 650 and W. I only looked at them for about 10 minutes, the W seemed brighter and seemed to have more "pop", but I couldn't tweak either TV, it's very possible someone could have tweaked the Sammy or put in Standard or Movie mode and it was obvious the Sony was in Vivid "torch mode".

Other than that, the pictures seemed quite similar. The Sammy's color accuracy seemed better. The green on trees looked more natural, whereas the W had a more limey bright green, but again that could be contributed to the settings- I wish I had a remote to play around with!!

Black levels seemed similar, with the nod probably going to the Sammy here but almost too close to call. Hopefully someone with more A/V knowledge and ability to tweak settings will be able to also see both in action and report back.

If anyone has any questions, I'll be going back to that Best Buy either today or tomorrow and can check anything out for you.

thanks for the impressions. sounds like the differences you're describing are just due to the settings and the edge in black level is probably due to the glossy screen. but overall, it seems like the two are pretty close, which is what I expected. thanks again.

I can see that there's only 3 stores in my area that are carrying it out of the possible 6 around town. So, I take it that the W4100 is only in limited markets. How long until we expect the W4100 on a more widespread basis?

Well I did it. The price of the 52W4100 crashed so much over the last few days I placed my order. Got a 52W4100 on the way for cheaper then I cold have purchased a 52W3000 for. (I guess that is legal...no price numbers.)

After watching the prices collasp on Nextag I went with PCNation. Spoke with them today on the phone & they processed my order with no sales pitches. So far so good.

Lemme tell you one thing. 52W4100 is not worth it. Unless it costs less than 2 K.

I just did a good comparison b/w 52w4100, 52w3000, 52bxr4 and Samsung LN52AA650 and that samsung beats Sony in every aspect except the glossy screen. I'm a BIG fan of sony and still have my 10 year old 27 inch WEGA flatscreen. I was all ready to buy sony until I heard about samsung 6 series last week.

Not sure what is wrong with 52w4100. It's just inferior in terms of brightness, color, contrast and blacks. 120 HZ is not done right either. Samsung had no judder or triple motion blurring issues compared to XBR4.

My only concern with Samsung is long term reliability.

wow, it sounds terrible by how you described it. how was it compared to the W3000 and the xbr4? did you get a chance to adjust the picture settings? what type of feed/source did they have (SD/HD)? how were the 120hz on the W4100? same as the xbr4? did you see it at bestbuy? thanks for the info.

Not bestbuy.

Butterflyphoto in NJ.
Before that I went to sonystyle in Paramus, NJ and was so disappointed with 52w4100. it looked pale compared to the old sony 46w series next to it.

Luckily I had a chance to compare it to A650 and XBR. In fact a650 was better in both picture and 120Hz handling.

I got soo many sonystyle points I can use to buy it ( Eventhough it costs around 3K) , i don't think I'm going for it. I guess sony lost it with w4100. May be because of 8bit instead of 10bit ??


Infact I was all set to buy 52w3000 or 52xbr4 but didn't buy because I was told to wait for 4100. Good that I didn't buy.

I doubt 8 bit had something to do with it since there aren't a whole lot of 10bit content out there to take advantage of. I wouldn't rush to any hasty conclusions about the W4100 if I were you without seeing it with the proper calibration and a good source since there are many factors that can mislead you into thinking that that's all the TV can do.

my advice is to try to get another look at it with the proper picture settings. I suspect the W4100's picture mode might be in cinema or standard mode instead of the vivid or torch mode, which makes it look dull, pale, and dark compared to its counterparts. because from looking at the specs and a few pictures that owners posted, there's no way that the W4100 wouldn't even look as good as the old W3000.

4100 was in Vivid mode. Both at sonystyle and butterflyphoto. The one at butterflyphoto was pre-calibrated according to the sales guy.

I don't think we should even compare 4100 and 650. They definitely are not in the same class. May be Z4100 and A650. We will have to wait.

The 650 Sammys out of the box are in Standard mode, not Dynamic, which was a nice change up for Sammy.

Look at the bright side, tho, at least Sony knew to price the W4100 accordingly, since the PQ is almost like the A550, yet the features were almost as impressive as the A650.

Just about everybody seems to like the PQ on the A650. Some people don't like the A650 remote but maybe that's no big deal. But they also say the sound on the A650 is poor when used stand alone (not connected to home theater). PQ is key though! We'll see soon enough if the Sony W4100's picture quality is inferior to the Samsung A650, even though the W4100 came out a few months after the A650.

I'm still holding out hope that the Z4100 will be the best bang for the buck overall. It's just one step below an XBR, yet, it'll probably be Sony's biggest seller for the feature to price ratio.

yep. we'll see soon enough, but so far, it's pretty hard to tell because its only just been release and and there's virtually no W owners to speak of, and yet some people are already claiming that the W4100 is done for . I guess being a propective buyer, I'll have to see it in person myself to see how it stacks up against the 650, no duh. and a David katzmaier review help too.

I ordered the xbr5 from a box house in NY and when I called at their request to confirm the order they said the 52" 24100pks were available and suggested I switch. I read this string and there is no place where I live where I can compare the two. Any thoughts? Is this hype or a switch to a more profitable item for them. Price they are offering to me is abt the same.

Question: I have a new 40XBR4 that is still within my 30 day return. Love my new Sony and am not even considering the Samsung 650 because of too many QC issues and glossy screen.

So....Is the W4100 better than the XBR4? Shoud I exchange for the new W4100? The only thing I don't like about the XBR4 is the fan noise issue, which is not that big of deal. (But is still there, and shouldn't be...)

When calibrated properly watching a Blu ray I cant imagine there will be much difference between the sammy 650 and the Sony W4100. I saw the sammy at BB, and it was an IMPRESSIVE PQ.....but you gotta take the damn shiny screen that comes with it. I am not doing that.

I know why the W4100 looks dark now even in vivid mode, it's due to the light sensor or energy savings thingi, making it look really dark so that's why it didn't look as bright as the others. so that's probably what happened in this case when you saw it.

CC has added the 46 and 52 W4100, but not the 40, to their website. Price listed looks like MSRP.
