Sony W4100 series thread - Page 94

This is semi-related to carbon's question. I got a new laptop that has HDMI out, I set the laptop to only display on the 5100 so I can use the laptop as a HTPC frontend. When I got everything up and running, I noticed the color temperature was really blue, so I checked the settings and the TV was in PC Input mode; leaving temperature and color adjustments greyed. I've used other computers hooked up to my TV and they've never switched the TV into PC Input, but the laptop just will not get out of this mode. How do I go about switching the TV out of this mode?

Yep... I use the 3725 on my 52W4100. Same mount except I think some parts are aluminium instead of steel.

The only aspect of this mount that gives me pause is it's depth. A closer fit to the wall is always better. But on those occasions when I fiddle with the connections, or temporarily hook up up a camcorder, digital camera, laptop, PS2 or 3, etc., (about every other month), I am grateful for the easy access to the side and rear of the panel. I actually just upgraded the firmware this past weekend and was reaaly glad I could pull out the TV to access the USB port so easily.

Hello everyone!

I have the 52" w4100... Has anyone had problems with their TV turning on and off by itself?

This started happening to my set last night. I've done some google'ing and haven't had much luck with a fix...

Go back to this post and read the next three. Should be pretty self explanatory.

Been a while since I posted on these forums....

I bouught the 52 inch back in March of last year and have thoroughly happy with it, but this morning I woke up with a scare.

The best way I could describe it is it looks like a "wave" from left to right over the picture when you switch inputs and the picture is blacked out and distorted on the right side. It looks almost like the picture is refreshing in slow motion. I turned it off and on again, and nothing. Finally I unplugged it and seems like it's back to normal, but now I'm freaked out and waiting for it to happen again.

I've seen some threads about display issues with this TV. My sony 1 year warranty is over, and my credit card company said they only cover 90 days after purchase.

Were there any recent firmware updates that fixed anything? I did a couple of updates when I first got the TV, but none for a while now...

Anyone out there?

As far as I know there have been no more updates. Had there been, it would have been done automatically by my set since it is always connected to an antenna and updates are sent out via a PBS channel. Last update my set received was on 5-20-09. I have checked with my former employer (I am retired now) which is an authorized Sony Service Center, and there have been no more updates since. Seems Sony has moved on to support newer models.

I've heard of more LCD panel problems with the 52" model. I have a 40". No problems.

So here is my story. I purchased the 52w4100 from Amazon in Dec/08. Loved it initially. In January, I began experiencing intermittant red highlights throughout the picture on every input even when nothing was plugged in. Tried multiple outlets without improvement. I then called Sony and service reps came out 3 times and could not correct problem. The even replaced the 'panel.'

I was offered a lesser model (V series) for $300 or a refurbished 52w4100 in June/09. With stubbornness, I refused as I did not want the lesser model and didn't want a used model. At the time the frequency seemed to be less then before so I did nothing. Unfortunately, for the last two months, the problem has accelerated and now it is occurring at an unbearable rate. I upgraded the software in the hope this would improve it and, holy crap, the redness went haywire when the usb device was plugged in the dmex port.

Sony said 'sorry, you're now out of warrenty.' The did offer a 55ex710 for $1325. Doesn't seem worth it. Any questions? Any ideas?

I've seen your response in the other locked thread.... I suggest you contact authorised Sony service department and tell them exactly what I wrote in the other thread. Explain the previous repair history as well and demand someone with good experience to come and fix the TV... now that I know what demux port is (thanks) I am pretty sure there's problem with local +5V regulation on the AV processor board (this USB port most likely provides a fair bit of current at +5V DC for external units)... or there might be serial USB comms issues with one of the IC's that handle this job.... anyway, it looks like AV processor board fault... the tec who comes to visit you to fix the TV should check the supply rails that are coming from the power supply as well (the AV processor board section in question may have its own regulator and/or decoupling circuit on the power supply board – unlikely, but possible)

Good luck,
Boky

I just remembered that there was a documented problem with USB port on one of the Sony models...so ask service department to search Sony database for know issues.

Thank you very much for the response. I did have some more questions, etc., though, before I call Sony.

I am out of warranty (and will ask about the port issues to see if that puts me back in the realm of extended warranties) at this time. Sony will respond by giving me the number of a tech to call who will charge a fee just to come out. They had already stated that I am out of warranty now and, even if the problem had begun at that time, there is nothing they can do. They had already made an offer to replace the TV last year, and I refused.

I would like to know, before I start paying for home service calls, if the particular problem you mention is an expensive one to fix and/or would require new part replacements and costs that would outweigh just simply buying a new TV.

If you live near L.A., maybe I could just pay you.

I live in Sydney and do a lot of high end Hi-Fi modifications for hobby (and extra cash)... I worked in service department (long time ago....), Hi-Fi equipment and high power professional audio...

You could expect an hourly rate of around $100; they will include travel time in this most likely... try to get a flat call-out rate and flat rate for an estimate. The fault finding and estimation of the repair could cost you around 200 - 300. The AV processor board is probably around 200. I think you'll end-up paying between 400 - 600.

Good luck,
Boky

I posted this in the calibration thread too - so I am looking for advice from wherevr I can get it.

Guys, its been a while since I visited this thread. Unfortunately, I am having an issue with my TV. On start up my TV has a thin purple vertical line running down about an inch from the right side. The line eventually disappears (after about 30 min). Have you heard of this issue before and could you tell me what it could mean? Thank you and I hope someone still reads this thread ...

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UpdateLogic

"UpdateTV
UpdateTV is a multipath worldwide distribution system which allows digital televisions to automatically receive firmware upgrades and software patches sent out via terrestrial broadcast, digital cable networks, and the Internet. The network and technology has been under development by UpdateLogic since 2004, was completed in 2006, first shipped in TV sets in 2008 by Sony Electronics, and is now shipped in TVs from Sanyo and others.

In the terrestrial case, the UpdateTV solution which works within the ATSC A/97 (Software Data Download Service, or SDDS) protocol, will be datacast by National Datacast on PBS TV stations across the United States. Major cable operators are required by contract to transmit the data such that the software upgrades are also passed to their customers. UpdateLogic works with content delivery network providers, or Internet service providers, to download the software update(s) to connected devices."

My TV is dead. It actually died a while back, but I just recently logged in to see if there was any new info on this thread.

I was 2 weeks out of warranty when I called Sony. They said that if I fronted the cost for a guy to come out and give me an estimate, they would "take care of it". I asked what that meant, but they never gave a straight answer. I called back a few hours later and the person I talked to said they had no notes regarding anyone saying they'd "take care of it".

My dead TV is still sitting in my extra room collecting dust.

I suggest you call an independent servicer that is authorized for Sony so they will know the set and have access to service bulletins, and get an estimate for repair. Could be something relatively inexpensive to fix like a power supply issue.

My set is about to roll over 15,000 hours of use 3 years old next May, is powered on about 16 hours a day. So far zero problems.

I guess that means mine will last at least 15 years. Oh well, one can hope.

Has anybody used this tv for an htpc setup winTh windows 7? I have been using a Mac mini and everything was fine, but just got a windows 7 based htpc with ion 2 and now on 1080p 60 hz setting the tv is detected as a monitor, not a tv, I.e. The settings I can select are limited, such as I dint get vivid, cinema etc colour option i only get video and text. This also causes videocplayback issues.

Additionally does anybody know the detailed settings for this tv if i want to set up a custom resolution I.e. Vertical horizontal sync, etc.

This happened to me a while back, not sure what caused it or what fixed the problem, sorry.

I don't know anything about the Ion, but the solution for ATI cards is to go DVI(card)->HDMI(TV), or to use a plain passthrough DVI/HDMI adapter. The ones that come with the cards are reported not to work. For Nvidia cards, there was no solution before the 256.xx (or thereabouts) driver. Now you need to go to the Nvidia control panel, "Display / Adjust desktop color settings / Content type reported to the display" and set it to "Full-screen videos". These methods will cause the cards to keep the Sony TV in 1080p at all times, which is really necessary if you watch TV in Media Center, as this "PC/HDTV Timing Bug" interacts really badly with the Media Center "29/59 Hz" aka "1080i/p" "Frame Rate Bug".

I use this TV with my Win7 x64 PC with an nVidia-based vid card with no problems. I'm not home right now so I can't give you specifics but if you're interested I'd be more than happy to post my PC and TV vid settings when I get a chance. Also, if it makes any difference, I do run the PC output at 1080/24 instead of 1080/60 without any issues.

Does the 52W4100 support audio return channel (ARC) via it's HDMI ports? My new AV receiver supports this and now I'm wondering if I can get rid of the optical audio cable from the TV to the receiver. Thanks.
Audio Return Channel ("ARC") is a feature introduced with the HDMI 1.4 specification. Sony's W4100 implements the HDMI 1.3 specification; and therefore will not support ARC.
Yes, I figured out that it doesn't with some trial and error once I got my entertainment center apart and could access the cables easier. Oh well, plenty of room in the wall to run the optical audio cable. Just waiting for my Powerbridge to arrive.
