The LED engine is supposed to last "as long as the set" (quote from Samsung's site; I've seen a 20,000 hr. average cited for some sets) - meaning there shouldn't be any user-serviceable parts in the TV. It's also supposed to give slightly better contrast and color distribution from what I understand.

I'd say go for it! I have the 56" version and am very happy. 1K for 50" of 1080P HDTV is a pretty sweet deal!

I can get the Samsung HL-T5089 LED or the HL50A650 LAMP each for $1299. The question is should I go with the LED version from the 2007 line or the Lamp version from the 2008 line? I think most specs are the same other than the LED model has a 10,000:1 contract and the lamp has 2500:1. I know but have had many problems unique to each model.

Why did they not make the 2008 version with the LED Tech??

That scares me. Why would they go back to lamps???

They do have led 2008 models. They are the 7 series (750 in the model name). They just offer both versions - bulb and LED.

The DLP sets are plenty bright - as bright or brighter than any LCD I've seen. In a room with low light you will definitely want to tone down the brightness/contrast to avoid eyestrain/headaches as well as minimize SSE on these sets.

As mentioned above, they do still have LED models - just in 61" and 67" sizes now (the "750" series). Others have made the observation that 50" and 56" LED sets aren't the moneymakers for Samsung that they used to be now that LCDs and Plasmas of comparable sizes are starting to come down in price; one way to counter that is to do things cheaper (i.e., offer 56" and 61" sets with bulbs; I don't think they are going to offer the 50" set anymore) or do things bigger (i.e., a 67" set - and maybe bigger, is there a 72" LED set planned?) - looks to me like Samsung is trying to do both and maximize their market share.
