I've had speaker buzz on Dolby Digital sources with my 606 from the get go. For me, turning off Dynamic EQ totally eliminates the buzz. I took it in to Onkyo Australia and they applied the "fix" and all firmware updates and when it came back home it still buzzed.
I'm very happy with the amp otherwise so I'm not too worried about it, but I'd still like to get to the bottom of the problem so I started mucking around with the Audyssey settings in Speaker Configuration to see if that might make a difference, and this morning I made an interesting discovery: if I tell the amp I have a subwoofer (I don't), the buzz completely disappears, even with Dynamic EQ enabled.
Now, the tech who did the repair on my amp did say the fix he'd applied was primarily a fix for a subwoofer problem, so I figure the two things are connected. And now I'm wondering if others who are experiencing speaker buzz are running a subwoofer or not.
I'm running a simple two-speaker set up - two large Richters, left and right - and I'm starting to think that's why I'm getting the buzz. The 606 is made for a lot more than two speakers, and I'm assuming most people are running 5.1 or even 7.1 set ups.
Anyway, if you're having the same problem, try it and see if the buzz disappears.

I need some serious help. I have very little knowledge of AV so please be kind
I don't know why I purchased this receiver...maybe convenience of not running the cables through the wall?!?!
I have:
Philips 52" LCD 120hz with 4 HDMI, SPDIF out, etc
Onkyo SR606
Philips HTS6600 Ambisound (DVD player with 2.1 speaker) HDMI
Xbox 360 HDMI
HTPC HDMI

I have connected Cable/Xbox360/HTPC/Philips DVD home theater to HDMI IN ---> HDMI OUT to 52" LCD Philips.

Everything works fine but the speakers. I would like to utilize the Philips ambisound speakers from the DVD home theater. Currently Cable/Xbox/etc HDMI audio out gives to the TV speaker. I tried Zone2 out to AudioIN aux1 on my 2.1 ambisound but no sound. I have setup the zone2 ACT enabled, powertv, tvcontrol, all enabled without any luck. Why does it not work?

Also, should I run a SPDIF from my TV to 2.1 ambisound? What options do I have? Thank you in advance.

EDIT: I can only control the volume through my TV remote, since the audio is being processed through HDMI, shouldn't the 606 remote also affect the volume? confused...

what is bi-amping? And can I bi-amp if I'm only using a 5.1 setup instead of all 7 channels? How do you bi-amp on a 606 if it is possible?

You might be able to run SPDIF from your TV to your Ambisound. It depends on your TV. Otherwise you would need to connect all your sources with stereo analog cables in addition to HDMI, then connect the TAPE out on your receiver to the stereo inputs on your Ambisound.

With regard to the volume control, if you're sending HDMI audio to your TV, then as you discovered you control the volume on your TV, not on your receiver. That's just the way it works.

Check the manual or spec sheet for your front speakers to see if they can be bi-amped (they'll have 4 binding posts on the back instead of 2, connected with jumpers). If they can and you want to go for it, look it up in the 606 manual. More connections means more chances for error, so take your time and follow the instructions very carefully.

What exactly is the power control on and off when the receiver in in standby?

I get the buzz with a sub. I am running a 5.1 setup. Turning off Dynamic EQ reduces it somewhat but it's still there. Strange thing is there was vitually no buzz until I ran the Audyssey Auto setup. No buzz at all on analog inputs or when pausing a Dolby Digital DVD. As soon as the Dolby soundtrack is being fed to the unit the background buzz begins. It is very hard to detect in actual use unless you have a super quiet passage in a movie, and the volume cranked to 60 and above. (I have a large 16 x 27 carpeted room with 10 foot ceilings so I tend to have the volume at 54-60 on action movies) After trying the Denon 789 which had no buzz but much worse overall sound quality, and horrid control layout, I have decided to keep the 606 in spite of the buzz. I get the buzz from any digital source including via optical cable. I wonder if they all buzz and some people just never crank it loud enough to hear it? If you pause a movie and listen for it you won't hear it, unless you are using a Blu-ray disc with an uncompressed (no Dolby or DTS) soundtrack. You will hear the buzz when you pause the movie on those. It would be great if Onkyo ever finds a cure for this issue though. Then we would have an amazing product for the price paid.

This is really frustrating. I've posted in HTPC forum as well, but maybe others here have a similar configuration...

Any comments on things to try or suggestions to test would be most welcome.

I have 3 ripped BluRay discs to my Hard drive, 3 converted to .mkv, a ton of 1080p .mov apple movie trailers, and some .avi videos downloaded from the web.

With HDMI from HTPC (ATI 3850) -> TV (Panny 800U):
BD rips only play in PowerDVD, did not expect them to play in VMC. All HD .mkv files play perfectly in VMC x64, as well as all 1080p .mov apple movie trailers, and all other videos (.avi) that I have downloaded at some point.

With HDMI from HTPC (ATI 3850) -> Onkyo 606 HDMI1 -> TV:
The ripped BDs play perfectly in PowerDVD 8. All of my 1080p apple movie trailers and all .avi videos also play perfectly in PowerDVD 8.

Here comes the problem - only 1 of my HD .mkv files play perfectly in VMC. The other 2 play with this weird flashing effect. In addition all 1080p .mov trailers have the flashing effect, as well as all other videos (.avi).

I do not see how it is possible that some video formats will not play correctly in VMC when all that is changed is throwing the Onkyo 606 into the loop.

I appreciate your help Kplex.
My TV has SPDIF out so I'll try doing that...
I am just wondering why Zone2 out to my speaker L/R audio in didn't work.

I also have WS100 with polk csi center speaker + Polk sub, should I go with this instead of Philips HTS6600?
Check and make sure you havev Zone 2 set to "active" in the set up menu. I think that's under the Hardware items, or maybe Misc.

Zone 2 output only works with stereo analog inputs. I'm not familiar with a WS100, but any speakers connected directly to your receiver are going to be a lot easier to work with than the Ambisound.

Power Control is a set-up menu item. It allows HDMI to feed to your TV speakers if the receiver is off. I watch a lot of TV with thereceiver off, so I prefer this setting (even though it burns about 10 cents a day power). If you have it off you must turn on the receiver to watch TV.

I have them all active and on and it does not zone2 out to my ambisound.
I think kplex is right...it only works through stereo analog input. wasted 4 hrs lastnight when it could've been easily answered here
I'll just move my ambisound to my bedroom lcd or try SPDIF output to ambisound.

I plan on power control off and TV on with receiver off utilizing TV speaker.
I'll turn on the receiver when I want the WS100 + CSi + polk sub.

with TV sound on, will it output sound to both TV and speakers connected to the receiver?

Well, it would be better for the fine folks at Oppo!!

Seriously, chips should function the same but in the real world a lot depends on how that chip's functionality is used in the overall design of the device. A good implementation of a poor chip can be better than a poor implementation of a better device.

What is my best bet for a reciever for the TV that I have...I love to watch sports and play alot of Call of Duty 4 on my PS3. I was looking at this Onkyo TX-SR606 series and thought it was the best bang for my buck. I am not going to go spend more than $500 on a receiver. Any advice. Thanks.
thanks for the response, i have my ps3 as my bd player .would this be why its not registering the signal as a dolby? all im getting when i have a movie on and hit the audio button is "Not Available" on the onkyo screen....

A couple of questions:

1) Does the 606 have an automatic volume control to adjust from loud Ads on TV versus nrmal programming?

2) I believe that lip sync isn't automatic and needs to be done manually?

Thanks
1) No, I still get some loud commercials and channels
2) I've had no lip sync problems with my 606 (as opposed to a few on my 805)

Oh Drats! re volume issue as this is so so annoying these days. Yamaha 663 apparently has this feature....but Yamaha has only 2 HDMI inputs.

Alan, it might be worthwhile if you could get Onkyo service to take a look at it and apply the fix. It just might work for you. It's supposed to. The only problem is being without the amp. And unplugging all those damn cables:-)

I didn't know they had a known fix for this issue. I think they need to come up with one though, although I can live with it as is if I have to.

Hi folks, new 606 owner here.

Im having some difficulties getting the HDMI switching to work properly. I have a Samsung LN4671F, the Onkyo 606 , and a Scientific Atlantic Explorer 5250 HDC STB. Basically what is happening is that when I turn on the TV/STB it takes a very long time (sometimes a 1 minute +) for the TV to find the signal. When it does the cable box says that it doesnt support HDCP and I get a flickering of the picture and popping noises from the speakers. Any ideas?

Do you have any better luck leaving the STB on all the time? You're likely having to wait for both the tv and the stb to boot and generate a signal. Leaving the box on might help with this.

HI aydu, that would be a possible solution, but I still get flickering/popping.

Ok so just brought home the new receiver. Plugged everything in and the first time i fire up the cable box (Motorola HD DVR from Comcast) I get a message saying that the set top box does not support content protected switches (or something like that) please switch to the component outputs. I am using DVI out of the cable box to HDMI into the receiver....any advise?

I've been watching all the talk on the 606, pulled the trigger tonight. You might want to check on Ecost, seems like the price has dropped a little... http://www.ecost.com/Detail/Receiver.../41351501.aspx

No reference in the vendor about the receiver being refurb. I know a lot of people have had issues with vendor, but my few transactions with them have always been succesful.

That is almost a to good to be true price. That is 100$ cheaper than i paid a month ago with the C.C. 10% coupon, even with the shipping. This receiver is a no brainer at that price.
Heads up, according to Onkyo, Ecost.com is only authorized to sell refurbished units. All of their other receivers mention being refurbished although this one doesn't. The mode, though, is TX-SR606 B, take it for what its worth...
