Hey guys, question here...

First off, here's the relevant information about my computer setup:
Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR606
Monitor: Dell 2407WFP revision A02 LCD (HDCP compliant)
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX (latest drivers)

Video card is DVI connected to HDMI input 1 with a straight DVI to HDMI cable, and the monitor is connected to the HDMI output with an HDMI to DVI straight cable (same cables for both connections).

I have a Blu-ray drive in my computer, and whenever I try to play a Blu-ray movie through PowerDVD 8 Ultra or WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray, both programs fail to recognize my monitor as an HDCP monitor. When I disconnect my monitor from the TX-SR606 and go straight from the video card's DVI port to the monitor's DVI port without using the TX-SR606, HDCP is recognized and Blu-ray titles play effortlessly. There seems to be a problem with the TX-SR606 not being able to pass along the HDCP token to the monitor from the video card and/or vise-versa. Does anybody know what's going on? The fact that two different software players have told me the same thing makes me think that the TX-SR606 is to blame.

I know the 606 is a newer receiver, but I checked for firmware updates from Onkyo's website and they didn't have anything. Do you think it's worth it to e-mail them about this?

Thanks for any help.

Hey guys, need a little help with my new 606. I can't get it to work with my HD cable box (SA 8300HD) through HDMI. My blu ray player works fine over HDMI (fortunately no hums or hisses as some have reported) so I'm happy about that. But when I try and watch TV the HDMI logo just blinks on the Onkyo and it doens't want to sync. I had the same problem when I first set up my 605 with this cable box, but I did something and got it to work. Anyone have any suggestions?
FYI..the 606 has dropped into the low $340s now on Amazon. Give it a couple more days..might be back to $326 again.

I am a new Onkyo TX-SR606 owner. I actually bought a factory refurbished model for $299 and it works perfectly and looks brand new (1-year factory warranty).

I want to ask other owners if I can connect my amp to a Nintendo WII via component cables (monoprice.com) and then rely on the HDMI connection between the amp and my TV to upscale the signal. Will this work? I'd like to think it would, but I'm not so sure.

In the Game Console section of the manual (p. 29), it states that if I use component connections from the game console to the amp, I MUST use component connections between the TV and amp. Has anyone else found this to be true or does the HDMI connection do the job?

Thanks for your help!

It's been great so far. I've done a bit of testing with a few HD DVDs (Bourne Ultimatum, Pan's Labyrinth, & The Matrix Reloaded) and my Xbox 360 (GTA IV). Even my crappy speakers sound great. I can't wait to get home so I can put it through its paces a little more!

Here's what I'm running.

Display

-Sony KDS-60A3000

Speakers

-I'm running 7.1 with my Onkyo HTIB speakers (These will be next in line for an upgrade)

Inputs

-Toshiba HD-A2 (HDMI)
-Xbox 360 (HDMI)
-PS3 (HDMI)
-Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD DVR (HDMI)
-Nintendo Wii (Component)

I'll be happy to answer questions, but I can't guarantee a speedy response as I work a lot.

Do you connect your WII to the amp via component cables? If so, how do you connect the amp to the TV? The manual states that if you connect a game console to the amp via component cables you MUST connect the TV to the amp the same way. is this true?

Do you have to also connect the TV to the amp via component cables to run the Wii? Or, can the amp-tv connection be HDMI?

I've had a TX-SR606 for several months but have hit a problem. Not sure if it's a fault with the box or a setup issue. Looking for some suggestions on my current diagnosis before I send the unit back.

I have the following connections...

DVD player via HDMI 1 mapped to DVD input selector
Audio via coax digital
Cable Box via Component 2 mapped to Cable/Sat input selector
Audio via optical digital
Camcorder via Aux (Composite)

HDMI output to Plasma TV
HDMI output configured to 720p.

Up until last week everything worked fine with that configuration. The cable box and camcorder were upconverted to HDMI. On screen menus also worked fine.

While I was I was on the road for a week the video from the Cable box disappeared from the monitor, though DVD was fine. Maybe someone pressed some buttons randomly - we have such people in our household - details withheld to preserve domestic harmony .

Since returning have tried to troubleshoot. DVD through the Onkyo is fine. No problems with the cable box itself - tested direct connection to the TV via component: works fine. Camcorder via Aux also displays no Video - though audio is fine. On screen displays from the Onkyo don't work either.

My suspicion is that all conversion to HDMI (composite, component and on screen display) has failed, but wanted to check the wisdom available here if I'm forgetting any possible setup options that might affect this. Any ideas?

Thanks

I just recently purchased a TX-SR606 from Amazon $325 shipped.

I have read most of this post in regards to a slight hum when using HDMI sources. After I have installed my unit, I am also getting a slight hum. For me, all of my sources are HDMI (which is why I purchased the unit).

However, unlike most who have the hum with PS3 or coming out from all of their speakers, my hum is coming out of the sub-woofer specifically. (Polk Audio RM6750).

Anyone else getting a hum from their sub-woofer? Any suggestions on how to configure / eliminate the noise?

Page 22 of your manual should have the video signal flow chart showing component to HDMI. I have a Wii connected via compoenet and it outputs via HDMI fine. Page 102 also has the video reolution chart that also shows componenet input resolutions mapped to the supported HDMI resolutions (up to 1080i)

I don not have anything on page 29 that states anything close to "that if I you use component connections from the game console to the amp, you MUST use component connections between the TV and amp. ". So unless something has changed with the model you should be fine.

I think PeterV66 was referring to the words "If you use connection A, you must connect the AV receiver to your TV with the same type of connection." A here meaning a component connection. (Those words are still in the version of the manual currently on the Onkyo website TX-SR606_En_A_Rev1.pdf).

There are similar words for any of the input connections described in the manual - which is actually contradictory with itself. As kemac points out the unit converts Component to HDMI. I guess the manual is partially true in that each connection type must be passed on to the TV through the same type - or HDMI...

... that is unless you hit the problem I described a couple of posts ago .

Don't know if this will help, but I had similar problems with the SA 8300HD when I first connected it to my 606. I had to reboot the SA box (pulled the power cord). After that, it came up fine. Also, make sure that in the settings for the cable box, you have everything set to HDMI. If this does not work, you can contact Onkyo support. I have found, though, that they are rather slow in responding.

The only thing I can think off is to verify comp2 is still mapped to cable/Sat, maybe try comp1 to see if that makes a difference? Or try another device connected to comp2.

I would also try a factory reset and reconfig everything as a last resort before sending it in.

Hello, folks. I just picked up a PS3, mainly for watching blu ray movies, and a 606 receiver. I'm really liking both so far. The sound is better across the board, not just when I'm watching a blu ray movie.

I know that the PS3 handles the decoding on its end, so I won't see DD HD or DTS HD displayed on the receiver. When I'm watching a blu ray movie with HD sound, I'm seeing "pcm mulitchannel hdmi" above DVD (I have the PS3 connected to the DVD input on the 606), which I think is what I'm supposed to be seeing.

I can still scroll through various listening modes on the receiver when using a blu ray or PS3 disk, though (mulitch, all ch, etc). What listening mode should I be using for the best sound? I'm assuming I should have it on multich, but just wanted to confirm this. Also, does it make any difference whether the PS3 is connected to the DVD input or the Game/ TV input on the 606?

Thanks,
MarcellusT

I know it will be a pain but just undo/redo all connections. Then you will know for sure.

Just leave it on multichan. if you want to be sure you are hearing hd audio then hit the display button on your ps "tres" (ha ha) and it should display whatever audio format you have selected

Ok, that's what I've been a little confused about. I thought that listening in "pcm multich hdmi" was its own listening mode (like DD HD or DTS HD, just not listed as such on the receiver).

It's like there are subcategories of listening to HD audio when I have various listening modes to choose from. For example, if I had a blu ray player that didn't do the decoding on it's own, I could select the HD audio listening mode. I want the listening mode that gives me highest quality HD sound.

Not sure if this makes much sense, but I'm a little slow when it comes to this stuff.

Thanks,
MarcellusT

Don't know about the other stuff but to get the Onkyo 'on-screen' display back on your screen, unplug the power cords to both the reciever and the display for at least 20 seconds then replug back in... that's it! It seems if you disconnect the HDMI cable from the display and reconnect while the units are still plugged in (even though they are turned OFF) the Onkyo will no longer send the set-up menu to your display... just a little quirk I discovered some time ago dating back to earlier Onkyo's going back at least 2 model generations (604 to 606)... it drove me nutz for the longest time until I finally figured it out.

Please forgive me if I am being naive.

How do I make sure I'm listening to the optimal mode. I can rotate through the different modes by pressing Movie, but none of these say DTS-HD, etc. All devices (cept for the Wii) are connected via HDMI. I assumed that the receiver would automatically chance to whatever signal is being sent but I think I'm wrong. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Are you using a PS3? I ask because you won't see DTS HD or any other type of HD listening mode displayed on the 606 (the PS3 does the decoding itself).

If yes, then you have a similar question to mine. If I'm playing a disk with HD audio and I'm getting "pcm multich hdmi" on the display, then I know I'm getting HD audio. However, there are still various listening modes to choose from on the 606 itself.

To get the best sound from an HD audio source, I'm wondering which one to select. For the time being, I'll keep it on multich., as someone above suggested.

I recently picked up this receiver, and generally, I'm impressed.

I'm having a problem with component video, however.

Quick summary:

PS3 via HDMI
DVD player via component
ReplayTV 5040 via component
VCR via s-Video

Outputs to TV are HDMI and Component.

PS3 looks fine, as does the VCR, over HDMI. The DVD player and ReplayTV both have "rainbow" effect when viewed over HDMI (to TV), but NOT when viewed over component (to TV).

It's only a mild annoyance to have the extra cable to the TV, but I've gathered from other posts that this shouldn't be happening? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance....

what type of tv is it? Im thinking that maybe the interference is coming from you using both HDMI and component. Ive seen something like that happen and problem was resolved by removing one. I would just direct connect the units you are running component to the TV if you have enough inputs and just run your audio through the 606.

Can someone answer the following:

If I crossover my fronts to 40Hz and have the LFE set to 120Hz, are there any scenarios with the Onkyo 606 where I loose all the sound between 40Hz and 120Hz?

Or does it cross over correctly?

Has anyone measuered it ?

Cheers

So has anyone had issues with the front panel LCD?

I got my Reciever last Thursday. Fired it up and calibrated. All is good. Watch a movie and goto bed.

Next day I turn it on and it does some click on click off junk and I have no front panel LCD. Since then I've been testing all the receiever functions and everything seems fine except my LCD panel.

1 day and the LCD panel dies.

And no i'm not in Direct/Pure mode. No matter what source it is dead. It actually came on the other day then went away again.

Very weird.

LPF of LFE only affects the LFE channel. The front crossover obviously only affects the front speakers. They're completely independent of each other. So no, you won't lose any sound because of interaction between these two settings.

do any of you 606 owners use the preset Listening Modes that can be selected on the remote or on the receiver itself?
