You PS3 is doing all the decoding for you. Don't worry - if the receiver says it is receiving Multi-channel PCM via HDMI, then the PS3 is providing that M-ch PCM by decoding the audio formats.

There is a setting in the PS3 to have it output DD and DTS as raw bitstream, but you won't hear anything different. The PS3 also decodes TrueHD and DTS-HD MA for you from BDs, and still the 606 will not light up anything other than M-ch PCM. You need an advanced audio bitstreaming BD player to get the raw advanced audio codecs to the receiver via HDMI.

Your receiver is working fine. It's your ps3 that doesn't work the way you think it does. Press the Display button to see what kind of signal you're receiving. It's not DD or DTS. The only game I have that plays in DD or DTS is Drake's Fortune.

so does this mean the amp wont pick the dolby true hd properly? or the ps3 is just actually crap lol

Your 606 is working fine and actually so is the PS3 for its capabilities. If your receiver decodes the audio signal, then your "nifty" lights will come on. When your player decodes and sends a PCM signal, the the receiver will show PCM Multichannel.

this is some clever s$^t lol ok thankls people.. instaed of having ps3 autimatical find everything, i selected it only to find DD, DTS n all that, dont have 7 speakers so 5.1 with lights will do!!

oh heres another question!!

my speakers for the center and rear are sony ss-490's the rear can handle 120 and center 150 watts maximum input..
as the amp is 140w output will it blow my speakers?

I just got a 606 to go with my new panny 50PZ85U and everything is working fine except I'm not getting a picture, only sound from my Direct DVR.

I connected the DVR using S-video and audio cables to ( CBL/SAT in ) on the 606 as per the manual. I have HDMI out to the TV. What did I miss?

you change your settings to

Left = 1ft.
Center = 2ft.
Right = 1ft.
Sub = 1ft
I think that would be the lowest relative setting?

Changing settings like that makes no difference to the delays. It is the relative distances that matter. In both cases above, the center will be set to the minimum delay, and the others will have an additional 0.89 mS of delay.

Curious on the whole matrixing of bitstreams.. if you dont matrix a bitstream of truehd to 7.1, do the rear speakers basically not output any sound.. or is it just the side speakers spread across the back?

Has anyone tried comparing matrix to not matrixed to see if the full 7.1 sounds that much better?

Why would you use an Svid cable for the video? Doesn't your DVR have an HDMI out? Sounds like you need to play around with the assignments on the receiver (hit the setup button on your remote and have at it).

Would like to test my 5.1 surround setup on 606. Can you recommend best movie to test the system?

The DVR doesn't have HDMI. I believe with the hookup I described above the receiver should recognize it by the default setting and shouldn't need to be assigned but it's not working.

If I understand him correctly, Rumeck was referring to how sound bounces off of things. As these objects, materials, walls get hotter they become more dense and when they become more dense the sound doesn't reflect as much as becomes flat. Environments that are humid often have a drop in sound and ambience. He frequents at another audio forum and they get pretty deep talking about it.

If the soundtrack is 5.1, your SB speakers will be silent. If it's 7.1, then you'll get whatever was recorded in the SB channels.

What about component outs on the DVR? I'm just asking because S-video PQ is pretty bad. If it's not working, even though you think the inputs are assigned correctly I'd still go in and check.

Humidity, I believe. Sound absorption changes significantly with humidity - but not temperature. Well, if you got down to the dew point, maybe, but that's not usual indoor temperature. I would be very surprised if wall and object density change enough to change the reflection coefficients significantly over the range of temperature in the typical home, say 60F to 85F.

Thats what i figured...

Have you ever tried 7.1 matrixed .. any big difference?

The DirectTV SD DVR only has S-Video and composite and I did go in and check and it looked to be right

I think this may have been mentioned previously, maybe in a different thread, but.. the xbox 360 outputs 1080p over component, since the update last year.. if using component to hdmi conversion, will this work..? I'm guessing it wont, just like the yamaha 663? So the only way around this is to use component out from the receiver to the tv (which i'm assuming it should have of course)..

No, it won't convert this to HDMI. If you download the manual from Onkyo's site, it has a chart in the back showing what signals will convert and what won't.

I don't know. You may want to take it up with him. I just wanted to know if my bi-amp configuration is correct. LOL.

I have a 606 and I know in the manual it tells you how to bi-amp and on the back of the receiver it is clearly labelled. Go check out your manual. Also make sure to to turn it on in the set-up menu.
post #924 of 9415
I read the manual. I'm hesitant in fear that I'll break something so I wanted to verify if my configuration was correct.

in the setup, make sure that CBL/SAT channel isn't assigned to anything. keep it "-----" in 1-1.HDMI input and 1-2.Component video input

Is it normal for receivers to be hot to the touch after use? My 606 runs very hot and I believe I had video & audio cutting out because of overheating. I setup a fan next to it to keep some airflow going but I'd much rather not have a fan running all the time. It's really obnoxious during quiet scenes of movies/tv.
Anyone else experience the same issue?

Some people have mentioned that Onkyos get anywhere from warm to hot. If you're looking at the face the heat is coming from the upper-right corner, towards the back end of the receiver. Make sure that it has proper ventilation for the heat to disperse.

You could try using fans with thermo sensors. You can just place them using a two-way tape in the areas where there's a lot of heat. They're quiet and will only turn on when heat rises to a certain temperature.
