Bedroom Ceiling Speaker Recommendations

My fellow home theater enthusiast has been trying to talk me into doing something about the state of my bedroom theater at some point. Here's what I currently have set up.

Mitsubishi 46" CRT Rear-Pro
Yamaha RX-V1600 Receiver
Panasonic RP-61K DVD Player
DirecTV HR-20
5.1 Yamaha speaker system circa 1998

What began as a quest to replace my 480P/1080I behemoth TV with a Panasonic plasma has gotten... more complex. In an effort to make the room more elegant we've decided to wall mount the TV and move all the components into the bedrooms walk in closet.

Now, I could just mount the Yamaha speakers on the wall. Or I could go with some in ceiling mounted speakers. I like the idea of in ceiling speakers as it's less obtrusive and will be easy to wire as the bedrooms ceiling is the attic. While I know some about the IQ series (as I have a 7.1 IQ system) I know nothing about the Ci series.

What do you recommend in a 5/5.1 system? Keep in mind this is a bedroom not my main theater so massive sound quality isn't nessicary something on par with or slightly better than my Yamaha's would be fine.

I just ordered some BIC in-walls. I probably would have never considered them, but I bought some BIC speakers years ago and they give surprisingly good sound for their price point. I still use those for surounds, and they sound very good with my Boston T930s and VR10 center. What reviews I could find for the in-walls were all positive, and they are very reasonably priced, so I ordered two sets. They should arrive this week. If you want to wait for me to test them, I'll certainly let you know what I think about them.

I'd be glad to wait. I was considering KEF's but they tend to be price prohibitive and I love the Boston sound.

I'm wondering if I will need a subwoofer in this setup? It would be nice not to have a box sitting in my room and I can't cut into the walls to install an in-wall subwoofer.

You could put bass shakers on the bed...

I'll let you know how the in-walls sound when I get them. I'll listen to them with no enclosure before I start cutting my drywall. I am primarily concerned with the highs and mids since these will be surrounds/rear surrounds, so that should tell me a lot.

Skipp,

The BIC's came yesterday and have acquired the txjeep seal of approval. I hooked them up to the "A" speaker wires from my Marantz SR8002 and popped in a James Taylor CD (this is the CD I use to test equipment). The mids and highs are quite good, which is my primary concern as surround/back surround speakers. The soft dome tweeters sound very similar to the soft domes on my Boston mains. Mids are similar as well. Even with no enclosure, they were able to produce some lows. I think they will do a lot better in my double sheetrock walls with green glue. I am very picky about speakers and I am pleased with this purchase. For the money I can't believe these are not more popular on this forum. Maybe they are not expensive enough to get people's attention..?

Maybe your right. I gave a set of Speaker Craft Aim 2's and Aim 3's a listen to the other day. We used the David Gilmour "Remeber that Night" BluRay as our test source. They sounded pretty decent when paired with a Mirage 8" sub.

I'd really like to avoid a sub if I can but I'm thinking that's likely going to be impossible if I want anything below say about 180hz.

Good luck. By the way, if you end up buying a sub, Mirage makes a great one. I have their Omni S12 and it is outstanding.

Ok, I'm narrowing it down with my installer. Here's what we're thinking.

Three Ci200.2QT's, one front left, front right, and center channel.
Two Ci160.2QS's for my rears.

And some tiny 8" sub mounted under the bed. The front's will be wired in Music Mode so they come down when they receive an audio signal from my Yamaha RX-V1600. I'm hoping the downward angle of the motorized drivers will help imaging on the bed. Maybe I'll get another Mirage 8". I love the one in my living room.
