Criterion Goes Blu!!!

Just got this e-mail from Criterion:

Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,

We've got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.

Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We've picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we'll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.

Here's what's in the pipeline:

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we'll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg's outback masterpiece at the same time.

Holy you know what! A buddy of mine is a diehard Criterion collector who's going to go ape you know what when I tell him this news.

There's likely to be a few I'll want as well.

I shall now commence my nagging for Robinson Crusoe on Mars...

Robinson Crusoe on Mars, please.

GREAT news!

very cool~
Night On Earth, please!

What no love for Armageddon? I kid, I kid.

I'd love The Silence Of The Lambs and The 39 Steps for starters.

Good news! Looking forward to Chunking Express

Am I reading this right in that they're charging $40 for a title? That's really not bad at all. I'd be willing to pay that much for a Criterion, whereas for any other company I'd not fork over the cash.

Dammit... that means it'll be $60 now for a Blu-ray edition...

Seriously though... anyone heard any concrete pricing info? I finally upgraded to Blu-ray today (after getting a PS3) so this is good news. Good news other than the fact I bought The Third Man a few months ago for 30+ dollars.

Nothing that interests me, but good news nonetheless.

Also, mhanlen1, read the whole first post. It answers your question.

This is truly the moment all fans of the film on the home theater have been waiting for the last 2 years.

This is great news. I have been hoping that would go Blu!

You won't get TSOTL from Criterion. MGM/Fox owns that now and they produce their own special editions. The Criterion disc went OOP around the time the 2001 SE DVD came out.

I'm really wanting Brazil, hopefully at a lower price since it won't need 3 discs.

great news. hopefully third man will be of reference quality.

This is incredible news--my jaw hit the floor when I got the e-mail this afternoon. There are so many of their titles that I want to see released in high def!

Will they have the rights to release all that are currently in print as standard def titles, or will they need to renegotiate on a case by case basis for Blu-ray?

Kurosawa!!

Brazil!!

Rushmore!!

Fantastic news!!!
how dare they release 13 titles in one month. f*#@ers! I can't afford that!

As much as I want to buy every disc they release, I think I'll stick to the Kurosawa flicks and a few others here and there.

Please don't use the blue cases... please don't use the blue cases...

As much as I've complained about them...I'm to the point of thinking this is the best. It gives consistency. Plus if you have red cases mixed in, you won't get confused if a BD is in a red case. What is strange though, is that the Matrix HD DVD box set had the bonus disc in a BLACK Viva Elite case, without any format logo. So these do exist.. I wish I could purchase these and put standard DVDs in them!

Going to be hard to resist! This is bigger to me than Paramount!

paramount and criterion will be releasing discs and funai will be putting under $300 bd players into some stores.

things appear to be happening in bd land!

if they can just keep the quality standards up where they belong...

As far as quality goes, we can count on Fox to let us down.
