I have the Japanese Toho BR of Godzilla and it is not "DNR'd to death." It's *lighter* and features less contrast than the US Criterion BR, something most Japanese B/W video transfers feature. It's also an older transfer done originally for Japanese HD broadcast on outdated equipment. In many spots, there's more detail to be found in the darker, murkier scenes on the older Japanese BR.
The Criterion BR (which is also from a different print btw) features higher contrast resulting in deeper blacks but the trade-off is a somewhat harsher looking transfer with some detail lost in the really dark scenes. If anything, it could be argued the Criterion BR has some edge enhancement but it really appears that effect is from the higher contrast of the transfer and the fact it's a different print than the Japanese BR.
