Paramount to Re-Issue Entire Blu-ray Back Catalog

Only days after Paramount announced it would be re-issuing a select number of discontinued Blu-ray catalog titles this Spring, the studio has confirmed it is returning its entire Blu-ray back catalog to store shelves by the end of May.

As we first reported last week, Paramount announced plans to re-issue eight previously-discontinued catalog titles on the format on May 20. Now there's even more good news for fans who have been unable to find past Paramount Blu-ray titles at retailer locations, as the studio will re-issue their entire Blu-ray back catalog.

Word from Paramount is that the titles are identical to the original releases (even the catalog IDs and SKUs remain consistent), so expect the same tech specs, supplement details, and packaging.

The complete list of newly-reactivated titles includes: 'Black Rain,' 'Coming to America,' 'Disturbia,' 'Failure to Launch,' 'Flags of Our Fathers,' 'Four Brothers,' 'Freedom Writers,' 'Hustle & Flow,' 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,' 'The Italian Job (2003),' 'Letters from Iwo Jima,' 'The Manchurian Candidate (2004),' 'Mission: Impossible,' 'M-i-2,' 'M:i:III,' 'Mission: Impossible - Ultimate Missions Collection,' 'Nacho Libre,' 'Norbit,' 'Payback: Straight Up - The Director's Cut,' 'Reds,' 'Shooter,' 'Trading Places,' 'We Were Soldiers,' 'World Trade Center' and 'U2 Rattle & Hum.'

These nearly three-dozen titles join the previous eight announced by Paramount last week: 'Aeon Flux,' 'Babel,' 'Black Snake Moan,' 'Dreamgirls,' 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,' 'Sleepy Hollow,' 'The Untouchables' and 'The Warriors.'

Paramount has not yet confirmed suggested list prices for the Blu-ray re-issues, but we'll keep you posted.

I'm down for Payback: Straight Up.

That's the one title I wasn't able to get from Paramount before they went HD-DVD exclusive.

And Sleepy Hollow.

You'll probably laugh at me, but has anyone heard about Sahara? They said they are re-releasing their entire back catalog yet I haven't hear about Sahara. That's a movie I wouldn't mind owning for around 10$.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is something of a guilty pleasure for me. I used to have the HD-DVD version and will probably pick up the BluRay edition as well.

I'd love to get Hunt for Red October on BluRay but I somehow doubt Paramount will be releasing it by itself anytime soon (the remaining Jack Ryan movies really didn't do it for me).

Sahara is a great movie, and the transfer (on HD DVD) is very nice indeed.

The only film they released that was worth the case it came in was The Untouchables. Everything else can stay in the vault.

Also, can we have one thread where the nerds don't ask for star trek or star wars? Thanks.

Paramount should first re-encode these titles which sold like hot cakes in eBay

1) Shooter
2) Sahara

Don't bother, Payback: Straight Up was horrid. If both versions of the movie had been on there, that would have been one thing, but the "director's cut" was just terrible. There's a reason why he was essentially removed from the production and Gibson took over.

What is wrong with Star Trek? I have the HD DVD version and it is great! I can't wait for the other seasons to appear on Blu Ray. They will be expensive, but worth it. Besdies, it is probably Paramounts greatest franchise with 10 (eleven soon) feature films and five tv series.

And release a new edition for Aeon Flux, the first one sucks, BD25, MPEG2, looks soft and grainy at times (I've been told it was sourced from the original digital master, but I doubt it) and no Hi-Rez audio.

Putting aside the quibbling about individual transfers, this is very good news and it will have a material impact on the number of titles that will be available, particularly in advance of the release of new players by Panasonic, Sony, and others, and, of course, the holidays.

And Untouchables is an excellent movie, in my view. Good to have that one back.

The only issue with some of these older re-releases is their HD-DVD counterpart does indeed look a tad better. I own several of these in both formats and the HD-DVD looks a little better....

Not a huge difference but it's there. Just a tad washed out on some of these.

FWIW, I loved the director's cut but thought the theatrical version was just okay.

Well, lets hope that on all the titles that had VC-1 on HD-DVD they will now put the VC-1 codec on the Blu-ray.

Although I have no idea why Paramount would do different codecs in the first place. Especially in the case of shooter. Mpeg 2 on the Blu-ray and AVC on the Hd-DVD? Makes no sense...

They weren't doing their own encoding. Two different companies were handling each release.
