HD-A3 not upscaling problem

I just "Acquired" a Toshiba HD-A3 HD-DVD player. I put a standard DVD in the tray, and when it loads, I get the following warning message:
--------------------------------------------------
| Hi resolution output is prohibited for this content |
| resolution was changed to 480p |
-------------------------------------------------
Any clue why I can't upscale a standard disc to 1080i?
It still plays the disc OK.
Is the unit flawed? My 1st HD-DVD's should be arriving soon.
Is HDMI required for upscaling? cable just ordered.
How does the player know I don't currently have an HDMI hookup?

You can only upscale if using the HDMI connection.

Well I got the HDMI cable in the mail Tuesday & all I can say is WOW!
I no longer get the warning above when playing standard DVD's. The PQ on HD DVD's is amazing! I have 6 discs so far, 2 more coming in. Is it possible that the PQ & SQ are better than my Verion FIOS HD-DVR output? I get none of the ocassional pixelization that occurs with cable. The surround info seems to be better too. I am hearing more from the surround channels than ever before. I think that the A3 could very well be the best $60 investment I ever made!
As for Upscaling- has anyone actually compared the PQ of a standard DVD on an HD player to that of a standard player with component cables? I think the PQ on the A3 is better than on my old DVD player, but I will need to borrow a friends DVD that I have to do a side by side comparison with both players playing in synch. Thanks!

Cable and other sources are compressed. HD-DVD and Blu-ray are the best PQ you will get.

You are also getting lossless sound with the A3. Much better than with other sources.

HD-DVD and BD are demonstrably and consistently superior to any cable or satellite provider. Higher resolution video with much less compression; HD audio with no compression (or at worst higher bitrates); none of the dynamic artifacting from weather, load rebalancing, and other variables that degrade cable/sat signals. In reality, a strong OTA HD broadcast signal will usually produce better quality than cable.

I doubt that anyone would dispute that even the most modest HD-DVD player does better upconversion than most TVs.

i occasionally get that message on my HD-A30 when i insert standard DVD discs, which is weird because i only have HDMI connected. i figure that it is a handshake issue, because retrying the same discs a second time usually results in no message and upscaling to 1080p just fine.

If you used burned "copy" dvds it upscales to 1080i in component output as well.
Well at least my A2 does.

I'm not telling you to pirate movies, merely make copies of your own movies without the encryption and everything gets converted.
