Has your viewing patterns changed because of HD?

One of the things I have found myself doing is watching more sports, nature, and documentary type stuff BECAUSE it is in HD. I'm still hooked on the visual difference between HD and analog.

Has anyone else found themselves doing the same?

Same here. In fact, if it is not true full screen HD, I don't want to watch it.

I do have to suffer through a program or two in SD because my wife won't give them up.

Yes. As a matter of fact, the only non HD channels that I have left in my favorites guide is Comedy Central and MSNBC.....

i did for the 3 yrs i had c'cast hd service. i watched hd movies and concerts, mostly on hdnet/movies. not a sports fan, unfortunately.

then along came hd dvd and bd.

crapcast took away hdnet/movies and jacked up the price by $90 so i dumped c'cast hd service and am sticking with hd optical media for movies and concerts.
were i a sports fan i would have kept hd service but im not so

'EFF'em!

ps-a few college/pro football games that i did watch on espnhd on my 108"screen were a sight to behold!!

and lest i forget; hd, sd, quality, schmuality, CONTENT RULES!!!

When I first got HD back in 2003 it definately changed my viewing choice. I had long abandoned "Network" programming in favor of cable networks. But back then the only HD programming was on the Networks with only HDNet and DiscHD the exceptions. So HD did return me to the broadcast networks.

The absolute last show I watch in SD is Scrubs (hopefully ABC produces it in HD next year). If I tune into something and its not in HD the channel gets changed, period. Right now I'm OTA only. I'm planning to move this summer and will probably get DishHD then.

Other than animation, the only SD I watch is Ebert & Roeper (or is it Phillips & Roeper?)
I doubt that I would watch half the stuff I watch if they weren't in HD. For example, I will watch an HD golf broadcast, but not an SD golf broadcast. I am less apt to watch a baseball game in SD than in HD.

I rarely watch anything in SD. The one channel I'll probably watch more of in SD is Speed Channel and that's because Comcast hasn't added it in HD in my area. If I see something on HGTV HD or A&E HD and it's stretchovision, then I'll turn it to the SD channel. Those things give me a headache.

Mostly the same here. Scrubs is also one of the last SD shows I watch. For reality I still watch Big Brother, hoping they will put that in HD soon too. I don't enjoy watching sd, the lower res, and black bars on the side. Except for watching old dvds of shows, I try not to act like there was a world without HD.

I rarely watch any SD anymore, so yes, it has affected my viewing patterns..
The only show I watch in SD these days is PTI and one of our local news channels otherwise I don't watch.

not really as i still watch alot of:

1. comedy channel....not HD yet obviously.
2. non-HD show reruns (x-files, cheers etc.)
3. nfln...studio shows, older game replays etc. not in HD yet.

How do you stand it Picture quality is 90% of the enjoyment.

Not really. I've had it long enough that it's lost it's luster. The first few times I watched HD I was impressed. After that I've come to expect HD as that's the way things should be - not something special. A good show is still good in SD or HD. Of course, if I have a choice I watch it in HD but as far as changing viewing habits - no. I've long since passed the point of watching something I don't particularly care for just because it's in HD. Picture quality is definitely NOT 90% of the enjoyment.

i would rather watch a non-hd show i like rather than an hd show that i dont like....plus a non hd show on an hd channel looks basically ok.

I'd have to say, about 80-85% of what I watch is in HD. Not all of the SD channels look poorly. It's just that some TV experts warned me that too much 4x3 viewing with sidebars can harm my HDTV. For me, if it's not prime time shows like American Idol or Lost, it's sporting events, historical/nature documentaries, live performances, or various shows at appear on Food Network in HD.

Since getting HDTV back in 2002 or so, I have watched more documentaries and travel shows than I eve did before. I'll gladly watch a travel show now, so long as it's in HD.

As others have mentioned above, I also switched over completely to the OTA networks. I don't need umpteen repeats of L&O and the others, so long as I have an HD Tivo and an antenna!

I hit the SoV (stretch-o-vision) on my TV, expanding the 4:3 to 16:9, so it doesn't burn out, although some local stations with SoV the have the native image with black sidebars, so you can't expand the image, unless your TV has zoom, but now you loose a % of top and bottom image in order to compensate.. and of course zooming means also seeing the pixels up close, so less PQ.

If the show is really good I sacrifce some burn in in my TV, the sidebars sometimes are unavoidable as many commercials are still in SD 4:3.

None of my viewing decisions are based on HD vs. SD. In the case of a drama or comedy, I'm far more focused on the performances and writing than I am in pixel resolution. Therefore, I still watch a lot of SD only programming. I don't watch sports and I watch very little non-fiction programming, so HD doesn't factor in there, either.
I won’t voluntarily watch a drama or comedy show that’s not in HD anymore. If that’s obsessive, then I’m guilty. I do, however, sometimes watch talk shows that are SD.

I watched the entire 3rd season of Battlestar Galactica in standard-def (that's how good it is). Unfortunately, SciFi is the only channel I'd care to pay for, so it's OTA only (plus hi-def optical). I occasionally stream BSG episodes online to stay current, but pretty much everything else I watch is in HD.
Before I went HD last year, I rarely watched PBS. Now I watch more PBS than anything else. PBS is the only 24 hour HD channel I get.

u cant "burn" an lcd....only a plasma right ?
I watched almost no network television before HDTV. I had never heard of Law and Order or CSI. I got HDTV to watch sports mostly. This made cable shows in SD pretty hard to watch so I checked out some network shows for the first time. It was still 80% garbage like I remembered but 20% was pretty good and it was in HD.

In theory you can "burn" any TV. Some are just more susceptible than others.
The pixels/materials "age" unevenly.

Plasma is easily the most. But if you watch a variety of programming and don't leave side black bars ALL the time, you are fine.

I have a plasma for it's better PQ.

Yes. My viewing habits HAVE changed.

I tend to stick in the HD channel range. I even watch CNN HD (on and off) because of the better PQ than Fox.

Some HD channels are better than others, too.

Some of the Hockey HD was spectacular. NBC Universal Hockey HD had incredible sound!!!
I'm not a sports nut though. I refuse to spend a dime on sports.

No, DLP, LCD, SXRD, and a few others can not burn in. Plasma and CRT can.
I'll watch SD without complaint. But, if I have to split the difference between two shows I like, if only one is in HD it will win every time.

I also will watch a show I don't care for or even know for a few minutes just to take in how each production deals with HD.

But, I've been burned often enough by crappy shows pitched in HD that I don't think it is a deal maker. Look at that Cousteau special from PBS-HD. Instead of a great underwater fish adventure, they annoyed us with frickin rain forest destruction when I tuned it in. No amount of HD can apologize for that.

My viewing habits haven't changed much. Although, in an ideal situation, I'd like to have 2 televisions side-by-side for the transition, one analog and one HD. Too bad I don't have the space. HD tvs enhance the problems of 480I. It is still perfectly acceptable to me on an analog set. Since getting a converter, I do watch the analog set more often.

This is a quick 5 minutesearch.

Burn-in, image retention, section fatigue, uneven aging. Permanent or not.
I admit only LCD.
