I called Pioneer US again today. The first line tech support people who man the phones, including their supervisor, have interpreted the info in the manual as saying that the only way to get 200 watts/channel is in stereo only, and that if you use any surround configuration at all, power drops to 140 watts per channel. If you accept this, then you get either 400 watts or 1400!! They came to this "interpretation", ignoring all the bi-amp options, solely based on the manual's reference to stereo power being 200 X 2 (8ohms)
When I pointed out to the guy that Pioneer's own press announcements, spec sheet and marketing bulletins from Japan ALL state 7 X 200 as well as 10 X 140, he seemed genuinely surprised to learn this. He put me on hold to confirm what I told him is true and said they've been telling other callers what they told me which completely goes against Pioneer's own published materials. So Pioneer's own customer support staff are as confused as we are.
He put in a case number for the question which will be referred to US engineering support & possibly the Japan office. They have a unit to work with so he indicated he would put in a request for engr to test the output themselves. If they actually do that & called me with their results, I would be very impressed.
I am **supposed** to get a return call on this; if I don't hear back in 1 week, I'll call them again for a status update. We'll see...
I pointed out our presence here on AVSForum & how potential buyers are seeking information from the few SC-09 owners and trying to make sense of Pioneer's power ratings. And how this could impact their sales...maybe that will help
He also said they've received the most calls & complaints about the inability to adjust & scale HDMI video inputs. The 80's series could do it, but Pioneer dropped it on the 90 series and these new SC's, preferring to leave the video in its pure, unaltered state.
Nice guy to talk to & I believe was genuinely concerned about getting the facts right.
Alan, if you find out anything from Pio Norway, please share..
Unbelievable for a mega consumer electronics company to have provided so little factual details to their own support people on a $7000 piece!!
