Still can't play GTA4? It's your PS3, Says Rockstar

123 Being the owner of a 60 GB PS3 that just happens to not play GTA4 has made for a stressful week and a half. I am a sufferer of the dreaded instant freeze, meaning I haven't been able to play more than 20 seconds of GTA4 and have tried every fix there is, including the patch. Calling Rockstar, Take-Two, and Sony (and not getting any concrete answers), and watching everyone on my friends list play GTA4 while I play another game of Warhawk has been trying. Now Rockstar has finally sent me a reply that addresses the 60 GB PS3 issue:

"Thank you for your patience while we continue to work to resolve this hardware-related issue. We have provided your information to Sony, and they will be contacting you directly to assist in the repair and/or replacement of your PLAYSTATION 3 console.

Once again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Please provide us with your mailing address and shirt size at your earliest convenience, as we would like to send you something as a token of our appreciation for your patience with this matter.

Rockstar Games"

Since most of us with this problem are WELL outside of our warranty, exactly how much money will it cost us to play GTA4?

Screw the shirt, I'd rather have a functioning game.

BTW I'm 20 hours in with a launch 60g and never froze.

Seriously though, could it really be a hardware issue? As I have played way over a dozen different games for countless hours with no issues like GTA4 is giving me... what make GTA4 so special?LOL!

Great.

I wonder how many "defective" consoles are out there? I haven't had a single problem until GTA. Maybe they can't find the cause and assume it is on our side.

Maybe Rockstar has found there is an issue with certain PS3s but can't divulge or else it would sour their relationship with Sony? Why else haven't we got a straight answer?

It happened with the PS2. When Sony made certain revision changes from the launch PS2 a few games failed to play correctly on the new models. At the time I seem to remember Taito being the most publicly peeved about it.

Looks like we may have a reverse situation here. Though it doesn't sound like a revision fault to me.

I called Sony this morning. I spoke to the initial CSR and then was transferred to one that deals with GTA4 issues. This second guy acknowledged that they originally thought that it was a hardware issue, but now they don't think that is the case.....go figure. He said that both Sony and Rockstar are working on it.

He also read his little script that they are receiving extremely few calls on the issue. If the patch did not help your issues, then give Sony a call and tell them. They will record your serial number and build date. Since I had already done Rockstar's 12 step program, or those that I can do before the game repeatedly froze up, he didn't have any other suggestions.

He told me to keep an eye on their web site and Rockstar's and that they would e-mail me with info.

What ever happened to that guy who supposedly works for Rockstar that described what the problem was a couple days after launch (like that Thursday) and that a patch was in the works. Then, the patch is released and it did not address the problem he described, rather something else. Has he been debunked or something?

Safari does grammar checking, at least on the Mac. It's built right in to the OS.

Never had a problem on my 40gb!

Man, I've emailed Rockstar 4 times now, and have only received 1 response: the dreaded 12-step BS form email.

I'm going to call Sony tomorrow, since GTA4 is still unplayable on my 60gig. Looks like i may need to send it in... what a bunch of messed up BS!! Every other game plays fine.

Let me know if they want you to send it in. The guy I spoke with certainly didn't say anything about sending it in. Indeed, he denied that it is a hardware problem and specifically said it is the game.

Guys this all sucks, sorry to hear it.

I'm about 10% through the game playing it on my 60GB PS3. It locked up on me once before the update. Otherwise, no problems.
