Placing floor speakers on shelves?

I am planning on building a full-wall, built-in bookcase behind my projector screen. I would like to elevate my existing floor standing L and R speakers by placing them on shelves in the built-ins (say about 1-2' off of the floor). Has anyone done this? It seems like it should work fine and the speakers will be more at ear level which seems good. They are B&W CDM 7NT speakers...

I guess i could build the bookcase and leave space for the speakers to rest on the floor but i would prefer to have them on a shelf for the clean look and to get everything off of the floor. I guess they might look funny elevated off the ground? Maybe hide them behind AT cloth?

I also love these speakers so am reluctant to buy new speakers that would be better suited for bookshelf placement. I guess i could sell the B&Ws and get new bookshelf speakers... Anyone have advice? Its a dedicated 7.1 home theater with ceiling mounted surrounds.

Placing speakers inside of a bookshelf may adversely affect the performance of the speaker. Understandably the real world requires balance between form and function and this seems to be case so try placing them in your book case and see how they perform; if you can deal with any of the potential performance degradations than you have your answer.

i have not yet built the bookcase so i am not sure i can do a test run. Its seems like an all-or-nothing scenario.

There is a air port on the back of the speakers so i imagine they may suffer from being enclosed as opposed to true bookshelf speakers.

Ugh....
